Carthage Missouri
Police: Nearly 100 officers searching for missing Carthage boy
Carthage police Chief Greg Dagnan, in a press conference this afternoon, told members of the media that the abduction of a Carthage boy does not appear to be a custody issue of any sort and officials are treating it as an abduction by a stranger.
As many as 100 officers, including those from the FBI, members of the Missouri Highway Patrol and numerous local officers, are continuing their search this afternoon for Eddie Salazar, an eight-month old Carthage child who was reportedly abducted from his home at 227 E. Mound St. in Carthage late Thursday night.
“We are working very hard and doing everything we can to find this child,” said Carthage Police Chief Greg Dagnan.
Dagnan, during the press conference, said the names of the parents are not being released yet.
“They are clearly upset right now, going through a lot,” he said.
Dagnan said the initial call came in at 11:04 p.m. Thursday and an Amber Alert was issued within an hour or so.
A Highway Patrol spokesman said the child was dressed only in a blue “onesy” and there is extreme concern about the child’s exposure to the weather conditions today.
Dagnan said information provided by the father indicates that one or two males in dark clothing and ski-type masks forced their way into the front door and a struggle ensued in which the father was knocked unconscious briefly. The father was the only adult home at the time; the other was working.
Dagnan earlier had said at least one weapon, a knife, was displayed.
“We are investigating any connections friends or family members may have that might explain what happened,” Dagnan said at the press conference.
Law enforcement already has searched a 20-block area around the home as well as Spring River and Kellogg Lake in Carthage.
“Searches are still continuing in logical areas where the child might have been left,” he said.
Anyone with information should contact the Carthage Police Department at 237-7200.

This is less 10 than miles from where I live and Chief Dagnan used to be a professor in the Criminal Justice Department at the university that I attend.
I have a feeling the whole story is a sham and I hate to say it. If there is something screwy I think Dagnan will spot it out with some help from the Feds. I hear there are at least 30 agents in town.
My local paper and stations are reporting on this big time so I will try to keep you all posted.
In the meantime here is the baby:

CARTHAGE, Mo. –
Two masked men broke into a southwestern Missouri home and took an 8-month-old child Thursday evening after assaulting the boy's father, police say.
The child, Eddie Salazar, was taken from his home around 11 p.m. Thursday.
Carthage Police Chief Greg Dagnan says the suspects entered the house in the 200 block of East Mound Street armed with knives and tried to kidnap Eddie before his father woke up.
There was a struggle between the father and the suspects. The father was knocked unconscious, the house was ransacked and the child was taken, Dagnan said.
Dagnan said in a news conference Friday afternoon that the mother was not home at the time of the invasion. He added that there was another child at the home during the incident, but the child was not injured.
The suspects are described as two men wearing ski masks and black clothing.
Eddie Salazar is Hispanic, between 2 and 3-feet-tall, weighs about 20 pounds and has black hair and brown eyes. He has a birthmark in the shape of a lung on his right bicep and he was last wearing a blue short sleeve body suit with white socks.
Dagnan said the boy's parents are cooperating with the investigation, but with such little information available about the suspects and no information about a possible vehicle, there is little to work with as far as developing leads into the boy's whereabouts.
The child may still be in the area, according to Dagnan. As of Friday afternoon, police are following several leads.
Anyone with information should call the Carthage Police Department at (417) 237-7200 or 911 immediately.

Either the dad was dealing with unsavory people who killed his son or he (unfortunately) alone did something to kill his son.

The latest thing I have seen is that they are calling it a night and will resume early tomorrow.
I'm sure that there will be some officers/agents/investigators working it over night. They are already looking at bodies of water in the area and things of that nature.
I think if we have a feeling that this will come to no good end then the investigators are probably on the same track.
I just can't fathom what makes people do these kinds of things.

February 6th, 2010, 02:44 AM
Ok our reporters suck and need to learn the lingo.
They are following tips thru the night and the canvassing may resume but they covered 20 blocks surrounding the home today. And I read a report that they surveyed local bodies of water. They didn't find anything that they are talking about but now they are reporting that no neighbors reprted hearing anything.
Carthage is an old town and dates back to before the Civil War. It is small and the houses in that part of town are close together, so I believe that if there was anything to report some one would have reported it. This type of thing is REALLY rare around here. In fact a stranger abduction is pretty rare ANYWHERE.
They still are not releasing the parents names and I read that they are only semi-fluent in English.
We will see what happens tomorrow and here is a link to the latest story in the paper:

Nothing really new this morning but the search continues.
The parents are co-operating with the authorities and the search has been throughout the four state area.
It is so cold outside and I just can't figure what 2 masked men would want with an 8 month old baby considering they didn't leave a ransom note.
The details are still sounding hinkey to me. It was one man or two, no one heard anything and there is no suspect vehicle description.
I am going to pray really hard and then throw myself into some work because this is really bothering me.

There is something not right about this case. First the local media here is pathetic to say the least, 3' high 8 month old??? and on the local news the report kept saying that the child was in a "on zee" . there is talk among the local emergency services that they are looking at the parents as suspects. apparently the father calling to report the crime started off with 'someone robbed my house'... if my child were taken I wouldn't be thinkin of the house, would you??? This morning the search has been extended to Kafir road North of Carthage because of a tip to law enforcement. I have the feeling that they are looking for a body... sad and worriesome. Things like this should not happen to innocent children!!!

thanks badfish, I live in Carthage and I have a pretty good inside track on things that happen, you are right that most of us don't know all the crap that happens right here in our own backyard. Latest in the news is that daddy has a criminal record for stalking and robbery etc. and that he has been arrested for filing a false police report. My sources eluded to the fact that it wasn't an abduction and that possibly the father had more to do with the baby disappearing, I hope to God that they find him alive and unharmed but my fear is that he has been dumped somewhere around here.

Carthage, Missouri - The body of a young child, believed to be that of a missing 8-month old boy, has been pulled from the Spring River near Joplin today, authorities say.
Jasper County Sheriff Archie Dunn says the body was found in the Spring River in an area known as Forest Mill, which is two miles south of 96 Highway east of Carthage. An autopsy will be performed to positively identify the child and determine how he died.
Sheriff Dunn says deputies started searching the area Friday night after receiving information from the child's father.
Eddie Salazar, 28, is charged with filing a false police report. He is being held on $100,000 bond, said
Cathage Police Chief Greg Dagnan, during a news conference Saturday afternoon.

The body of 8-month-old Eddie Salazar Jr. was found in Spring River near Carthage on Saturday and police said the father has been charged with falsifying a police report.
[...]
Police said Salazar told investigators one name of an individual in the kidnapping who was found to have a credible alibi. Police said other details from Eddie Salazar were also found to be false.
Yadira Aguilar, the boy's mother, is cooperating to the investigation, police said. Police said the mother was not at the house during the time the alleged false report was made.

I got a call on my way home from dinner tonight about Baby Eddie.
All I could say was FUCK!!!!
The story was so bad that we could spot it from all over the country here on the internet and we really do have some sharp investigators around here. I can't believe the sperm donor thought he could get away with it.
I wanted so much for this baby to be ok and I was so worried about him being cold. I guess he probably didn't feel the cold because I think this sperm donor had already killed him before he took him to the river. I'm sure it was one of the common causes like head trauma, suffocation, or perhaps left alone in the bath tub that was the real cause of death. Maybe even SBS.
Ah, God!
I am very glad you found us, 10der, and I hope you stick around with us. It is nice to have someone else here from the area.
Salazar Sr.'s record:
Father of missing Carthage child has criminal history
The father of the missing 8-month-old baby in Carthage has a criminal history that includes stalking and robbery, according to Missouri court records.
Eddie Salazar, 29, has, over the years, either been charged with or pleaded guilty to:
- A felony charge of first-degree property damage in 2000.
- A misdemeanor charge of stalking in 2001.
- A felony charge of second-degree robbery in 2001.
- Misdemeanor charges involving driving while intoxicated and driving with a revoked license
Salazar on Friday was charged with filing a false police report in the case of the missing child

I could just scream or puke or something. :dong:

and given us gifts and talents with which to serve You.
We thank You for Baby Eddie ,
the short time that he graced this earth
Your light that was in him,
Your love that brightened his eyes.
Almighty God,
You love everything You have made
and judge us with infinite mercy and justice.
We rejoice in Your promises of pardon, joy and peace
to all those who love You.
In Your mercy turn the darkness of death into the dawn of new life,
and the sorrow of parting into the joy of heaven;
Now give us strength and courage
to leave him in Your care,
confident in Your promise of eternal life.
Give us understanding and allow us to witness to Your omnipotent justice. Amen

The Missouri Water Patrol found the body of a baby, pinned against a partially submerged tree in the Spring River, around 3 p.m. Saturday. Investigators say it likely was 8-month-old Eddie Salazar Jr., the boy from Carthage whose disappearance prompted an Amber Alert late Thursday.
"The tip we got where the baby would likely be, the baby was actually about .6 miles downstream from that location," Carthage Police Chief Greg Dagnan said Saturday.
[...]
Investigators say Salazar changed his story from masked men stealing his baby to giving them the name of a suspect.
"After an extremely thorough investigation of this person, I am confident that he is not involved," Dagnan said.
Investigators say Salazar admitted he was not truthful.
"At this point, it does appear that (Salazar Sr.) was in the area, in a vehicle, that night," he said.

FFS this big eared baboon probably got the idea of how to get rid of Eddie from hearing the story about baby Aveion....only his limited intellect prevented him from realizing that the dumb fuck in the Aveion case didn't get away with it either.
The idea of this beautiful little baby being found in an ice cold river jammed up against a tree is doing my head in. He is the very picture of innocence and sweetness and those big beautiful eyes of his just speak to my soul. Obviously the animal who hurt him does not have a soul otherwise this would not have happened.

CARTHAGE, Mo. — For the town of Carthage, grief has become the universal language in the wake of the death of 8-month-old Eddie Salazar Jr.
“When you get a case that starts out like this, and everybody is looking for the child, I really think people get attached to the child,” said Carthage police Chief Greg Dagnan. “And then when you discover that the child is dead, it makes a really big impact on the community. For our community it’s an extremely significant event and anywhere you go it’s the topic. It’s a tragedy.”[...]
[...]Salazar Sr., 29, has been designated by authorities as the “only” suspect in an investigation of the death, police have said.
Baby Eddie was the biological son of Salazar and Yadira Aguilar.
More than 100 members of the town’s Hispanic community attended the baby’s funeral services at Ullmer Funeral Home in Carthage on Saturday afternoon. Rich voices joined in a Spanish version of the hymn “When We All Get to Heaven,” accompanied by Pastor Elario Andrade on guitar.
Visitors wept as they passed the child’s baby-blue casket, which the family left open during the services. A family member who declined to be interviewed told The Joplin Globe that the decision to leave the casket open was made by the family.
The funeral services were conducted in Spanish, with Andrade and Pastor Wilfred Portillo officiating.
Dozens of family and friends attended the boy’s graveside services at Park Cemetery, where silver heart-shaped balloons were released at the grave. Several family members also took turns pitching shovelfuls of earth into the grave, as a way of paying their respects and honoring their dead.
Salazar Sr. pleaded not guilty to charges of filing a false police report during an arraignment in Jasper County Associate Circuit Court on Thursday. He remains in custody at the Jasper County Jail on a $100,000 bond.
The defendant was appointed Maleia Cheney, a public defender, to represent him, and a hearing is set for March 3 for his next court appearance on the misdemeanor offense.
Authorities continue to decline to comment on whether the father provided any other explanation of what happened to the baby or how his body wound up in the river. Investigators have said the mother was at work at the time and is not a suspect in the baby’s death.
Dagnan said police are still working some leads in the case, but had no new developments to report as of Saturday. No additional charges are expected to be filed against the father until authorities receive an autopsy report later this week.
The investigation is certainly not over,” he said. “The big thing is we’re still waiting for the autopsy results.”

I am sure everyone will be shocked <sarcasm> to hear that Baby Eddie died from blunt force to the head.
A second-degree murder charge is being filed today against Eddie Salazar Sr., according to Jasper County prosecutor Dean Dankelson.
Dankelson said physical evidence and statements made by the father indicate he was responsible for the child’s death. The death occurred around 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, when the child was in the sole custody of his father. The child apparently died from blunt head trauma, according to autopsy results.
“I believe the child was dead before he ever went into the river,” Dankelson said.
The autopsy also indicated other bone fractures and a skull fracture, which authorities believe was inflicted that night.[...]
The baby’s body was discovered by searchers on Feb. 7 in Spring River, a half-mile downstream from a bridge on County Road 85, east of Carthage.

Carthage baby’s father bound over for trial
Defendant in fatal car chase also waives preliminary hearing
By Jeff Lehr

A Carthage father accused of killing his infant son [...]waived their rights to preliminary hearings Wednesday in Jasper County Circuit Court.
Associate Circuit Judge Richard Copeland ordered Eddie A. Salazar, 29, bound over for trial on a charge of second-degree murder after he waived his hearing.[...]
An autopsy determined that the baby died of blunt-force trauma to the head. The medical examiner detected a skull fracture and other bone fractures, which investigators have declined to specify. Authorities also have yet to say how the fatal injury was inflicted.
A preliminary hearing might have provided some answers to those questions. But the defendant waived the hearing, most likely leaving such evidentiary matters to be hashed out in the discovery steps leading up to trial.
The judge set March 29 for the father’s first appearance in a trial division of the court.

This article combines 2 cases so I took out the bits about the idiot that tried to run from the cops and got in a wreck that killed the 18 year old girl who was in the car with him.
I guess it was Take-An-Asshole-To-Court Day here today.
If time allows I am going to try to go to the trial when it comes up.

Salazar trial opens
Defense says baby’s death was accidental
http://i40.tinypic.com/68g13q.jpg
JOPLIN, Mo. — A Jasper County jury will be asked to decide whether the Carthage father of an 8-month-old boy should be convicted of second-degree murder or acquitted of an accident in the baby’s 2010 death.
Trial opened Monday in Jasper County Circuit Court in Joplin for Eddie Salazar Sr., 31, in the Feb. 4, 2010, death of infant Eddie Salazar Jr.
Prosecutor Dean Dankelson told jurors Monday afternoon in opening statements that Salazar gave investigators four different stories as to what happened to the baby after first calling 9-1-1 shortly after 11 p.m. saying he had fended off a home invasion by two men and that one of his children was missing.
Dankelson played the tape recording of that call in which Salazar in a calm voice told a dispatcher: “Someone broke into my house while I was asleep. I can’t find my little son.”
Salazar first told the dispatcher he was asleep on the couch when two men broke in and assaulted him. He must have been knocked unconscious, he said, because “I don’t know what happened.”
Officers who went to his house found furniture topped and an overturned crib where the baby was said to have been put to bed that night. Salazar had scratches on his face and back.
Investigators noted his demeanor, the prosecutor said: “He was coherent. He was not crying. He did not offer to look for the child.”
Officers spoke with Salazar at length over the next 24 hours before Salazar admitted there was no intrusion and abduction. He then told investigators that the baby and his girlfriend’s toddler son were playing on a couch, and that the baby fell off and hit his head. Salazar said he comforted the boy, changed his diaper, and put him to bed but found later the baby was not breathing. He said he loaded the children in the car and drove out into the country, ended up at Spring River, where he laid the boy in the woods. When he came home, he was upset, and kicked in the door and toppled the furniture in disappointment.
He gave authorities at least two more versions of his trip to the river. In the last version, he said he threw the boy’s body off the bridge.
More than 36 hours passed when a law enforcement officer found the baby’s body snagged in a tree floating in the freezing river.
The cause of death was ruled as blunt force trauma to the head. A medical examiner reported that the infant suffered three fractures to the back of the head. He finally admitted to officers that the boys had been playing, the baby started crying, and that he had become frustrated and shook the baby. He told investigators the baby’s head was hit as he shook him.
[...]
Salazar eventually admitted he had not told the true story of the boy’s death. “He didn’t think anybody was going to believe him,” Maples told the jury. “He was scared.
“He explained that yes, he had become frustrated with little Eddie Jr. He was holding him and trying to comfort him, and then he shook him. But this is not a shaken-baby case.”
Salazar denied throwing the baby, but finally told investigators that he was shaking the boy, realized he should not have been shaking him, loosened his grip and the baby flew out of his hands and hit the floor, covered in ceramic tile.
Maples said the jury will hear Salazar’s tearful admission and his denials that he threw the boy to floor in anger. There will be testimony that the injuries the baby suffered were consistent with a fall to the floor, to the hard floor, Maples said. He said he will ask the jury to reject a conviction of second-degree murder .http://www.joplinglobe.com/topstories/x1690516062/Salazar-trial-opens

Dad found guilty of 2nd-degree murder in death of 8-month-old son
Carthage man found guilty in death of 8-month-old son
Salazar sentencing scheduled for April 30
Jasper County Circuit Court jury on Wednesday in Joplin found Eddie Salazar Sr., of Carthage, guilty of second-degree murder in the death of his 8-month-old son.
The jury deliberated for four hours before returning the verdict, and Circuit Judge Gayle Crane set sentencing for April 30. Public defender Larry Maples, who represented Salazar, said a new trial would be sought.
Dean Dankelson, county prosecutor, said he was pleased with the verdict.
“This represents a lot of hard work that started the moment law enforcement got the 911 call,” he said.
When Salazar first called authorities on Feb. 4, 2010, he said his child was abducted by two masked intruders, triggering a massive search led by Carthage officers. Carthage police Chief Greg Dagnan and Randee Kaiser, assistant chief, on Wednesday also noted the work that had gone into the case. Dagnan said the search was especially difficult for officers “because we were out looking as hard as we could because we thought we could find the baby alive.”
The body was found in Spring River about 36 hours after the father made the report.
Maples called no witnesses for the defense, including Salazar, 31, after the prosecution ended its case Wednesday morning.
Final testimony focused on the extent of injuries to the child and was offered by Ariel Goldschmidt, a pathologist who examined the body and determined the cause of death to be blunt force trauma to the head.

Updated March 14, 2012 at 5:25 PM CST by A Carthage, Missouri man is found guilty of second degree murder for the death of his eight month old son.
During today's hearing in the murder trial of Eddie Salazar Senior, a forensic pathologist was brought in from Cook County, Illinois.
The pathologist said eight month old Eddie Salazar Junior died of blunt head trauma. Medical examiners noted bleeding from Eddie Junior's scalp, three skull fractures on the back of the head, brain swelling, and bleeding inside the head.
Salazar Senior said in a taped confession that he picked up his baby and shook him to stop crying. He also says the child "slipped" out of his hands, falling to a hard ceramic tile floor, and hitting his hard "hard".
However, the forensic pathologist says it would've been a very hard fall to cause the type of injuries.
Prosecutors contend the father was mad and threw his son to the floor.
Prosecutors also say Salazar Senior lied to police four different times concerning how his baby was killed and also where he disposed of the baby.
Salazar is charged with second degree murder which carries 10 to 30 years in prison.
His defense claims Salazar never intended to kill his son, and that there was no murder.
