Bernalillo County Sheriff's Deputies are investigating a mother whose 2-month-old infant died after she left to go drinking at a friend's house, according to a Sheriff's Department Spokesperson.
The baby's mother, Christina Dozal, 27, left the baby alone with her other 8-year-old child, according to BSCO Deputy Lawrence Koren.
Emergency crews were called to an apartment on the 2100 Block of Isleta SW early Monday morning after reports that a baby inside stopped breathing.
"A bunch of cops came and I looked outside," Neighbor Ray Anzures said. "And bunch of people were saying 'The baby, the baby.'"
The 2-month-old baby later died at the University of New Mexico Hospital.
Investigators said the mother left the two kids at home to go drink at a friend's apartment nearby.
Dozal has not been arrested or charged with a crime, but that could change soon as deputies investigate her daughter's death, according to Koren.
The Office of the Medical Examiner has not determined how the baby died, but neighbors said she had health problems.
"She could not breathe, I guess she had problems breathing," Anzures said. "She was sick."
Anzures said he wonders if this death could have been avoided.
"If the baby was there with her asleep and laying there with her on the couch, they probably would have caught it," he said.
