Boyfriend Arrested in Sexual Assault, Killing of 2-Year-Old

A man is in jail accused of sexually assaulting and killing his girlfriend's two-year-old daughter, Fort Worth Police said Sunday.

Police were called to a home in the 5900 block of Wilkes Drive Thursday evening after the little girl had been injured, according to a news release issued Sunday. She was transported to Cooks Children's Hospital with head trauma and hemorrhaging.

While at the hospital, medical experts also realized the severely injured toddler had also been sexually assaulted.


Brelynn Nobles died Friday, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office. Her death was ruled a homicide by "blunt trauma to the abdomen."
When questioned about the incident Friday, Fort Worth police released very little information -- only saying they were "still interviewing the child's caregivers."

Nobles' mother said she was at work Thursday and her boyfriend, Donald Ray Sparks, Jr, was caring for her child. Police said they interviewed Sparks, but didn't go into detail as to what he told them.

He was booked into jail Sunday for capital murder of a child under the age of 6, and aggravated sexual assault of a child. His bond has been set at $50,000.

A 20-year-old Fort Worth man is behind bars this weekend, accused in the sexual assault and murder of a 2-year-old girl.

Donald Ray Sparks faces one count of aggravated sexual assault of a child and capital murder in the death of Brelynn Nobles. He is being held in the Mansfield city jail on bonds totaling $100,000.

The Tarrant County medical examiner ruled Brelynn's death a homicide. An autopsy determined that the girl died from internal bleeding associated with shock, resulting from blunt-force trauma to her abdomen.

Investigators from the Fort Worth Police Department’s Crimes Against Children Unit determined that the mother was at work and that the child was being cared for by Sparks, who was the mother’s boyfriend. Sparks is not the father of the child, police said.

Sparks was interviewed several times by investigators. On Saturday, two warrants for his arrest were issued.

Marissa Gonzales, a spokeswoman for Child Protective Services, said Brelynn has four siblings, three of whom lived in the same home. She said the agency has placed those children -- a 4-year-old twin boy and girl and a 1-year-old girl -- with a relative.

"They are all in fine health," Gonzales said. "They don't exhibit any signs of having been abused or neglected."

Mug shots are interesting, aren't they? I expect to see the characters in them looking blotchy, angry or scared, maybe bruised, mussed up -- especially when it's for these kinds of crimes. I just expect that the arrest was a bit of a struggle and happened in the night or while they were on the skids. So, I don't get it when the characters are so clear, unblemished, normal demeanor, and even the occasional smile. Makes me wonder if the shots being released are actually mug shots, or drivers license photos being re-purposed.

This guy really looks untroubled, at most a slight bit defiant. And that's a shame. Why didn't this guy's face find an inconveniently placed wall, hard!? And maybe some low-hanging light fixtures or wind-chimes?

FORT WORTH -- A 20-year-old man arrested Sunday in the death and sexual assault of his girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter told police that the child fell while getting out of the bathtub, according to an arrest warrant affidavit obtained Monday.

The mother told police that Sparks called her to say that something was wrong with Brelynn. She told Sparks to call 911, the affidavit states.
When interviewed by investigators at Cook Children's Medical Center on Wednesday night, Sparks said that he had given the girl a bath and that she had fallen, hitting her head on the tub.
However, medical personnel reported that the girl had massive internal trauma, including severe injuries to her liver, spleen and pancreas. In addition, they noted vaginal tears and other signs of sexual abuse, the affidavit states.
Brelynn died early Friday morning.
An autopsy found vaginal and anal trauma, bleeding in the brain and stomach trauma, the affidavit states. Brelynn's mother told police that her daughter was fine when she left for work.
Sparks was arrested Sunday and remained in the Mansfield Jail on Monday with bail set at $100,000. He was formally charged Monday with capital murder and aggravated sexual assault of a child.
Child Protective Services placed the girl's siblings with a relative. A CPS spokeswoman has said they appeared to be in good health.

Yes, it true, I believe, it was from the autopsy report.

Now whether this means the mom had something to do with the abuse OR this fucker was abusing baby girl before this incident is something we will likely not read on. Someone should have noticed. Mom's the first line of defense. Even if she had nothing to do with the abuse, she should have kicked this fucker out square on his ass once she noticed her baby had bruises.

But when the cousin arrived, Brelynn was naked and unconscious, lying face down on a bed. Sparks claimed she had hit her head in the bathtub.

The cousin called 911 and the toddler was rushed to the hospital but it was too late. Doctors said she had multiple injuries including to her genital area. The medical examiner determined she died from a severe blow to the abdomen.

Jurors took only an hour to convict Sparks. He was sentenced 99 in prison because he was on parole for an aggravated robbery he committed as a teen when he fatally beat Brelynn.

Interesting that she was getting someone else to watch the children. Given that Brelynn had healing bruises, maybe the mother knew this POS couldn't be trusted around her? If that was the case, why keep him around at all?
