EWA BEACH, Hawaii -- A murder-suicide in an Ewa Beach neighborhood left four children, aged between 8-19, orphaned and the community in shock.
Police said Domingo Dekito, 39, -- known by his nickname, "Bonnie," -- shot his wife, Della, to death and then turned the gun on himself just before midnight Saturday. They said two of the couple's four children were inside the home when shooting occurred.
KITV's Catherine Cruz reported that family and friends began gathering at the Kaukolu Street home to deal with the aftermath.
"I heard arguing and yelling, and I thought it was kids at first. I heard a female yell and then four shots in succession and then one final shot," neighbor Greg Fernandez said.
Neighbors said Domingo first shot his wife in the bathroom and then went into the garage, where he shot himself. The two girls who were home at the time then ran to a neighbor's house for help, they said.
The two eldest children, a son and a daughter, were not at home at the time fo the shooting, officials said.
Fernandez said the Dekito children would often play with his grandkids.
"We are all stunned, and the kids of the family -- you can imagine how they feel. My heart and all our hearts go out to them," Fernandez said.
"Pray for the family and the kids especially. This is a good neighborhood. The neighbors look out for each other. It's shocking," neighbor Horace Dudoit said.
Neighbors said the couple worked in Waipio, and earlier in the afternoon, Domingo Dekito went golfing with friends but never let on that anything was wrong, his friends said.
