I saw no threads on this upcoming horror game so I figured I make one. The buzz is surging a bit as more sites are getting more info and the gaming mags\sites are getting some hands on with the game. Sounds like a blast.

From Left 4 Dead 411, a great Left 4 Dead Fansite (http://www.left4dead411.com/):

Left 4 Dead is a multiplayer cooperative survival horror shooter in development by Turtle Rock Studios and Valve Corporation based on the Source engine to be released Summer 2007 on the PC and Winter 2007 on the Xbox 360.

Cooperative survival horror shooter? - You play as one of four Survivors that must work together to survive. Most levels have your team of 4 trying to go from point A to B, during which you will be attacked by an onslaught of the Infected (zombies}. The pacing has been described as like Counter-Strike Source. Teammates will need to work together by not only just shooting enemies, but by having the ability to heal each other, help each other climb up ledges, pick each other up when one gets knocked down, etc.

Zombies? - The Infected. Early reports claim that they are not slow hulking movie-type zombies, but fast (think 28 Days Later). In addition to the hordes of AI controlled zombies (reports say up to 40 can be seen at once), there will also be four "boss infected" characters that will either be controlled by AI or by real players, depending on the number of people on the server. These four are the Boomer, Hunter, Smoker and Tank.

Left 4 Dead hand's on review from IGN.com (http://pc.ign.com/articles/760/760290p1.html) has an in-depth write-up of Left 4 Dead gameplay with some great info such as:

The Infected hordes have some cool animations relating to the effects of angular momentum. As they run around corners toward your location, you'll see their torsos bow outward and shoulders tilt inward like a real person's would, instead of just robotically turning a corner in stiff, lifeless fashion. When 20 of them are doing this at once as your flashlight is plastering the walls with frantic shadows and teammates are screaming for help, it gets pretty intense, reminiscent of scenes from the film 28 Days Later.

Anyone else looking forward to this one? I have strayed from playing on-line games as I just cannot stand assholes, but I would love to get some groups together from here and do some shooting\biting.

PCGamer has some video of gameplay as well:

I am liking where the game is headed, as the focus on teamplay both intrigues me as well as makes me a bit hesitant as I get real aggravated when playing with other people.

The only other thing that has me a bit worried is that in the videos, there is a LOT of backwards running. I don't mind it, but I don't want the whole game consisting of 5 steps forward, 3 steps backward type of thing. That will all hinge solely on level design and given pathways from point A to point B, I guess. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the AI and the way the zombies are "released" are done correctly and that there are multiple ways to reach your target destination.

If not, what may start out as a fun game could lead to a tedious and boring gameplay experience after a short amount of time.

I am interested in the "AI Director" they speak about in the video. The Director will supposedly control the drama during game play. To keep the player from being bored or conversely, burned out on action, the Director monitors each survivors game play experience by estimating their tension level and creating a series of highs and lows depending on whether it thinks the player is bored, or experiencing too much action.

If that actually works as stated, I would love to see similar stuff implemented in other FPS based games without reliance being solely on triggers.

Looks very entertaining. This decade seems to have seen a reemergence in zombie outbreak movies. :)

If you like the look of this, be sure to check out The Umbrella Chronicles for Wii.
