If you can’t beat ’em, you can at least try to join ’em.

Unless that’s illegal, too.

Moon Township police have charged an Emsworth man with pretending to be an employee at the township’s Kmart store so he could steal merchandise to feed a drug habit.

Police said they were contacted by store employees around 5:35 a.m. Monday about a man wearing a Kmart uniform and pretending to be an employee. The workers at the store said they believed the man had stolen from the store before.

When police arrived, the man had moved from the store’s clothing section to an employees-only section in the back of the store. After searching the area, officers found Charles Tankersley, 34, in a stall in the men’s bathroom.

Police said in a court document that Tankersley was wearing a red Kmart hat and shirt, and was carrying a pair of pliers and several utility knives in his pockets. While he initially told police he was “just helping out at the store,” he admitted after questioning that he was not an employee and had planned to use the tools to remove anti-theft devices from merchandise.

The affidavit also said Tankersley told officers that he had a heroin addiction that cost him $100 a day; he supported the habit by stealing merchandise from Pittsburgh-area stores.

Seems to me that pretending to have a job at a higher end store would pay better.

Hell, he was probably a better employee than the people who actually work there!
