NEW YORK (WPIX) -
NYPD divers came to the rescue of a seal that became entangled in a floating piece of debris off the waters of Staten Island.

The rescuers were called to the scene shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday to help the seal who had been spotted in the water of the Raritan Bay off the Atlantic Ocean. The animal was apparently bobbing up and down in the water, frantically trying to free itself.

The seal appeared to be stuck on something white, although it has not been determined what that object was.

Two NYPD divers swam out to the helpless animal and cut the seal loose from the debris, which officials say likely blew out to sea from this weekend's brutal storm.

It is unclear how long the seal was stuck for. http://www.wpix.com/news/wpix-divers-rescue-trapped-seal,0,2681541.story
