This (http://www.time.com/time/arts/article/0,8599,1728754,00.html?cnn=yes) TIME article recently examined the cultural significance of this (http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.wordpress.com/) brillant little blogspot titled simply, "Stuff White People Like". Perhaps I'm wrong, but I can't help but feel like this journalist makes the very common mistake of falsely identifying socio-economic culture with specific races. In fact, it even seems to trip her up:

So, this is a blog making fun of white culture — albeit a very specific slice of urban elitist white culture — and it completely implicates me. What's going on here? Was my dad right when he fretted that I was bougie and sididdy as a child? Was my boyfriend Keirn, now fiancé, right when years ago he, without thinking, turned to me in a black nightclub and said — I am not joking — "We're the only white people here"?

I called Damali Ayo, a black social critic and artist who wrote the book How to Rent a Negro — a satire inspired by the same sentiments as another thing that white people like (#14), Having Black Friends. She thinks the blog, oddly, represents a form of social progress. "I'm really glad that white people are stepping up to critique white culture, because in general white people like to deny that there is such a thing as white culture," Ayo says.

I don't have the resume that Ms. Ayo has, but I don't buy it. I've always felt that the notion that one can "act white" or "act black" was a falsehood that undermines the progress of race relations in this country. Acting "black" is not black at all. It's acting poor and urban, just like acting "white" tends to be characterised by an education and wholesomeness that is not intrinsic to being white. It does us all a disservice to associate these behaviors with race. Sure, due to the demographics involved, it is true that black people are more likely to "act black" and that white people are more likely to "act white", but this is only because black people are disproportionately poor and urban.

This explains why the journalist has been "implicated" by Stuff White People Like and why Eminem seamlessly emulates "blackness". The only reason race plays in at all is because of socio-economic disparity between the races. This article touched on this fact, but it was negated by Ms. Ayo's statement, reenforcing the notion of "white culture".

That being said - it is a hilarious blog. Here's the list. How white are you? Judging by this list, I'm not very "white".

#22 Having Two Last Names - What kind of effiminate fool takes a woman's name?

Incidentally...I've had two men consider taking my last name, theoretically (as I remain unmarried), and have been okay with children taking my last name. Both have common Irish names, however, and are out of touch with their fathers. I'd like to say it's ethnicity envy (my last name is badass and will not change for anyone), but, more likely, their opinion of their last name has been tainted negatively, seeing as the ones who gave it to them are fuckers.

That being said, neither of these men are particularly effeminate.

But, I think you're right. In most cases, it's some fruity, equal rights bullshit. :p

Some studies have found that between people of the same *racial group often have more differences amongst themselves than individuals of different race groups. Since for most people the sense of sight is the biggest determent for how they interact with the world physical differences based on sight are the most intuitively focused on. Some people, quite literally, have a very hard time "looking" past differences. Again we find that evolutionary reasons are behind morally wrong gut judgements; most people are not inclined to enter relationships with groups of people that look vastly different than them, and reproductively speaking, this makes complete sense.

On top of this our developed sense of generalization condemns us to instinctively make judgements based on what we percieve most of a culture to be like. This once useful survival instinct has no doubt created an inclination towards treating others based on stereotypes rather than individuality. Our minds group things without us even being aware; the reptillian goo in charge of our limbic system, is really a bastard.
-----------------------------------------------------
*I use the term race disparigingly because in biological terms people of different skin colors do not have enough genetic differences to quanity a race seperation. The term racist shouldn't even apply to people that hate others based on skin color, at least not in a scientific context. It's ironic in a way, because calling someone a racist actually perpetuates outdated notions of what race is, thus leading to more racism. I would love to see the word, and racial based thinking, go away, and I think with a little bit of introspection our culture can do this.

I just answered this whole long thing and then lost it last night. I will say I am somewhat white, and can not believe no one really watched The Wire, or even knew what it was for that matter.
It was the best show on TV, I am so sad it is over. Hub and I watched it since the beginning.
I would highly recommend renting a season. You won't regret it.

Man, this thread has turned into one of those horrible myspace surveys.

So, you noticed that, too, huh? :p

I should have seen it coming. I really had just wanted to illustrate that some white people don't like most of those things, because it's not about being white, it's about being wealthy and liberal (generally).

That being said, I've totally read everyone's responses. I like seeing how white (or not) people are. For example, Asp is even more hood than I am. :cool:

Total shock, no? I really thought Aspy was whiter than I am. I was so wrong.

I haven't scored everyone, but I fear I really might be the whitest person here. Help me!

Well, you both appear to be whiter than I am, so...I suppose I'll be washing dishes in your taqueria?

LMAO...What a backward fucking taqueria that would be. White people behind the counter saying, "Lo siento, no hablo Espanol. Necesita hablar Ingles"; mention of "la Migra" would amount to no more than a confused expression...and there would be flour tortillas everywhere...(enter Twilight Zone music here)

That being said, I've totally read everyone's responses. I like seeing how white (or not) people are. For example, Asp is even more hood than I am. :cool:

lol how am i more hood? because i dont like the outside? Its just because i dont like to get dirty.

I think that I really am not a "normal" white person is, my fathers family is from Arkansas, (not that i think that all people from there are) and they are the most raciest, homophobic backwards thinking people I have ever met. And even from a young age I saw that they did not like people just because of how they looked. And me growing up in the city I lived in the “white” people were in the other category when they did the did the population break down. So really when I am around to many white people I am afraid that on of the teenage boys are going to freak out and shot us all with a hunting rifle.

Lol and now that I live in Orange County I totally do not fit in with my fellow city mates. I figured I am the only non religious, liberal, registered Democrat in at least a 20 mile radius!

I am convinced that my bones are slowly turning into styrofoam. I am also dimly aware that there may be some negro running for President, although I am not sure. This may be a film. Why anyone would want to watch a film about a negro Presidential candidate is beyond my comprehension, but people are really stupid. The actor looks familiar, I think he was on that show Happy Times or Jeffrey's Sons or something like that.

I can't even complete that list. According to all that I must be the non-whitest white woman ever. Much of that stuff, while I am aware of it, has little or no bearing on my life. Most of North Dakota wouldn't be white using that list... and we're probably the whitest state ever.

Some of it is just down right stupid. Half that list is trendy crap that will be "out" before the list is done. What was the trend in my "youth" is not there and in 25 years most of that list will be "out" too.

But it was fun reading everyone's answers and thinking of smart ass ones I would use...

I took the premise "All is fair in love and war".... and did some digging.
I couldn't find one for Native Americans.

Stuff Asian People Like (http://www.asian-central.com/stuffasianpeoplelike/stuff-asian-people-like-full-list/)

Stuff Black People Like (http://www.stuffebplike.com/?page_id=38)

Stuff Latino People Like (http://stufflatinpeoplelike.com/?page_id=12)

If I am now considered a racists - so be.
I am an American and race doesn't mean jack to me.

Good finds Gilbrit. I peeked too...
Stuff Jewish People Like (http://stuffjewishpeoplelike.wordpress.com/)
Stuff Educated Black People Like (http://www.stuffebplike.com/)
Stuff White Trash People Like (http://stuffwhitetrashpeoplelike.wordpress.com/)
Stuff Jewish Young Adults Like (http://stuffjewishyoungadultslike.wordpress.com/)
Stuff College People Like (http://stuffcollegepeoplelike.wordpress.com/)
Stuff Lesbians Like (http://gracethespot.com/?page_id=112)
Stuff Assholes Like (http://stuffassholeslike.com/)
Stuff Nobody Likes (http://www.stuffnobodylikes.com/?page_id=14)
Stuff God Hates (http://stuffgodhates.wordpress.com/)
Then i found a list at DoobyBrain.com (http://www.doobybrain.com/2008/04/08/websites-about-stuff-people-like/) that includes the above & Gilbrit's list plus links to:
* Stuff Christians Like
* Stuff Unimaginative Bloggers Like
* Stuff Straight People Like
* Stuff Iranians Like
* Stuff Educated Latinos Like
* Stuff Desis/Brown People Like
* Stuff Cajun People Like
* Stuff Country People Like
* Stuff Fashion People Like
* Stuff Black People Love
* Stuff Black Greeks Like
* Stuff Assholes Like
* Stuff Queer People Love
* Stuff Asperger People Like

I think that the fact that all those lists (and probably more) exist just exposes much about stereotypes but nothing about race.

I was trying to think about something that could be made into a list that would actually reflect "race" and not culture or a subset of a culture. Couldn't think of a thing... can any of you?
