Two Bagley, Minn., brothers accused of killing their sister in 1998 appeared in court Monday.

During an uneventful hearing, Todd and Troy Martin declined to have the charges against them read aloud, and another hearing, at which they may enter pleas, was set for March 8, Clearwater County Attorney Jeanine Brand said.

The brothers are each charged with aiding and abetting manslaughter in the second degree, concealing evidence and being an accomplice after the fact. If convicted on all three charges, they each face a maximum sentence of 16 years in prison.

Todd Martin originally reported his sister, 31-year-old Leisa Martin, missing on the evening of Oct. 28, 1998. He told authorities he last saw his sister walk away from their rural Bagley home early that morning. Three days later, hunters found Leisa Martin’s body near Roy Lake in Mahnomen County, which abuts Clearwater County.

The case remained open until a break came last month when Todd Martin was arrested for drunken driving and assaulting a deputy. With a blood-alcohol level of 0.17 percent he told officers at the Clearwater County Law Enforcement Center that he and his brother were arguing with their sister in the early morning hours of Oct. 28, 1998, and restrained her, causing her to pass out, authorities reported.
