TOUTLE, Wash. -- A gnome has mysteriously appeared in front of one of the cameras at the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument in Toutle.

The gnome can be seen on what the monument’s Web site calls the VolcanoCam Classic. To the right of the gnome is a round sign that possibly reads, “I will get the snow,” but it is somewhat illegible.

The camera is located at the Johnston Ridge Observatory at an elevation of approximately 4,500 feet, about five miles from the volcano.

It is not known who is responsible for the gnome’s presence, but park officials said the area is accessible to anyone on skis.Such pranks involving placing gnomes at various landmarks and then photographing them have been documented since the 1980s.
