ATLANTA --
A pair of golden lion tamarin monkey twins were born at Zoo Atlanta this week, helping international efforts to save the rare animals from extinction.

Zoo Atlanta spokeswoman Keisha Hines said the twins were born Thursday to parents Robin and Theo. The infants, each estimated to weigh about 2 ounces, are the first offspring for Robin and Theo. The babies will begin appearing in public next week.

Atlanta is one of just two zoos in the country that allow tamarin monkeys to roam freely in trees outside their indoor habitat starting in April each year. The monkeys are tracked with radio collars.

The endangered monkeys -- similar in size to squirrels -- are named for the vivid orange manes framing their faces. Wild populations of the monkeys have been on the increase in recent years through a coordinated effort of zoos and conservation organizations.http://www.wsbtv.com/news/22888236/detail.html#

I live near this zoo and I have always loved that these little monkey's really do run around the zoo. It is almost as cool as the Jacksonville zoo's giraffe area. There is a large platform that you walk stand on and the giraffes walk right up and you can pet them! A zoo keeper is always right there watching and it is so awesome!

I live about 50 miles south of Atlanta and I love the Zoo, too. tho it's been several years since I've been there. The last time was with about 30 Cub scouts and we spent part of the day looking for Darryl and Stephen cause they took their own special tour. We finally found them about an hour later at the Monkey house and we expected them to be scared (they were only about 10 yo) but, nope, they were more upset that we found them. I really loved my 11 years of cub scouts!!

I remember taking my daughter there when she was about 18 months old. She called every single animal a "shoe". That was my most memorable zoo visit to date. I love watching the video of seeing her point her tiny little finger at the huge lion and saying "shoe" and then again at the elephants "shoe".... Oh memories.
