Yale: Student's Abortion-Art Is Hoax
Friday, Apr. 18, 2008 By AP/PAT EATON-ROBB

(HARTFORD, Conn.) - The story about Aliza Shvarts' project, published Thursday in the Yale Daily News, swept across blogs and media outlets — including the Drudge Report, Fox News and The Washington Post — before Yale issued a statement saying it investigated and found it all to be a hoax that was Shvarts' idea of elaborate "performance art."

Shvarts told the student paper that she planned to display a work that consisted of a cube lined with plastic sheets with a blood—and—petroleum—jelly mixture in between, onto which she would project video footage of herself "experiencing miscarriages in her bathroom tub."

The newspaper's account detailed "a nine—month process during which (Shvarts) artificially inseminated herself 'as often as possible' while periodically taking abortifacient drugs to induce miscarriages."

Shvarts told the paper her goal was to spark conversation and debate on the relationship between art and the human body.

Groups both for and against abortion rights expressed outrage over the affair.

Ted Miller, a spokesman for NARAL Pro—Choice America, called the concept offensive and "not a constructive addition to the debate over reproductive rights."

Peter Wolfgang, executive director of the Family Institute of Connecticut, an anti—abortion group, said his anger was not mitigated by the fact that Shvarts was never pregnant.

"I'm astounded by this woman's callousness," he said. "There are thousands of women in this country who are dealing with the pain of having had an abortion, with the trauma of having suffered a miscarriage. For her to make light of that for her own purposes is just beyond words."

This is so bizarre, I don't even know what to say about it. But, I've got questions!

Is she an artist bravely pushing the envelope, or is she a callous bitch?

Are you personally offended by her proposed project, or the fact that it was all a ruse?

Do you find it humorous that she managed to piss off both pro and anti-abortion groups, like I do?

Okay.......Go.

Yawn...

I hate this type of "shock artists", its not that it ofends me(tho I can see the position of both pros and antis on this one) there was a place for that kind of stuff in older more represed days where what they did could cause real shock, this days you can find more shocking stuff with two clicks of a mouse.

What anoys me, Its the fact most of the shit they do is lame, no longer shocking for anyone thats not a prude and requires no skills whatsoever.

I don't know...I was a bit shocked. I mean, purposefully impregnating yourself for the specific purpose of multiple abortions so that you can use that blood for art? Pretty hardcore. Maybe I've got a female bias, though.

Still, I'm just sort of...baffled. And, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised by how casually Yale's spokeswoman talks about it.

Neither. Just somebody looking to make a name for themselves so that they can do the whole "starving artist" thing without the actual starving.

Since I respect the right to abortion even nine months in, I am not at all offended by the proposed project. And while it was a dumb ruse, it fails to offend me. I'd have been much more impressed were it legitimate.

Do you find it humorous that she managed to piss off both pro and anti-abortion groups, like I do?

Not humorous, though I do find both groups to be overrun by idiots, so I do love to see them get worked up over nothing.

I think she is a genius and a tard. Is it possible to be both?

Seriously, the health implications of what she had proposed should have had people suspicious to begin with.

If she was willing to actually put her body through all that in the name of "art," hell she deserved whatever came with it.
