Kevin Anthony Hunt, 24, Sparks, Nevada
A 24-year-old man was arrested Wednesday night in the Feb. 6 death of a 2-year-old Sparks boy, who was the son of the suspect’s girlfriend, Sparks police said Thursday.
Kevin Anthony Hunt, address unknown, was booked on charges of suspicion of murder and child abuse causing substantial bodily harm on the death of Malakai Dean, police said.
An initial police investigation determined that Malakai might have been playing on or around the playground at Deer Park on Feb. 5. Later that day, the boy stopped breathing at his home on Round Mountain Circle and died early the next day at Northern Nevada Medical Center.
“The facts and circumstances substantiate that he did not suffer this injury in an accident or mishap,” police said in a statement Thursday. “Additionally, the facts and circumstances (substantiate) that Malakai was in the sole care and custody of Kevin Anthony Hunt when he suffered the injury that lead to his death.”
Detectives reported they have no evidence Hunt took Malakai to Deer Park.
Police obtained an arrest warrant for Hunt on Wednesday.
Malakai’s mother is five months pregnant with Hunt’s child.

Police with the help of NHP troopers arrested Kevin Anthony Hunt Wednesday night after stopping his car in the area of 395 and S. Virginia Street.
Hunt is the boyfriend of Malakai Dean's mother Kenesia Dean.
Police originally believed Malakai Dean died after playing in Deer Park on the afternoon of February 5th. Detectives thought the 2-year-old had hit his head while on a slide, but now police believe he was not hurt in an accident, but rather beaten to death by the suspect.
Police believe Malakai was in alone with the suspect, Kevin Hunt, when he died from blunt force trauma to the torso.

Father God,
We beseech You to stop this abuse and murder of the most vulnerable and innocent, to protect Your children, who have been entrusted to our care for proper nurturing and development. Guide and direct the law enforcement community that must investigate these crimes, the court systems which dispense judgement and the penal system officials who incarcerate and guard the perpetrators of these crimes against our children. Provide these members of our community who we depend upon to protect our children with Your discernment in making the proper decisions when dealing with these abusers' past and future. Guide our law makers to create laws with substance that will protect our society from this scourge.

24-year-old Kevin Hunt, who is an active duty combat Marine, is in custody on charges of child abuse with substantial bodily harm, and murder. He is the boyfriend of Kanesia Dean, Malakai's mother.
Patricia Gruhler lives across the street from Malakai’s family. She says when she heard the news Thursday, the first thing she said to her husband was “Malakai is going to have justice.”
Neighbors Malakai Dean livened up their block. They describe him as a happy-go-lucky two-year-old whose bright smile was contagious.
Witnesses say they saw Malakai, his mom, and Hunt having dinner at a Sparks restaurant the night of Malakai’s death. They say he projectile-vomited several times. And that night when Kanesia tried putting Malakai to sleep, she told police he was wincing in pain. Next time she checked on him, he wasn’t breathing.
An autopsy report shows the 2-year-old had internal bleeding, and cuts on several organs including his spleen and bladder. He also had blood in his diaper.

Could Malakai have been saved? Had momma taken him to the hospital, after projectile vomiting? Was it already too late by then?

I wonder too if he could have been saved. I can't imagine he was in very good spirits the whole time. Did she not notice he's demeanor, fussing and wincing, crying even? so very sad, just breaks my heart.
That fucker is one big ass baby killer. I hope and might even pray on it, that he meet his face to his end, projectile vomiting all the while. It makes me so incredibly angry to see a full grown man beat on a wee baby. HE needs a major ass kicking that would leave him unable to shit, talk, walk right ever again.
Malaki, you were a gift, your face a reflection of your mother's. Every waking moment she will be reminded of your missing presence, your light of life. May the heavens open unto you as your brilliance lights the heavens. Rest in peace littlest "Kai" Dean.

I guess this big bad marine forgot all about the "death before dishonor" thing. I don't know of ANYTHING more dishonorable than beating and killing an innocent two year old. I wouldn't be bothered if a few fellow marines got a hold of him and took him apart...piece by piece. Just so there is no doubt, I have the utmost respect for marines and the utmost contempt for baby killers.
It saddens my soul immensely to imagine him lying there alone, suffering and dying, even more if he could have in fact been saved. Poor sweet baby.
When I saw his picture I had to smile though. How could anyone look at that face and not smile? He is cuteness personified. One brute failed to charmed by this little one and now he lies cold and still and forever silent. One brute in moments of madness and rage turned this happy go lucky, smiling little boy into a memory. The whole world should weep each time this happens.

A 24-year-old man was indicted on charges he fatally beat his fiancee’s toddler son soon before they visited the boy’s pregnant mother in the hospital.
Kevin Anthony Hunt was indicted Thursday evening by a Washoe County Grand Jury that charged him with open murder and child abuse causing substantial bodily injury.
. . .
Hunt denies any abuse, according to court records, and blames the boy’s injuries on a fall at a playground. But an autopsy report said the child had lacerations to his spleen, pancreas and intestines. He had a bruise on his bladder, and had injuries to his face. Police said there was no evidence the boy had been taken to the park and his injuries are inconsistent with claims of tumbles at the playground.
. . .
On Feb. 5, Hunt picked Dean up from a local hair salon after the boy’s female relatives were unable to supervise him during their appointments. Police said that during a window of 30 to 40 minutes before Hunt arrived to Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center with Dean to visit his mother, the fatal injuries were inflicted.
Unknown to anyone was that Dean was dying of the injuries while visiting his mother at the hospital, court records show. A nurse had noticed the boy’s facial injuries and offered him some ice. His mother told detectives he seemed lethargic and sleepy during the visit, while relatives at the beauty salon said he left healthy and lively.
About an hour after the hospital visit, Dean, his mother and Hunt went to a restaurant. Dean projectile vomited in the lobby, and then at the dinner table, court records say. At home, he continued to throw up, and was put to bed. Five minutes later he stopped breathing and police were called. He was pronounced dead soon after at the hospital.http://www.rgj.com/article/20100813/NEWS01/100813027/1321/NEWS

Oh how her current Facebook picture breaks my heart. It must be so hard for her... to lose her gorgeous son... and be expecting a baby by this low-life piece of shit. I couldn't imagine how I would feel under those circumstances. She has to feel at least a tiny amount of animosity towards the new baby. I hope for this baby's sake, she received counseling. I wish her FB page wasn't private as I would have liked a little peek at an update of sorts. :dong:

He only had to care for this angel for a short time and in just 30-40 minutes he beat the fuck out of him. If he had said that Dean fell really hard at the playgroup, maybe he could have been saved. At the very least he would have passed with pain relief!!
Imagine the pain and suffering sweet little Dean agonised in, unable to say what this asshole did to him and that he needed help.

Malakai Dean had been running around the Sparks hair salon where his family members were awaiting hair cuts, flirting with staff members, playing with hydraulic chairs and coloring.
His relatives said he was healthy and laughing, and had no signs of injuries or physical distress during that Feb. 5 visit to the Adam and Eve salon.
But within about 20 minutes of his mother’s fiance picking him up from the salon, he was lethargic, had difficulty walking and had scrapes and bruises on his face, according to grand jury transcripts released Thursday. Soon, the boy would be vomiting uncontrollably, and eventually stopped breathing.
. . .
Newly released grand jury transcripts portray Dean as often becoming upset when having to spend time with Hunt. He told his 12-year-old uncle Brenden Barry, who placed him in Hunt’s car following the Feb. 5 salon trip that “Uncle Non, Uncle Non, please don’t leave me. He’s going to hurt me.” Barry said tears were rolling down his face while the boy begged him not to put him in the car.
About 20 minutes later, Hunt took the boy to Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center where his 18-year-old fiancee, Kanesia — Malakai’s mother — was being treated for pregnancy complications. She testified she immediately could tell something was wrong with her son, who had an injury above his eye and had trouble standing.
Kanesia Dean testified that Hunt told her they had just come back from Deer Park where he slipped when trying to go down a slide. The next day her family was taking pictures to send to relatives in England, and she was upset he had the visible injury.
Witnesses said Malakai left the salon with Hunt at about 4:21 p.m., and video surveillance places the pair at the hospital by 4:40 p.m., according to the transcripts.
Dr. Piotr Kubiczek, assistant chief Washoe County Medical Examiner, performed Malikai’s autopsy. He determined the boy died of multiple blunt force injuries to his abdomen, that caused his organs to become cut or crushed against his vertebral column, the transcripts show. The injuries, he said, were fresh, and occurred minutes or hours before he died. It was not known specifically how the injuries were inflicted. Injuries similar to those suffered by Malakai result from a high-speed car accident, Kubiczek said.
Dr. Catherine Wagoner, a pediatrician who serves as the medical director for the county’s social services, testified the injuries would be extremely painful. Symptoms, she said, would be vomiting and lethargy. He would not be able to play and run at a park or at the salon when he suffered those injuries, she said.
“Everytime (Hunt) tried to take Malakai, he didn’t want to go,” Brenden Barry testified. “He always wanted to hold on to one of my family. When (Hunt) said ‘sit down’ he sat there like a long time because (Hunt) ... we didn’t know what (Hunt) did to him. One night my mom said ‘Malakai, did he hurt you?’ (Malakai) put his hands on her lips and said ‘shhh.’”
Kanesia Dean testified that Hunt accused her of “babying” her son too much. When Hunt brought the boy into her hospital room, she said he told her son “now sit there and don’t say anything.”
During an interview with detectives, Hunt insisted the boy fell while losing his footing on the slide. After Det. Jason Woodard told him the boy suffered internal injuries, he said the fall caused the boy to suffer “abdominal injuries” and he put his hand on his own stomach, pinpointing Malakai’s wounds. He said the boy also fell on his knees a few times while running in the grass.
Woodard testified Hunt offered that maybe the boy eating crayons earlier in the day contributed to his death.
. . .
Kanesia Dean testified her son had been born six weeks premature, and that he received constant medical care for the first three weeks of his life. . . .
Whatever he did, he did in the twenty minutes between picking up the boy and taking him to the hospital. I'm thinking it was premeditated. He wanted the competition out of the way when his baby arrived. It's a pity that no one thought to take the boy themselves, since he was terrified of Hunt. Why don't the adults around a child like this take him seriously? If he was going to be too much trouble at the hospital, let Hunt go alone, instead of letting him take the boy. Just how important was it to send a little toddler to his mother's exam?

Oh god. I was getting myself all lathered up to launch into the uncle, and then realised the poor kid was 12. What a horrible thing to live with for the rest of your life.
Poor, poor little kid. Evil, evil motherfucker.
I don't think it was premeditated, as such. I think it was animal instinct. I remember at university reading Dian Fossey's observation that when a new male gorilla took over a group of females, he would often kill the infant gorillas that had been fathered by the previous silverback. Her theory was that this was to free them up for breeding... When you start to look at the correlation between "stepfathers" (or transient penises) and violent deaths in young children... I don't know where I was going with that. Just... meh. Poor sweet kid, trying to find the words to save himself.

A 2-year-old Sparks boy was alone with his mother’s fiancé on Feb, 5, 2010, for roughly 20 minutes.
During that time, the fiancé, Kevin Anthony Hunt, abused Malakai Dean so badly that his abdominal organs were crushed, Deputy District Attorney Luke Prengaman told jurors Tuesday. Malakai died later that night. . . .
But Hunt’s attorney, Dave Houston, told jurors “this is not a who done it, but it’s a medical what done it.”
Houston alluded to the various resuscitation efforts done to the child, whose heart and breathing had stopped hours after Hunt picked him up, as possible means for Malakai’s lacerated spleen and pancreas. Houston added that if Malakai were injured by Hunt, the symptoms would have been worse and more obvious and also said Malakai could have been suffering from a flu his family had endured the week prior. . . .
Prengaman described Malakai’s injuries as “catastrophic,” which caused him to lose a lot of blood from his organs splitting. He also had abrasions on his face, which Hunt said were caused during that 20-minute window when Malakai went down a park slide the wrong way. . . .
After Malakai was taken to the hospital, Hunt said multiple times to Kanesia Dean that “I feel like this is all my fault,” Prengaman said. Prengaman said that Hunt didn’t like the women in the family “babying” Malakai.
On Feb. 5, Hunt took his Dean to the hospital because she was having complications from her pregnancy. Her mother and siblings had taken Malakai to the hair salon where they were getting ready to take family pictures that weekend. Because Malakai was running around the salon, his grandmother called Hunt and asked if he could take the boy.
Prengaman said witnesses recalled Malakai getting upset and not wanting to leave with Hunt. About 20 minutes later, they arrived at the hospital where Dean would see the new abrasion on her son’s face, Prengaman said.
Houston said video surveillance of the two at the hospital don’t show Malakai to be in any distress. He can be seen holding Hunt’s hand.
“… and this is the monster who just crushed his pancreas and spleen,” Houston said.
About 45 minutes later, the trio left the hospital and went to a restaurant for dinner. When the boy was strapped in his car seat Hunt warned him not to cry, Prengaman said. Malakai vomited several times at the restaurant, which prompted them to leave.
Malakai continued to vomit once they got home, Prengaman said. After they put him down to sleep, they noticed he wasn’t breathing and had no pulse. Malakai was later pronounced dead.
During questioning with the police, Prengaman said Hunt told the detective he didn’t know about Malakai’s serious abdominal injuries, and placed his hand on his abdominal area. But Prengaman said Hunt offered the location of the injury before police told him.

I'm sure the reason why the nurse didnt report the facial bruise was becoz its not uncommon for little boys to fall on their faces and bruise themselves. My little guy did it in the church parking lot when we were visiting his grandparents in Ga same age as little Malakai was when he died 2y/o. I don't remember exactly but I think my little man was running round tripped on the asphalt and down he went. Had a scraped up cheek a black eye and it swelled up a bit as well. I stood him up brushed the dirt away and even tho I wanted like hell to pick him up and just fuss all over him I had 2 remember 2 keep calm coz if I freak out he freaks out and that wont solve a thing. His dad n all the girls were fussin over him tho but he didnt cry.
I doubt little Malakai got that bruise from just a trip and fall tho. That big bully Kevin Hunt hurt this sweet baby verbally n physically. His mama was too young and naive to know a bully from a booger and thats why Kevin chose her to be with. So he could have someone to manipulate and control. But unfortunately 2y/o boys wills are not easily broken they are meant to break the rules get into shit wreak havoc be little terrors. Its what they do. You cant stop that. Well you can but like Mr. Hunt here has shown us you gotta beat them to death to do it.
I know they say when one life ends another begins but I sincerely doubt the death of a child at the hands of a monster fits the bill. I feel so bad for Malakai's mom everyday looking at her new child and knowing that the babies father callously beat her first born to death. How do you live with such an awful truth?

An aunt, Alicia Barry, testified Monday that her family brought Malakai to the hair salon, where he was happy, playing and running around. She said the relatives were having a hard time getting Malakai to settle down, so Hunt was called to pick him up.
. . .
Barry, who lived in Sparks with Dean, their mother and siblings and the boy, testified that as soon as Malakai saw Hunt pull up to the salon, he became upset and didn’t want to go.
During an argument between attorneys outside of the presence of the jury, prosecutor Luke Prengaman said grand jury transcripts show Berry testified that Malakai said he didn’t want to go with Hunt because “he’ll hurt me.”
Barry said Monday he became whiny and was “screaming his head off” when she placed him in a car seat in Hunt’s car.
She said that Hunt always became upset when Malakai cried and would tell him “men don’t cry” and “suck it up and be a man.” Barry also said that Hunt didn’t like it when the women in the home babied Malakai.
Michael Brown, of Texas, was incarcerated with Hunt at Washoe County Jail. He testified Monday that Hunt told him “he hit the baby in the stomach, that he reached around (in the car) and hit him in the stomach.”
Hunt claimed that Malakai received abrasions to his face after falling the wrong way down a park slide during the 20 minutes it took him to drive from the beauty salon to the hospital where Dean was recovering.
http://www.rgj.com/article/20120515/NEWS01/305150030/Testimony-continues-Sparks-2-year-old-s-death?nclick_check=1
The abrasions to his face came from sliding down a slide during the twenty minutes it to get to the hospital? Somewhere in the car, there's a slide? Cause it sounds like that's the idea.
I can believe that Hunt hit him in the stomach. More likely than the slide, and it seems very likely that Malakai, upon being hit, lost his breath, clawed or turned to throw himself away from Hunt when he did catch his breath, and even may have been trying to hide his face or muffle his own cries.

Mistrial Declared in Sparks Toddler Death Case
RENO, Nev. (AP) - A judge has declared a mistrial after jurors
deliberating charges against a man charged in the death of a Sparks
toddler said they are deadlocked on a verdict.
Washoe District Judge Steven Kosach declared a mistrial Tuesday after jurors who had been deliberating for three weeks were unable to reach a verdict in the case against 23-year-old Kevin Anthony Hunt.
Hunt is accused of fatally injuring Malakai Dean when he was alone with the boy for a brief time in February 2010. He was charged with child abuse causing death.
Hunt's attorneys denied that the boy died of child abuse-related injuries.
Kosach scheduled a June 6 hearing to set a new trial date.

Baby was upset undoubtedly because he didn't want to go with this asswipe. Crying in protest he was punched in the gut and fatally injured.
The new jury should determine that this loathsome POS should die by the same means. Get in line folks, punch the bitch in the gut time.

Two weeks after a 25-year-old man was freed on bail after jurors failed to reach a verdict on charges that he killed his former fiancee’s toddler, he was back in jail, accused of stalking her. . . .
Dean gave birth to Hunt’s child in May 2010, about four months after Malakai’s death in Sparks. . . .
Soon after Malakai’s death, Dean was granted a protection order against Hunt. Records show the order was recently extended following his latest arrest.
Authorities said Hunt’s alleged stalking included calling Dean following his jail release July 2. He was arrested two weeks later in a Sparks shopping center parking lot after police said he arranged to meet her there. Records show that on July 13, Hunt had filed for visitation and custody rights to their child.http://www.rgj.com/article/20120728/NEWS01/307280055/Man-accused-Sparks-killing-fiancee-s-child-back-jail-stalking-accusation?nclick_check=1
