Plot Synopsis: It's easy to forget that this Spartan, violent film, which begat the Rambo series, was such a big hit in 1982 because it was a good movie. Green Beret vet John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) wanders into the wrong small town to find a fellow 'Nam buddy and gets the living heck kicked out of him by the local law enforcement (led by Brian Dennehy). The vet strikes back the only way he knows how, leading to a visceral, if unrealistic, flight and fight through the local mountains. Based on the 1972 novel by David Morrell, this film saved Stallone's then-foundering career and the Rambo character became the inspiration for countless political cartoons. But this film is Deliverance without the moral ambiguity. --Keith Simanton

I had not realized that my son had not seen this film, or any of the Rambo films. He just saw the trailer that was posted and is now interested in seeing them. Because of this, I decided to post a couple Rambo related items, starting with the first movie.
I still love this film. I still remember the term "Rambo" immediately being absorbed into our culture and the fact that it is still used to this day. I remember everyone running out to buy the "Rambo knife" from the local Army\Navy stores. I still remember watching this film in the theaters thinking that John Rambo was the toughest, coolest character I had seen on film since Han Solo.
It is an extremely simple tale and unlike the novel it is based off of, you do sympathise with the John Rambo character and are left feeling that the good ol' boys deserved what they got. While the sequels are all memorable, and laughable, do not let that deter you from checking out the film that started it all, or the novel it was based off of. This particular DVD is the one with the commentary by David Morrell, the author of the book.
