Zion Harris of East Chicago, Ind., was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Hospitals at 1:25 p.m. Thursday, a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said.
Zion was a trauma patient at the hospital and died from injuries possibly consistent with abuse, according to a source.
A Saturday autopsy determined Zion died from cerebral injuries and blunt head trauma from child abuse, according to the medical examiner's office. Her death was ruled a homicide.
The Indiana Department of Child Services is reviewing the circumstances of Harris' death to determine if abuse or neglect played a role, spokeswoman Ann Houseworth said Friday. She said the agency has had no prior history with the family.
