good Samaritan said he hit a shooting suspect with his SUV to save the life of an Atlanta police officer.
Donald Melvin said he turned his SUV into a weapon.
Melvin knocked suspect Atibi Thomas off an off-duty Atlanta police officer who was wounded and on the ground struggling with the suspect, police said.
Melvin said, "He was still trying to shoot police so I sucker punched him right quick."
Melvin said after trying to run over and punch the man, the suspect was still on top of Officer Keith Roach, threatening Roach with a gun.
Roach had already been shot in the arms and stomach.
Melvin said jumping into action came naturally.
Melvin said, "My son is a police officer, and my nephew is a police officer. When I saw that going on it made me think of my son and I just had to do something."
Police arrested Thomas.
Melvin said he visited Roach in the hospital, and Roach thanked him for saving his life.
