Danielle Brown's driver's license and cell phone were found last weekend on a roadside in Beachton, Ga., just across the state line, Leon County Sheriff Larry Campbell said. But there has been no sight of the 21-year-old Tallahassee woman, who has been missing since Feb. 5.
Campbell held a news conference Monday where he said more than 100 law-enforcement officers and volunteers searched for Brown over the weekend.
A "random citizen" not affiliated with the search found the driver's license and a volunteer with the Tallahassee Fire Department found the cell phone in close proximity to the license on Old Beachton Road.
Thomas County Sheriff R. Carlton Powell said that the license "was not a whole driver's license. It was a partial part of it but it was enough to identify (Brown)."
Brown's ex-boyfriend, 35-year-old Elijah James, is facing charges of grand theft auto and arson. He remains in the Leon County Jail.
In other new developments, Campbell said James was seen driving alone in the Leon County community of Bradfordville at about 5:30 a.m. on Feb. 6. He stopped at a convenience store where he bought a case of beer. Later that day, he was seen driving Brown's car in Pavo, Ga., about 50 miles from Bradfordville.
During the news conference, Campbell was asked by a journalist with a lengthy beard: What are the odds that Brown is still alive?
"About as good that you're going to shave this afternoon," Campbell said. Then Campbell added, "The longer it takes that there's no contact with anybody, the more bleak it appears."
Brown was known to call family members every day, Campbell said. She spoke with a friend on Feb. 5 about 11:35 p.m. on her cell phone.
Brown told the friend that she was dropping James off at his mother's property on 7080 King Post Way in eastern Leon County. Campbell said it's important to note that Brown and James were arguing during that time.
On Feb. 8, Brown's car was found at the Pavo city dump with the license plate and at least one vehicle identification number removed. The car had been doused with accelerant to burn the inside of the car, Pavo Police Chief Sydney Turner said. Investigators were able to track the car to Brown from a serial number in the trunk.
"While James has been charged with theft and arson of Brown's vehicle, the question of where Danielle is and what happened to her remains under investigation," Campbell said.
Brown's family was in the lobby of the Leon County Sheriff's Office during the news conference. Brown's sister, Nicole Sheffield, 27, later answered questions. She said the family is "not well."
"We're just dealing moment by moment, day by day," she said.
She added her parents are "doing the best they can."
She encourages anyone who may know details to come forward.
"It could only help toward the ultimate goal of finding my sister," she said.
Deputies plan to expand the search to northeast Leon County and south Georgia today, LCSO spokesman Sgt. Tony Drzewiecki said.
"James' stealing Danielle's vehicle and setting it on fire in Georgia lead us to suspect that he may also be involved with her disappearance," Campbell said. "You do not necessarily have to find a body to be able to charge with criminal homicide."

I worked with this girls step mother for 10 years. I have not spoken to her since this happened. Danielle was always a handful and a troubled teen. I sure hope they get some answers soon.

According to arrest papers, Brown’s friend called her at about 11:35 p.m. that same night. The friend said Brown and James were arguing and said Brown was taking James to his mother’s home.

Previous reports had James driving Brown’s car alone in Pavo, Ga. on Feb. 6 and driving in the Leon County community of Bradfordville at about 5:30 a.m. that same morning, when he stopped at a convenience store to buy a case of beer.

Considered a person of interest in the case, James is currently being held at the Leon County Jail on charges of grand theft auto and arson.

The search at the landfill in Thomasville focused on an area a half acre in size and 30-feet deep. Crews were looking for evidence, not Brown, said Lt. Steven Jones, a spokesman for the Thomas County Sheriff’s Office.

Campbell was asked by a journalist with a lengthy beard

are physical descriptions of people asking questions the norm now?
That's just...odd.

The lengthy beard was relevant to the answer he got from the detective on the case. If he was clean shaven we would all know that it was highly likely that he would be shaving in the next 24 hours........

Update 5:30 p.m. 2-19
Two days of sifting through garbage may have paid off as search crews hunt for clues in the disappearance of Danielle Brown.
The 21- year- old was last seen in the company of her ex-boyfriend Elijah James.
There's been no sign of Brown since February 5th, but Friday search crews may have found a critical clue.
It's a daunting task. A pile of trash 30 feet tall and one acre wide.
Search crews are looking for any sign of Danielle Brown.
From the plates off her car to her high heel sneakers.
Why here?
They found Brown's cell phone and license on Old Beachton Road and the dumpsters on the corner are dumped here.
"There were two dumpsters located there. And we're now trying to rule out or see if something was put in those two dumpsters," said Thomas County Sheriff's Office Spokesman Steve Jones.
At about 11:30 Friday morning, the raking and sifting suddenly stopped.
Someone found a Coach bag with a white handle.
Investigators pulled out some papers and then asked us to stop filming.
Danielle Brown was carrying a Coach bag the night she disappeared.
Investigators will not say whether this is it.
"Any items and all items that have been or will be found in the search of the landfill are being sent to the Leon County Sheriff's Office and then forwarded to the FDLE crime lab. Until we get these results back, we have no way of knowing what we found."
The search has wrapped up for Friday, and investigators say they are done searching the landfill.

Officials don't know yet it if it was hers.
We will bring you more information as soon as it becomes available.

UPDATED 2.18.10 4:50pm
The search for a missing Tallahassee woman already spans two counties in two states, and now it may stretch to the east too.
Deputies have just reported that person of interest Elijah James may have been spotted in Jefferson County the night Danielle Brown disappeared and may have been spotted there again the next day.
LCSO detectives say James may have been in Wacissa and Waukeenah - possibly in Brown's silver Buick - just hours after Brown's last known phone call from a friend. They want to hear from anyone who may have seen him Saturday between the hours of 12:30am and 5am or Sunday between 8am and 8pm.
If you saw James in that area, call Crime Stoppers at 850-574-TIPS.

Investigators spent most of the last two days at a plantation near the Florida/Georgia border, following a tip that they hoped would lead them to the body of Danielle Brown, a Tallahassee woman who went missing in 2010.

Police began investigating the area, a 400-sqaure-foot plot located off Highway 59, on Thursday. After a two-day search, Lt. James McQuaig, spokesman for the Leon County Sheriff's office, said police had no luck.

McQuaig said nothing was found in the search and police will continue to investigate Brown's disappearance elsewhere.

The search for Brown, who was 21 when she went missing, has been ongoing since late February 2010.

"The information that we received Thursday led us to what we believe could be a possible burial site," McQuaig said.

Capt. Robert Swearingen, Criminal Investigations Bureau commander for LCSO, said investigators went to the property with three cadaver dogs, which led police to the site.

Police completed the search late Friday afternoon and were not able to recover a body or any new information that would help find Brown.
[...]

Assistant State Attorney Jack Campbell, the lead prosecutor in the capital murder case against Brown's former boyfriend, Elijah James, said tips about the possible location of Brown's body have come in and been investigated since her disappearance.
[...]

Because it is still an on-going investigation, Swearingen could not say exactly what kind of tip led police to the plantation, but he did say "the information was enough that we thought it would merit coming out and making the effort."

Don't mean to be a downer here, but with all the searches and what's been found so far, it all just screams that she's no longer alive. With an ex-boyfriend in the mix, it was probably a case of "if I can't have her, nobody will." I'd be really surprised if she just showed up unharmed at this point, no matter if she was a handful or not.
