Car crashes into Gulfport home as mom and baby sleep, only minor injuries
Gulfport, Florida-- Rescue crews say it's a miracle anyone survived after a driver lost consciousness and crashed her car into a bedroom where a mother and her 15-month-old son were sleeping.
"I heard a ka-boom!" said neighbor Shane Trauger who was smoking in his backyard when the car crashed. "They were very, very lucky. It crashed into her bed."
Gulfport Fire Rescue officials say they received a 9-1-1 call from neighbors at 1:59 a.m. Saturday. Emergency crews arrived at the home, which is on the corner of Gulfport Boulevard and Horan Way, to find the mother and toddler, plus the driver of the Honda, all trapped inside the home.
The mother, Sonya Kelso, 34, later told her husband she'd done a barrel roll in front of her son when the car came crashing into their bedroom wall. All she remembers after that is handing the little boy, named Jack, through a broken window.
Jack's only injury was a gash on his foot.
His mother and the driver, Rebecca Ruark, 28, were both taken to Bayfront Medical Center.
Kelso suffered only back pain. Ruark was last listed in fair condition.
Kelso's husband, Kyle Kelso, had been in Mississippi where he works for the U.S. Geological Survey. He was already on his way home when his neighbor called him with the news.
"I was terrified. I had no idea what was going on because my neighbor called me, not my wife," Kelso said. At 2:30 a.m., he left his hotel room in Marianna, Florida and started the 259-mile journey home.
"I drove five hours home without knowing anything, so it was a long ride," Kelso said.
Kelso expects the family will be staying at a hotel for the next couple of days. City officials were expected to visit the home Saturday to determine if it was safe to live in. Until then, no one is allowed inside.
