Prisoner reports to jail with contraband stuck inside self, taken to hospital for removal
When an Erwin man showed up to jail to serve time on a violation, he was not taken directly to his cell but instead to the hospital as officials felt he was hiding something, according to the Unicoi County Sheriff’s Department.
Steven W. Whitson, 31, 225 Hawkins Road, was arrested and charged with introduction of contraband in a penal institution, possession of a schedule VI drug, possession of a schedule II drug, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
According to a release from the Unicoi County Sheriff’s Department, officials had developed probable cause that Whitson would attempt to bring drugs into the Unicoi County Jail upon reporting there to serve 10 days for a house arrest violation.
In his affidavit, Unicoi County Sheriff Kent Harris wrote that Unicoi County General Sessions Court Judge David Shults signed a search warrant to be executed on Whitson. When Whitson arrived at the jail Friday, he was taken to the Unicoi County Memorial Hospital where X-rays were conducted, the release states.

According to the release, a large object was seen on X-ray in Whitson’s anal area. Harris said the object was around 4 inches long and 2 inches wide.
An emergency room doctor removed the object, which was a rubber condom, the release states. The condom allegedly contained a small baggie containing several matches, a striker plate, 3 grams of marijuana, two percocet pills, 6 grams of tobacco, and rolling papers.
Whitson was then arrested and taken to the Unicoi County Jail where he remains in custody. He is set to appear in Unicoi County General Sessions Court on May 27.http://www.johnsoncitypress.com/News/article.php?ID=76728
