A British mother was in custody last night on suspicion of murdering her two young children in a popular Spanish resort.

The children, a boy aged one and a girl of five, are believed to have been suffocated or strangled.

It was widely reported in the Spanish media that the mother, who may have some type of mental disorder, had confessed to killing her children.

The bodies were found yesterday afternoon in a hotel room in Lloret de Mar on the Costa Brava.

The mother, who is believed to be aged around 40, approached reception staff at the beachfront Hotel Miramar shortly after 3pm and asked for an ambulance.

Police were called and made the horrific discovery in Room 101 of the four-star hotel.

After being questioned by police, the woman returned to the hotel room to help carry out a reconstruction for investigators.

She was taken away from the Hotel Miramar shortly after 6.30pm.

A spokesman said: 'Around 3.53pm officers received a call from the local police in Lloret de Mar, asking them to go to a hotel where the lifeless bodies of two youngsters had been found.

'When the officers arrived they established that there were two dead minors inside one of the hotel bedrooms.

'Officers from Girona are investigating the death of the two children and arrested the mother of the two minors for her suspected connection with those events.'

'At this early stage we cannot say exactly how the children died. We have forensic officers at the scene and more details will emerge in the coming days.'

The bodies of the children have been transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Girona and will be examined by a pathologist today.

The mother, who has not yet been charged with any offence, is expected to appear before a judge today or tomorrow.

The woman checked into the £53-a-night hotel with the children on Saturday.

She was not part of a package deal with a tour operator and had made the reservation by phone before paying in advance for four nights' accommodation.

The family had been expected to check out of the hotel today.

Sources within the Hotel Miramar said the woman arrived by car with the children.

It was unclear whether they were already living in Spain or holidaying on the Costa Brava. It was also not known whether the woman checked into the hotel alone or had been joined by a husband or partner.

A hotel spokesman refused to discuss the tragedy.

The partner of the British mother accused of killing her two small children in Spain was arrested last week on charges of child rape, it was revealed today.

Martin Anthony Smith was seized in Barcelona on Friday after fleeing Britain with his wife and five-year-old daughter, Rebecca.

One of Britain's most wanted, he had been on the run for nearly two years.

The 45-year-old, from North Shields, had been wanted in connection with a rape of a child under 16, gross indecency with a girl under 16, indecent assault of a girl under 16, and attempted rape of a girl under 16. The alleged attacks took place between April 30, 1995 and April 29, 2005.

He was extradited back to the UK and appeared in Carlisle Magistrates' Court this morning to face 13 sexual offence charges.

Today his wife, who name is reported as being Angela Lee Smith or Lianne Smith, is being held in Spain after allegedly leaving a note confessing that she had killed her children.

They were named today as Rebecca and Daniel Smith. Rebecca was five years old, while Daniel was just 11 months.

Smith is believed to be the father of Rebecca. It is not yet clear if he is father or step-father to Daniel.

He was told last night by Cumbrian police that the children had been killed in 'the tragic events in Spain'.

The mother allegedly left a note explaining why she had killed the children. Reports this morning claimed she feared the children would be taken from her by authorities.

Police have not yet confirmed claims that Rebecca and Daniel were suffocated with a plastic bag.

Sources said police were searching rubbish bins near the hotel for sleeping pills or tablets that may have been used to overdose the youngsters, although suffocation has not yet been ruled out.

Sky News crime correspondent Martin Brunt said Smith's extradition may have sparked the sequence of events leading to the children's deaths.

Brunt said: "His removal back to the UK may have triggered this terrible tragedy.

"A source in Spain has told me that Lianne Smith said to police she was very concerned that the Spanish authorities would take the children off her."

Initial reports had suggested there were no obvious signs of violence at the scene.

Brunt added: "It looks as though a plastic bag was used to kill them - that is the latest information from Spanish sources."

Shortly before the alarm was raised, a sign had been put on the door of Ms Smith's hotel room which said: "Do not disturb, my kids are ill."

The father, 45 and from North Shields, was described by Cumbria Police as being "distraught" when told of his children's death.

"It is an extraordinary twist to a very tragic story," said Brunt.

Rebecca had been reported missing on website Help Find My Child - which posts details of abducted or missing children.

In an entry dated December 7, 2007, the girl was said to be missing from Lichfield in Staffordshire.

The website says: "Police are concerned for Rebecca who has not been seen since she left the UK with her mother and father Martin Smith."

According to Spanish police, another British man is still being sought in relation to the deaths.

Speaking outside the hotel, Sky News' Ursula Errington said: "We understand from Spanish media, quoting police sources, that they are looking for a British male who was not resident at the hotel."

A mother suspected of killing her two young children in Spain gave a chilling warning days before their deaths.

Lianne Smith, 43, sobbed: 'I really don't know how I'll cope.'

She was frantic with fear that five-year-old Rebecca and 11-month-old Daniel would be taken into care after her partner Martin Smith was arrested over paedophile allegations.

In a dramatic appeal for help, she said: 'Martin's gone now and I've been left looking after both of the children.

'I really don't know how I'll cope... I'm not sure what my plans are now. I'm trying to get my head together and work out what to do.'

Mrs Smith is a former head of a Cumbria County Council department set up to protect children, and ran a nursery for youngsters aged three to six in Barcelona. (omfg, she was looking after little kids, when her husband was wanted for child sex crimes!)

She issued her plea in an interview with a publicist whom she contacted after Smith was dramatically held by Spanish police on May 8.

She firmly believes he is innocent - but was left in despair after he was extradited to the UK.

He was seized by Spanish police using a European arrest warrant on May 8 and faced magistrates in Carlisle, accused of 13 offences allegedly committed between 1995 and 2005.

The court heard that his alleged victim claims she was regularly assaulted from an early age.

Smith, originally from North Shields, Tyneside, was remanded in custody and is due before Carlisle Crown Court on June 7. He denies the charges.

Between 2005 and 2007, Lianne Smith was head of the Extended Schools Department, part of the children's services department of Cumbria County Council, set up to safeguard children aged between three and 14.

She was responsible for services in schools and children's centres, and spearheaded the flagship 'Every Child Matters' programme.

The 43-year-old killed Rebecca, five, and 11-month-old Daniel on Monday night at a Spanish hotel - then raised the alarm at 2pm on Tuesday, according to reports.

Yesterday the Brit was remanded to prison after a judge ruled she was SANE and aware of her actions.

Court documents revealed she had made THREE confessions to murdering her children.

He revealed Lianne had been asked if she wanted to be present while the kids' bodies were removed from the hotel - but declined "because she had already said goodbye to her children".

The judge added he was remanding her in custody because there was a risk she would vanish if granted bail.

Martin, originally from North Shields, and Lianne, from Wallsend, North Tyneside, are not married but share the same surname.
The pair ran an unlicensed B&B from their three-bed Barcelona flat.

The haunting photograph, apparently taken by Mrs Smith's five-year-old daughter Rebecca, was included in a package which was posted from Spain to England.

It arrived only yesterday and is revealed exclusively in the Daily Mail. The fugitive mother compiled an album of their 'wonderful holiday' together on the Costa Brava, then sent it off with a farewell letter before allegedly smothering Rebecca and 11-month-old Daniel with a plastic bag almost two weeks ago.



The package leaves little doubt that the tormented teacher mapped out every last detail of her actions, and was fully in control until the end.
Crucially, a line in her letter pinpoints the exact moment - and the reason - she decided to put her plan into action.

She reveals that 'an attempt was made to take my children' - so she intended to give them 'a short and wonderful holiday before events you will start to hear about in the press'.


'Social Services in Staffordshire and their policy of "forced adoptions" are to blame for this,' she writes. Foretelling her own death, she adds: 'If we were only dealing with the police and court system I would still be here for Martin.'

You know, all along I have wondered why she fled. If he was in custody, and she had no record, or was a suspect in his crime, why did she run? And, the awful thought struck me; Did he sexually abuse either one of the two dead children, with or without her knowledge?

Being a social worker herself, she couldn't have believed that they could take her children away from her because of his criminal history, once he was out of the picture. Her actions and reactions to his arrest have always struck me as extremely strange and innapropriate.

But, in any event, don't you all think it's strange how so many 'suicidal parents' and 'suicidal spouses' mostly always seem to survive their loved ones that they have killed in their dubious 'pacts?'

Rebecca Smith, five, and brother Daniel, just 11 months, were remembered in the poignant funeral service held just a mile from the room in the Costa Brava resort of Lloret de Mar where expat mum Lianne is accused of smothering them to death with a plastic bag.

And other UK-based relatives of the dead children including their grandparents, aunts and uncles, also failed to attend.

Lloret de Mar mayor Xavier Crespo, pain etched on his face, admitted after: 'This is one of the saddest days of my life. It feels like burying my own two children.'

Roman Catholic priest Josep Calm choked back tears as he added: 'I wish these two small children could be playing for ever on the beach at Lloret with other youngsters.

'A society which does not protect its children is a sick society.'

She said: 'Rebecca was a timid child but she gave us a great deal of joy in the classroom.

'She was a very happy child and that's how we will always remember her, happy, content and smiling.

'I'm prepared to accede to the request there should be a pre-sentence report, I am told there is also a psychiatric report.

'You will be remanded into custody and come up in court for sentence in the New Year.'

I read this story when it was first posted. I chilled me to the bone, more so than some others I've read with similar circumstances. Not sure why. Perhaps the photo of Rebecca above, she looks so sad. Or maybe how their mother, lovingly she smiles in that picture as she held little Daniel just hours before killing him. The killing of ones innocent babies, it is entirely the darkest thing I can fathom.

A hysterical attempt to protect them? No, I don't see it that way at all. This woman took her children's right to life and selfishly stole it. I see no honor in that when there were options, choices that would have given them a fair chance at life. So sorry little ones...gone too soon.

But forensic doctor Elisabet Vazquez Martinez told the jury Smith´s injuries were ‘very superficial’ and she had not made a serious attempt to kill herself.
