Coming Soon (http://www.comingsoon.net) Plot Summary: The only demons in room 1408 are those within you. Renowned horror novelist Mike Enslin (Cusack) only believes what he can see with his own two eyes. After a string of bestsellers discrediting paranormal events in the most infamous haunted houses and graveyards around the world, he scoffs at the concept of an afterlife. Enslin's phantom-free run of long and lonely nights is about to change forever when he checks into suite 1408 of the notorious Dolphin Hotel for his latest project, "Ten Nights in Haunted Hotel Rooms." Defying the warnings of the hotel manager (Jackson), the author is the first person in years to stay in the reputedly haunted room. Another bestseller may be iminent, but like all Stephen King heroes, Enslin must go from skeptic to true believer – and ultimately survive the night.

One of my favorite King short stories. I am really looking forward to this one, though they seemed to have missed the point of the story entirely by the looks of the trailer.
I'm actually surprised that this one hasn't gotten an overwhelming amount of bad reviews like most of his film adaptations do. Makes all the more excited.

I saw this tonight and enjoyed it (No Mist trailer though... I had my fingers crossed). I will gather some thoughts and post something substantial tomorrow or Wednesday.

Saw this the other night...

The atmosphere and tension was very genuine, all without any overload on gore. The majority of the people in the theatre were actually screaming at certain parts, which is great considering that hasn't happened at any horror movie I've seen since... well, can't remember the last one actually. For this part, the film gets high marks.

The acting was pretty great too. Cusack, though, falters a little bit and overacts a few times to the point of camp. Though, he is consistently good throughout. Jackson was great as the hotel manager. There is one line where he talks about the deaths not printed in the paper and I thought, "snake bites".

The film has some great style, unlike most other lifeless King adaptations (I'm looking at you Mick Garris). Great shots throughout, very listless.

My second favorite horror of the year, considering I've only enjoyed three. :)

8/10

I saw it this afternoon. It was a good movie to be certain, but I was dissapointed. The film dragged in parts, as often happens with King's writing itself, which was unfortunate. And there wasn't enough Samuel L Jackson in it either. As far as the fear factor, that too was lacking. I'd give it a 7/10 or so.

Saw this on Sunday. Meh.

I'd give it a 5\10. It was extremely tame for me. The PG-13 rating probably did help it money-wise, but really watered down some portions that could have been really creepy. The Shining-lite vibe throughout, but stayed right under the notch that would have made this more memorable.

Cusack did alright when he was playing the cynical sarcastic, but started breaking when he had to show extreme emotions and in some later scenes got some snickers from the audience (when he wasn't supposed to). Jackson was Jackson and got away with saying the word "fuck" in the most memorable line in the film but also had a great scene with Cusack in his office. I thought they performed that pretty well. Also, as someone has already stated, the very beginning of his stay in the room was done well, and I did enjoy that. I also liked the paintings. That may be a more personal thing, as I love horror films that have "haunted" paintings in them.

I did not like the predictable jump scares or the absolute randomness of some of the encounters. I have not read the story, so I am guessing his father and the other occupants had more of a back story as well as the room itself. Speaking of the room, it went through the predictable gambit of effects that happen in all haunted rooms, but it switched from looking like a real room, to looking too much like a set.

I dunno. I wasn't too impressed with it. Not bad, worth the 5 bucks it cost to watch it, but I wont watch it again.

I'm always behind-- but just watched this one.. REALLY enjoyed it, and I'm not a fan of Stephen King.

I posted a review on this somewhere...I should dig it up. Some things really confused me, like what the fuck happened at the end? In the short story he sets himself on fire to break from his insanity. And in the movie...there actually are ghosts? I didn't understand the ending, which kind of brought the movie down for me. Also, as Morbid said above, the movie is way too tame. Again, the story is much more suspenseful (King is much better at short fiction in my opinion)...especially with the moving eyes in the pictures, the 'shadow people' (who weren't even in the film?) and the terrific phone call, where, in the story, he's actually on the other end...not "the room". Someone clear this up?

I just didn't understand the film. 6/10 for an attempt. It could have been much better...after I saw The Mist I actually forgot 1408 was made the same year...

I kinda took the ending to mean that he had 'taken the evil' with him when he left.. that look in Cusack's eyes was downright creepy.. I've not read the short story.. so I don't really have much to compare it to.. The movie itself was a tad predictable, but still enjoyable (reads I jumped at least twice instead of falling asleep)
