I can see losers running to lawyers to get a jump on the lawsuits
Love the comment about Walmart needing to be more responsible, like the company really could have done anything about this, its like saying a company should be more responsible because they got hacked, or a rape victim should be more responsible for getting raped in daylight jogging in an open park
If there's money to be made someone will point a finger and sue. I'll be surprised if Sharptongue isn't all over this by the end of the day going for his pound of flesh

"All Black People" Asked to Leave S. Jersey Wal-Mart
Store is looking at security video to figure out who made the announcement
Updated 10:50 AM EDT, Wed, Mar 17, 2010
Wal-Mart officials are looking at security tapes after an announcement was made for "all black people'' to leave a store in South Jersey.
A man used the public-address system at the Route 42 store in Washington Township Sunday night and calmly announced: "Attention Wal-Mart customers: All black people leave the store now.''
Patricia Covington and Shelia Ellington were inside the store when it happened and told the Courier Post that customers and store employees looked stunned when they heard it.
"In 2010, I want to know why such statements are being made because it flies in the face of what we teach them [our kids] at home, and that's tolerance for people," said Ellington.
Weird News Photos
Ellington and other customers let store management and police know they were upset.
They asked the store to use the same announcement system to apologize to customers that night, which it did.
Wal-Mart management called the incident "unacceptable," and said it's working to make sure nothing like this happens at any other stores.
Washington Township police and the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office are investigating the incident as a possible bias crime.
"I can't believe it in this day and age," Covington told the paper. "Wal-Mart needs to be more responsible."
Covington and Elllington are boycotting the store.

Disgruntled employee, much? I would say they should look at anyone who's been recently reprimanded or close to being let go.
Or someone who's been there for 15 years...Lord knows I'd want to fuck things up after that much time there, lol.
Yeah, I'm sure there will be lawsuits too. Anyone with half a brain in their head is going to realize it was an individual action, not something the store endorsed. Already though, you can see people getting their backs up. It's just a matter of time before the volley of ridiculous lawsuits come.

What a bunch of whiny shits. Do they actually expect that the idot that did it can't/won't do it somewhere else? I advise they lock themselves in a basement without utilities or contact with society.
While what the asshat did is unacceptable, their reaction is almost as idiotic.

When I worked for Wal-Mart all you had to do to operate the PA system was pick up a phone and hit the PA button!! Anybody could have done it. They have phones all over the store, at least down here in the backwards south. The manager are just now getting the head set phones.
In the store I worked in there was a phone in every department sitting on a post right out in the open. Even if the PA button isn't marked trial and error will get you there and if the store is operating on a skeleton staff then there's no one to see or stop them.
I think you're right someone is loking to soak Wal-Mart again for something WM really has no control over. Except maybe they should hide the phones better.

This reminds me of a similar story that came up with a mall here in the Denver Area, specifically the Aurora Mall.
Those who know the area would know that Aurora is largely low-income, and African-American. For a long time, the Aurora Mall looked pretty trashy, and was known for violence, shooting, and other unpleasant things.
In response, the owning company decided to redesign and refit the mall. They said their goal was to "improve the atmosphere and to reduce the unpleasant elements.. namely the young black shoppers."
Needless to say, the woman who wrote that press release was promptly fired. I'm personally impressed someone who would say it would get into Public Relations as a career.

If they want to keep the coloured people away, all they have to do is play country music over the PA system.

The Washington Township Wal-Mart where someone used the public-address system to announce Sunday night that black shoppers should leave the store is making changes to discourage further incidents. The actions came as township police yesterday checked "on a couple of leads" they hoped would help identify the person. Police said they did not know whether the person was an employee.
Store officials said they were working to reduce the number of public-accessible phones with public-address capabilities. Authorities said that the statement could have been made from one of 25 phones in the Wal-Mart, and that not all were in range of security cameras.

Action News has learned there's been an arrest in connection with the racist announcement made over a South Jersey Walmart intercom.
Earlier Friday, Walmart issued a statement saying their probe determined that a specific customer may have been responsible.

Police expect to release the arrest details Saturday.

I find it interesting that when people talk about segregation, that its ALWAYS the white people who get blamed. When -at least in my perception anyway- that it goes both ways....
The City of Milwaukee is a great example of this. When manufacturing started taking a nose dive in the 80's those that could afford to leave and move west into Waukesha county did. leaving those that couldn't or didn't want to to fend for themselves, in what is basically a dying city, which has now become the murder, robbery, gang banging capital of Wisconsin.....
How exactly is this a white persons fault?
Back to topic though....
Bias and intimidation?
What the hell kinda charge is that?
A misdemeanor at best?
Anyone care to bet that they add a hate crime enhancer?

I'm right with you Rockin'........I feel safer in the city than I do in any po dunk town I have ever been in. Its like stepping back in time and its just too damn creepy.
I live in what most would consider a "scary" "unsafe" neighborhood in Brooklyn and have never been bothered in any way........and I am literally the only white person around. My neighborhood is beautiful, full of gorgeous brownstones etc. Muslim oils, mosques, the whole shebang. I have been welcomed with open arms by my neighbors and everyone else. Living proof that self segregation is born of fear and not necessary. If people stuck around instead of making assumptions about people that appear to be different than them on the surface, they might actually learn something.
The poster "Cheaney" is referring to "White Flight" Whatever. Let them flee. They are missing out and they don't even know it.

If you were welcomed with open arms, it had to do with your positive and intelligent attitude and that attitude would be welcome anywhere... even here in hicksville.

I hear you Dakota, there is ignorance every where, intelligent people tend to open their minds to what or who is different from them, regardless of where they may live. At times, (particularly in this very thread) the comments on this board regarding race and discrimination can be pretty jaw droppingly ignorant and pathetic. Actually a lot of the comments regarding this subject (white/black walmarts) were laughable in their sheer stupidity.
"Po Dunk" was not a "better than you attitude", it was a response to the term "City Trash" (not said by you) If being city trash means that I do not choose my stores by the race of the people that shop there means that I feel that I am better than someone than I guess I am. That statement was pretty po'dunk if you ask me.

A 16-year-old Atlantic County boy has been arrested in relation to an incident at the Walmart store in Turnersville last Sunday.
The teen was arrested Friday afternoon.
He faces harassment and bias intimidation charges for allegedly using the store public's address system to say "all black people, leave the store."
Police would not identify him or the other person he was with Sunday because they are both juveniles. Authorities said the teen was released to his parents following the arrest.
Gloucester County Prosecutor Sean Dalton said the punishment for the crime, a fourth degree offense, would depend upon the if the accused has a prior record. Authorities also declined to give the prankster's race.
Dalton said that does not factor into the prosecution.

Rafael Muñiz, the Washington Township police chief, said that while the cameras did not record anyone speaking on the public-address system, images showed three people — the suspect, a young man and a woman — standing near the phone just before the announcement, and rushing from the store just after it.
Investigators also scoured Facebook, MySpace and YouTube, and found postings, including some that the police chief said involved “kids bragging” about what happened.
With the help of anonymous tipsters, he added, investigators were led to the suspect, who was arrested Friday.
“We got lucky,” Chief Muñiz said Saturday at a news conference.
The suspect had been accompanied to the store by a friend and the friend’s mother, the authorities said. Neither the friend nor his mother had been charged, though Chief Muñiz left open the possibility that they could face prosecution for failing to report a crime.

The 16-year-old boy who allegedly asked "all black people" to leave a South Jersey Walmart last week is the latest in a long line of pranksters who've baffled customers with odd announcements in the retailer's stores across the country.
But while others have hijacked the public-address system to slash prices, play music or page Jesus and Michael Vick, authorities say that the announcement at the Washington Township, Gloucester County, Walmart was no prank.
"He didn't just go on the loudspeaker and say basketballs are half-priced for the next half-hour," Gloucester County Prosecutor Sean Dalton said. "He said something a little more disturbing."
[...]
A law-enforcement source said that the teen was a white student at Buena Regional High School, in Buena Vista Township, Atlantic County. He was arrested and charged with harassment and bias intimidation before being released to his parents.
[...]
There's an entire Web site dedicated to Walmart pranks, and YouTube has hundreds of videos of teens and young adults accessing the intercoms at stores. There's even a Facebook page dedicated to the code pranksters need to push to get on the PA system.
One YouTube poster claims that a video of a male impersonating a professional wrestler on the PA system was taken at the Washington Township store.
Loretta Winters, president of the Gloucester County NAACP, said that there have been race-related announcements at the Washington Township store in the past and that police are looking into them.
"The manager said it was almost the same thing verbatim," she said. "The first time it happened, they took it as a prank. It doesn't make any sense that these systems would be open to the public."
At the Walmart on Columbus Boulevard, in South Philadelphia, shoppers said that they had never heard odd or racist comments over the PA system, but there were mixed opinions over the severity of the South Jersey case.
Shirley Outlaw, a teacher in Center City, said the case was being blown out of proportion.
"I think he took advantage of an opportunity and did something dumb," Outlaw said. "It was spur of the moment, obviously not well thought out, and I don't think it was derogatory."
Dolores Coker, 30, said the announcement was more proof that kids "make no sense."
"I don't know what goes through their heads," she said.
Another woman, who asked not the be identified, said that she would have been very offended if she heard the announcement.
"It's obvious racism exists in this country," she said. "It's sad, but not everyone would understand."

No, not really, because everyone knows Seattle doesn't really have any black people. I don't say "urban" vs. "black" to be more PC... I say "urban" because I can't really say "black". Hardly anywhere in Seattle will you find a black majority.
To me, it's just the difference between city vs. rural in general. I had always heard of something outsiders refer to as "the Seattle Freeze". Essentially, they say we're "polite, but not friendly." I would consider that to be generally true of most major cities, and I've been to plenty of those. It wasn't until recently, however, that I went on my first vacation to the sticks, at which point I really experienced the difference between city folk and urban folk. It's a pretty significant disparity.
That said, I love the city. I probably won't ever leave. But there's really no comparison in terms of immediate hospitality.

Granted, I would add that I still don't know most of my neighbors by first name, maybe only a few more on sight. I'll talk to them when they initiate conversation, but otherwise I'm hiding in my home with the blinds drawn.

That said, I love the city. I probably won't ever leave. But there's really no comparison in terms of immediate hospitality.

Serious question.

Jesus Christ. You certainly make a mountain out of a molehill. Moon was just having an opinion that wasn't even racist.
This whole incident is exactly the kind of thing that make the real racism issue fail to be resolved. People need to quit over reacting to a single incident by a pair of dumb kids. If the offended parties really thought Walmart sanctioned this at the time it happened, that says a lot. People talk shit every day, this just happened to be over a PA which elevates it. Just the fact this thread got derailed on such bullshit bickering is proof that people are looking for something that isn't there.

Bottom line is a child pulled a prank. Now people are over reacting to the situation and boycotting the company. This wasnt sanctioned by Wal-Mart. Some people over react to stupid non-sence.

I never read anyone saying they were BOYCOTTING Walmart, I read they were afraid to go back because of what was said. It also has come to light that this isn't the first time someone pulled this "prank" at this Walmart; however, this is NOW the first time they are actually DOING anything to stop the "prankster." The fact that something this evilly racist (whether a "prank" or not) is acceptable to anyone especially a 16 year old boy who was born at least 25 YEARS after the civil rights movement is absolutely disgusting to me.
I shop at a "rural" Walmart... there are just as many rude people, ethnic people and nice people there as the "urban" Walmart I also shop at... the ONLY difference is that the "rural" Walmart usually has the stuff I want to buy in the sizes I need them in and the "urban" one is closer to home but sold out of the sizes I need because there are more shoppers to compete with.

Thank you for the correction. I was under the impression that this was going to be blown out of proportion. I agree it was a prank that was not funny and the boy should suffer the consequences of his actions. What he did was racially driven and is not excusable. Wal-Mart has its flaws dont get me wrong. I find your commentary to be extremely ignorant.
When I shop, I look at prices and not the color of the skin of the shoppers. I choose my stores on the quality of the merchandise and convenience of location not the color of the skin of the people that shop there.

Colour and creed make no difference to me when I go shopping. Enviroment however does play a role. I would rather pay a dollar more somewhere if the employees are friendly and helpful. Well, apparently, Moonlilly, you think "environment" depends on race. Just as a refresher, here's what you said:
The difference between the walmarts in cecil county and the walmarts in anne arundel are the black people. I much prefer the white walmarts. I prefer rednecks to city trash. I know thats coming out all wrong but oh well.
Even you recognized the inappropriate nature of that statement with your disclaimer "I know that's coming out wrong".
This is stereotypical racism. There's no other way to interpret it. If you meant something different, you should have hit the Backspace button a few times and retooled the sentence a bit. But you didn't. You even added "but oh well".
A statement like "I prefer the white walmarts" can't be undone with the standard "I have black friends," defense. Comedians make fun of crackers like yourself. :tongue2:
Echo was understandably taken aback by your comment. Sometimes you have to suffer the consequences for the statements you make, especially when, instead of apologizing and making it clear that you didn't mean it like that, you defiantly stand by what was a painfully ignorant comment.
Odds are, the quality you encounter at various Walmarts has to do with socio-economics rather than race. Unfortunately, in this country, socio-economics have been closely tied to race. The "black Walmarts" you've encountered probably had more poor folk in them as opposed to "white Walmarts", which is what accounts for the disparity in service.
Echo was brash in her response to your comment, but now is not the time for you to wave the anti-PC flag. This isn't about what's PC and what's not. It's about what sounds ignorant and what doesn't. If you don't fancy yourself ignorant, I'd find another way to say what you mean if I were you.

Im not going to back peddle and re-word what I said. What I said came out wrong and out of context. Different areas of the country have different issues. Im pretty sure it would have been funnier and not to some if I would have been knocking the white trailer trash. But no I said something about the area closer to the cities here that are black areas. I dont take back what I said. I only appolgise for the way it came out. That was wrong but whats been done cannot be un-done.
Since redneck seems to have many different meanings in the various parts of the country I will just say that here it means someone who is country, in a rural area where there is farming, fishing, and or crabing. Someone like myself is redneck because I go out and work outside every day. Along with various other things.
As this has taken a turn away from the orginal topic this will be my last post to it. It wasnt here to debate racism but the act of someone who thought it would be funny to say what they did over the PA system. That turn was my responsibility and im sorry for that.

Seriously, as it goes in most towns it depends on what part of town you live in what race of people tend to shop there it's just socio-economic. I stopped at a Walmart once way upper North side of town close to where my MIL lives and couldn't believe my eyes. It seemed the isles were paved in gold. If you are trying to actually say that "Rednecks" (In the stereotypical sense of the word) are non violent, peace loving, people you are more ridiculous than I ever thought you were.
Do your own research (that is if you can actually read anything but hate literature) and answer your own question.

Here on my side of town, it's predominantly Latino, so I'd fit right in only I don't shop there often mostly 'cause crazy folk hang out there, and I'm not just talking Latino's either. I have witnessed, a white lady screaming at a box of cereal as spit spewed about her, black folks relaxing at the bbq display and bringing out the meat they just bought and a Latino woman yelling obscenities at the top of her lungs as her toddler sit waiting in the middle of the isle.
Seriously, as it goes in most towns it depends on what part of town you live in what race of people tend to shop there it's just socio-economic. I stopped at a Walmart once way upper North side of town close to where my MIL lives and couldn't believe my eyes. It seemed the isles were paved in gold. I see now why she says she loves shopping at Walmart.
What this kid(s) did was a punk thing to do, teenagers are much punks.
LMAO at the cereal box and the spit.

That's actually how it originated in the SOUTH as well Pete.
People working in the fields and going home with a neck that was sun burned.
Maybe that's the reason Jeff Foxworthy doesn't talk with a CT accent.
I must say though that it's admirable for people from across the country taking up arms in defense of the term 'redneck' and..uh..defending(?) the good name.
Umm, the term redneck comes from West Virginia, when the railroads were built. It had nothing to do with sunburn on the neck, as is commonly believed. It is actually from the red neckerchiefs that the locals working on the railroad wore around their necks.

Actually (depending on what you read) the term 'redneck' comes from Scotland.
Never heard that about WV. I find it questionable due to how far (and wide) down south it became.
I'll look it up though. Just not right now. I walked in the door about 10 minutes ago and the dog, he needs a'walking.
If you have a site that would be awesome.

Here ya go backlash, looked it up
The term "redneck" was also used in The West Virginia Coal Miners March (1921)
oddly enough
By 1900, "rednecks" was in common use to designate the political coalitions of the poor white farmers in the South. The same group was also often called the "wool hat boys" (for they opposed the rich, who wore silk hats). A newspaper notice in Mississippi in August 1891 called on rednecks to rally at the polls at the upcoming primary election

I would cite my sources for the comments but the page does a fantastic job at that.

*blink blink*
*mumbles* momma always told me never to walk into a landmine but I'm doing it anyway.
Alright, so let me get this right. Some folks in here think that the NAACP are going to get butthurt?
And someone posed a question about the race of murderers and the like.
And then some folks are getting all bent out of shape because of supposed classism?
Puh-lease.
As I said before, what the guy did is not that evil/horrid. Yeah it's a dick move, but I honestly do not believe he should be arrested, charged with anything or even get a goddamn hate crime enhancement.
I will admit, the NAACP was helpful back in the day. But now, it's really a laughingstock among folks who want real change. I mean hell, even the term Colored is a bit dated. And maybe they will/have get involved. And they may/may not make a big deal out it. But you know what? That's not all black folks. These are sue-hungry bastards who I honestly think are eff hypocrites. The whole lot of them. Maybe when they keel over(why won't they DIE?!) we can get some folks who really do care about helping blacks. Like Aaron Mcgruder or something. Hell, I'd nominate myself but I'd probally pull a Dr. King(if you watch the Boondocks you'll know what I mean) except I do NOT want Oprah as president. She panders too much to the "woo" crowd and I want someone who has a brain, not a vacant expression when some idiot is jumping up and down on a perfectly good couch.
*ahem*
Anyway. About African American culture. All in All, it needs an overhaul. I'm going to be real for a moment and well, you gotta remember, this is what I see so it's different for other folks, okay?
When I mean an overhaul, I mean something needs to be changed from the top to the bottom. From country to city. River to dale. I walk around in the rundown parts of town(Urban means city, and as a lover of the city I refuse to use the term urban to describe black. It is a misnomer and needs to stop) I see alot of folks trying to just scrape by. And well, yes they are mostly AA. And sadly, in this group there are alot of folks who live by the "party hard, buy rims, and f***k as many hoes as possible". They went to school , but because it was not stressed by their parents to get an education, they have dead end jobs. The folks that do come from this background that DO want to do something with themselves, get treated like shit. My mom wasn't raised anywhere dangerous(b/c she was a military kid) but even then both parents had to work just to sqeak by. She said told me that when she reached teen years, she realized she wanted to be able to sustain such a life where she would NEVER need to come home.
My grandmother backed her(she also had a hard upbringing and had to fight her family to become a nurse), but the rest of our family made fun of her and accused her of being uppity. When she left for college, she only came home to see me(a deal she made with grandma) and talk to an enrollment officer for the military. The rest is history. But there are not alot of folks like that in this group. They are like roses found in briar patches. This would be different if there was an emphasis on education, not getting money the easy way. If we(collectively) took the focus off of these ballers and more on the educators, doctors, and lawyers. I think we'd be half way there.
The other half would be getting help for the helpless and educating(again) on diseases and the like. It would be awesome if the churches could get involved(church is pretty important for AA's. It's our nucleus) and really stressed screenings for hereditary disease and mental disorders. Yes, I said mental disorders. Having "issues" is not something that's really tolerated in AAC. As I was told by a classmate when we talked about my depression diagnosis, "Blacks do not go to therapists, they go to church." That's a problem that i'd love to really talk more about but I think I've said too much.
What I was trying to say is that for AA's to really move forward, there needs to be a paradigm shift. That includes knowing when to sue(like when your doctor botches your skin grafts) and when not to(this wal mart incident).
For myself, I love wal mart and it's low prices. But I am and will always be a Target girl. The stuff lasts longer and I can find stuff that are my size that doesn't look like a damn muu muu.
Sorry I wrote so much,

If you are trying to actually say that "Rednecks" (In the stereotypical sense of the word) are non violent, peace loving, people you are more ridiculous than I ever thought you were.
Do your own research (that is if you can actually read anything but hate literature) and answer your own question.
Oh and.......there are bad, ignorant, violent people in EVERY race and in every area of this country. Don't you read the threads in this forum everday? I understand there is no problem with crime among African-Americans. I understand there are no violent African-American street-gangs in the United States. I understand that Detroit, Philadelphia, Newark, Gary and other such locations are serene places to live....much safer than the more Caucasian oriented suburbs. I understand that there are virtually no African-Americans in prison. In fact it is very rare for an African-American to be sent to prison...and if he does happen to wind up in such an institution, it is the fault of the white establishment. African-Americans are far less likely to commit crimes, in comparison to their percentage within the overall population, than are their caucasian counter-parts.
Of course, I never said that "rednecks" were "non violent, peace loving, people." I only made the statement that "rednecks" are not responsible for most violent crimes in the United States. Of course, Justice Department statistics bear this out.
Yes, there are bad people in every race. But, if you cannot understand that there is a problem within the African-American community in regards to crime, you are the one with blinders on, not me.
As for my reading material....I just finished Thackeray's Vanity Fair (again), and I must admit...there seems to be a bit of Miss Becky Sharp in you, although without the coquettish charm. She didn't come to an entirely bad end, you know. :wink2:

A Winslow man, who says he was traumatized by a public-address announcement directed at black shoppers in a Walmart store, is seeking $1 million in damages.
Donnell Battie has sued the retail giant over a March 14, 2010, incident at a Walmart on the Black Horse Pike in Washington Township. In that incident, a teenaged shopper allegedly got on the store’s intercom system and announced: “Attention, Walmart customers. All black people must leave the store.”
A 16-year-old from Atlantic County was later charged with harassment and bias intimidation in connection with that incident and a similar announcement in December 2009.
In his lawsuit, Battie says Walmart was negligent in failing to control access to the intercom system and that the announcement was “reasonably likely to harass or intimidate black people.”
Battie says he has needed medical care due to the incident’s impact. His lawsuit contends the incident caused “severe and disabling emotional and psychological harm, resulting in depression, anxiety, anger, loss of sleep, loss of appetite, paranoia, anti-social tendencies and loss of enjoyment in life activities.”
Battie is a middle-aged black man who’s experienced previous incidents of bias, said his attorney, John Klamo of Cherry Hill.
“Prior to this, he was receiving medical care for various issues related to being discriminated against,” said Klamo, who offered no details. “Here, he was in a public place and again prejudice rears its ugly head.”
Walmart spokesman Greg Rossiter noted the firm has apologized for the incident and has “updated our intercom system in the store to prevent this from happening in the future.”
[...]
Rossiter said the company was “appalled” by the incident, which he described as “backward and mean-spirited.”
