Private detectives searching for a former boyfriend of Olivia Newton-John who vanished five years ago say their hunt is over after they received conclusive proof that he was still alive.
Patrick McDermott, 48, disappeared during a night fishing trip in California, having broken up with the Australian singer and actress after a nine-year relationship.
He was believed to have fallen overboard but his body was never recovered. Newton-John described his disappearance as "heartbreaking".
However, private investigators claimed last January that he was alive and well, and living on a sailing boat off Mexico's Pacific coast.
He alleged that McDermott faked his death to escape mounting debts and to enable his teenage son to benefit from a $100,000 US life insurance policy.
