William Singalargh is arrested for assault with a hedgehog.

Police in Whakatane, New Zealand have arrested and charged a 27 year old with assaulting a teenage boy with an unusual weapon: a hedgehog.

Police claim that William Singalargh grabbed the hedgehog and threw it at the 15 year old teenage boy about 5 meters (about 15 feet), hitting the victim in the leg, causing a large red welt, and several puncture wounds.

It's unknown by police whether the two people involved knew each other, or if alcohol contributed to this bizarre attack. Also unknown was if the hedgehog was alive or dead when the attack occurred, but was found dead when collected for evidence.

I have to give you thanks just for the title of that one! Quite an unusual weapon. My tulips are coming up, and one variety produces these absolutely huge red tulips (I call them my "radioactive tulips"). They have such a heft to them that I've imagined beating the shit out of someone with a clutch of them....

i've often thought the same about some of the zucchini we grow that get away from us in size. one of my employees entered one in a local fair. that sucker weighed 19 lbs!:p

Singalargh was convicted of common assault and offensive behavior following a defended hearing. He had pleaded innocent to the charges.

He was fined a total of $545, of which $389 were paid to his victim.

A more serious charge of assault with a weapon — the hedgehog — was dropped. The maximum penalty for that charge is five years in prison.
