Morgan Harrington
State police say they've received dozens of leads, but there's been no sign of Morgan Harrington.
The Virginia Tech student, who is from Roanoke County, attended Northside High School and graduated from Lord Botetourt High. Harrington was last seen at the Metallica concert at the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville Saturday night. She apparently left the arena and was not allowed back in.
Her last contact with friends at the concert was on her cell phone around 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Police found her identification and phone near the arena. On Tuesday, police searched the area. State police want anyone who took pictures at the concert to take a closer look to see if anyone resembles Morgan Harrington.
Meanwhile, Harrington's parents wait. The not knowing is tough. News7's Jean Jadhon spoke with them at their Roanoke County home. They say Morgan was at the family home before she left for the concert Saturday around noon. She was expected back home in Roanoke County on Sunday.
"She wanted to make sure I was home on Sunday to help her study for a math test she was having today," said Dan Harrington.
"She was coming home Sunday to study with her papa," said Gil Harrington.
The Harringtons haven't heard from their daughter.
"This is not typical behavior for Morgan," said Harrington.
"What do you know that happened, that you can tell us. Where is that missing link?," asked News7's Jean Jadhon.
"There is so little, which is the frustrating thing. We know so little, no one disappears," said Gil Harrington.
"You know this behavior is not like Morgan. I don't think Morgan has run off," said Dan Harrington. "I think this is an abduction."
And so the Harringtons wait and hope.
"We got in her bed and just tried to feel her, and feel her covers, and feel her presence," said Gil Harrington. "Whenever my mind starts to go into any of those avenues of what could have happened, what she could be experiencing, I can't go there. I rein my mind in. I don't want to go there. I want to be positive. I want my whole child to come back to me."

This is somewhat local to me. Is it just me but ever since the VA Tech massacre this university seems to make this type of news on a regular basis. I'm sure that people go missing, get murdered, etc. at universities all over but doesn't seem to get amount of press coverage as VA Tech.

Who Is Morgan Harrington?
CBS 6's Catie Beck travels to Roanoke to learn more about the girl behind the headlines. One month ago Tuesday, 20-year-old Morgan Harrington disappeared outside a concert in Charlottesville. Since then her pictures and her parents have remained in the headlines.
In fact, on the one month mark a woman's body was found in Roanoke, the city where Morgan Harrington lived with her parents. State Police quickly notified area media that the body was not Morgan.
No matter where you are in Virginia, it's hard to get away from the search for the Virginia Tech student.
But with tens of thousands of people going missing every year, we wanted to know more about the girl behind the headlines.
CBS 6 travelled to Roanoke late last week. A parade of yellow ribbons surrounded the Harrington home and the car windows of nearby neighbors have become homegrown rolling billboards. One thing already handed down in the Harrington family is the use of a phrase,it's family lingo, and it's a symbol that can be seen virtually everywhere. Two dots, four dots and then one dot.
"I just flash them 2-4-1," says Gill. She explains it's meaning: "I love you too much, forever and once more."
t was the last thing Morgan said to her mother before she left for Charlottesville the night she disappeared.
"Morgan would always get in the car and flip down that visor get her lipstick on good, being Morgan, then would flip it back up. She would 2-4-1 to me and say '2-4-1' and then pull away," her mother recalls.http://www.wtvr.com/news/wtvr-morgan-harrington-story,0,1260432.story

Virginia State Police and Albemarle County police are currently scrutinizing the skeletal remains of a body found on an Albemarle County farm. State Police said they would release further information "if anything should develop concerning this scene and the disappearance of Morgan Harrington."
A 5 p.m. press conference is scheduled at the Virginia State Police office in Charlottesville.
David H. Bass is the owner of Anchorage Farm, the property where the body was found. He said he found the body this morning at 8:30 a.m., and that authorities have asked him not to speak to the media.http://www.roanoke.com/news/breaking/wb/234362

Open letter from President Charles W. Steger regarding the loss of Morgan Harrington
By Charles W. Steger
BLACKSBURG, Va., January 26, 2010 -- For more than three months, the entire Virginia Tech community, along with thousands upon thousands around the world, has held out hope for the safe return of Morgan Harrington.
Sadly, today’s news from Albemarle County has put an end to that hope, and once again, we find our strength and resilience tested in the face of profound grief and loss.

Police 'fairly certain' remains are student missing from Metallica concert(CNN) --
Police tentatively identified remains found on a remote farm as the Virginia Tech student who disappeared in October during a Metallica concert.
Morgan Harrington, a 20-year-old education major, went to the concert at the University of Virginia's John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Virginia, on October 17. She was separated from her friends and was the subject of repeated searches.
Police said skeletal remains were found after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday by a farmer driving a tractor through a hay field on his 700-acre farm. The area has no public access point, police said.
The farm is about 10 miles from where the concert was being held.
The farm's owner, David Dass, told CNN affiliate WTVR that he was out looking for damage after wind and rain knocked down several trees in his yard over the past week. He told WTVR that the area is at least a mile and a half from a main roadway.
Morgan Harrington's body found? "I looked down and saw what looked like a human skull, and my first thought was that it was Morgan Harrington," Dass told WTVR, adding that he immediately called 911.
WTVR: State police 'confident' remains are Harrington
There was significant evidence leading police to believe that the remains are Harrington's, Virginia State Police Col. W. Steven Flaherty said, though he declined to specify what the evidence was.
Police said the area where the remains were found had not been searched during the early stages of the investigation into her disappearance.
The girl's parents, Dan and Gil Harrington, were in town to identify the remains, WTVR reported.
Dan Harrington, in tears, told WTVR that "this is a horrible day" for his family.
Gil Harrington expressed concerns Saturday that there was beginning to be complacency in the search, she wrote in a blog on the Web site set up to help find their daughter.
On Sunday, more than three months after Morgan went missing, Gil Harrington still clung to hope.
"Despite the length of time Morgan has been gone I remain hopeful," she wrote. "Part of me is waiting to be surprised. Waiting for God to pull the rabbit out of the hat and bring Morgan home.
"I remember that the light always returns, it cannot help but return. Will the light of my life return soon? I cannot imagine that all the water of Morgan's potential is to run down the drain and be wasted. Can it really play out like that?"
Now, it appears, the Harringtons finally have their answer. Police say they have now switched their focus to finding out how Morgan Harrington ended up in the remote farm and who put her there.
During the concert, Harrington left her friends to use the restroom, police said. When she did not return, they called her cell phone at 8:48 p.m. She told them she was outside the arena and could not get back in because of its policy, Geller said, but told them not to worry about her and that she would find a ride home.
There are restrooms inside the arena, Geller said, and police do not know how or why Harrington got outside. Witnesses who saw her outside the arena said she did not appear to be with anyone, Geller said.
About 9:30 p.m. that night, witnesses reported seeing a person matching Harrington's description walking on a nearby bridge, Geller said. No further sightings were reported.
Harrington's purse, with her identification and cell phone inside, was found the following day in an overflow parking lot near the arena, Geller said. A friend had driven Harrington's car to the concert, she said, and was still in possession of the car keys when they got separated.
Harrington was reported missing the day after the concert, when she did not show up at her parents' home to study for a math exam with her father.
Working with police and the Texas-based Laura Recovery Center, the Harringtons organized community searches, saying they would not give up hope that their daughter would be found.
A $150,000 reward has been offered for information leading to Harrington's whereabouts, Geller said. Of that, Metallica contributed $50,000.
The couple was joined at a news conference after her disappearance by Ed Smart, whose daughter Elizabeth was abducted in 2002. She returned home nine months later, after police say they found her in the custody of Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee.
Harrington said he reached out to Smart last week to seek advice on how to go through the disappearance of a child.
Harrington was wearing a black Pantera T-shirt, a black miniskirt, black tights and black boots when last seen.http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/01/26/virginia.harrington.remains/index.html http://i49.tinypic.com/e0r43k.jpg

I didn't want to post this on the FindMorgan.com forums, because a lot of people over there are in a GREAT deal of pain, even as they vow to track down the killer.
But it seems obvious to me that Morgan was never alive and missing. That the remains are "skeletonized" indicates to me that she was killed the night she disappeared. We've had some intense weather in this area, it's true, including about two feet of snow in late December which has only JUST completely melted (thanks to yesterday's 60 degrees). Exposure destroys a body quickly, but snow slows the process, doesn't it? So for her body to have been "skeletonized" by this point indicates she's been out there for pretty much the entire time since she was last seen alive.
I don't know, does this make sense? I'm still trying to get a grip from the whole situation.

I agree with Pennie. Morgan Harrington has remained on the radar in Charlottesville for pretty much the entire time she's been missing. And the community doesn't have a lot of missing people to begin with, let alone missing people with long blonde hair and dark clothes.

Tonight, an apparent tragic ending to an horrific ordeal that began 101 days ago. Virginia State Police say they have found a body that they believe is missing 20-year-old coed Morgan Harrington.
COL. STEVEN FLAHERTY, VIRGINIA STATE POLICE..The remains are being transported to the office of the chief medical examiner in Richmond for identification and autopsy. .
Morgan was wearing dark clothing and jewelry the night she went missing.
The badly-decomposed remains were reportedly found, along with dark clothing and a bracelet
and most likely will be a homicide.
VELEZ-MITCHELL: So many unanswered questions. Why did Morgan leave the arena alone when she arrived with friends? Was the woman seen hitchhiking and possibly getting into a car actually Morgan?
Tonight, we launch a new battle in the war on women, as the hunt for a killer or killers begins
I`m sorry, but the time has come to stop just doing the "who, what, when, where, why and how" and say we`ve got a deep sickness in our society, and it involves violence against women. And it has got to stop. We have got to stop having more and more Morgans and more and more Dr. and Mrs. Harringtons.
The family, of course, was here to help identify any remains. State police are not exactly saying that what has led them to believe that this is the body, but we do have some sources at the actual site where this body was found and they say there was black clothing and blond hair on the skeletal remains still, as well as a bracelet that are very similar to the description of Morgan Harrington from when she disappeared.
Let`s listen to what police said about the area where these skeletal remains were found.
RADER: At the time that Ms. Harrington disappeared, the hay field would have been up to about your waist. And of course, you know, it has snowed since then. So a lot of environmental things have happened since October.
It is a farm land, and it does not have public access. And I think that describes itself fairly well. .
Now, the farm owner says the specific location where the body was found is at least a mile and a half from the road. So clearly, we don`t know what happened to her. But we know that something untoward happened. She didn`t make it there herself. She didn`t walk there and collapse. She encountered somebody sinister or a group of sinister people who took advantage of her and killed her and left her there
Remember this from October? Listen.
DAN HARRINGTON, MORGAN`S FATHER: I`d like to say if Morgan is out there and hears us, please come home. And if someone has Morgan, please let her come home safely.
But I have -- I have a problem with this. I`ve -- I`ve been to John Paul Jones Arena. My granddaughter goes to UVA there. And my husband took real ill, and I had to take him wherever he went. He had cancer, and he died last June.
But last year we went to that arena, and I had to go out and get a pillow for him. They would not let me back in the building. And I think that is the No. 1 problem at these concerts and all. They are so afraid they`re going to lose a dollar that somebody is going to sneak in that door. If they had let that child back in there that night she`d be alive today.
she went out to use the lady`s room, somehow ended up outside whatever dividing line and didn`t have her ticket stub. They wouldn`t let her back in. And then she was seen with various people. There were various sightings. And the next thing you know, she`s telling her friends, "I`ll make my way home," and she`s hitchhiking and never seen again. http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/1001/26/ijvm.01.html

You know, there are reports that say this was a hay field, and if that`s the case, if she disappeared and it was waist high, really, anybody in that area would not have been able to find anybody unless they walked right up on it.
Now, one thing that`s happened since she disappeared is we`ve had a lot of weather in the area. Over a foot of snow hit the region a few weeks ago, and likely that padded down whatever was on the ground. I know this area. You know, it`s just 10 miles from the University of Virginia campus, but police say there`s no road that leads to where the body was. It`s a very remote area. Obviously, there`s a road that leads to the farm, to the farmer`s house, but to get to this area, it`s at least a mile from route 26 and it`s not somewhere that`s easy to get to. The farmer said himself he rarely goes out there, a couple of times a year.
There were reports the victim had long blond hair. There are no public access points. And again, this farmer says to get to this area, what you would have to do is you would have to basically walk to this area, Nancy. You could not drive. If you did live on a neighboring property to this farm, you would even have to climb a barbed wire fence just to get over to this property.
There are also crossing (ph) creeks on this property, Nancy. So again, no vehicles can just drive up and down this farm. Also, we`re hearing from the farm owner today investigators had to walk -- once they got on scene, Nancy, they had to walk to this exact location where these remains were found.
understand also that the owner of the property who happened upon the body says that there was no attempt made to cover her up. She wasn`t in a shallow grave. There wasn`t a blanket or any covering over her body. She was just lying there.
Charlottesville and central Virginia is, you know, an area that is generally considered safe. And of course, you know, the Metallica concert drew people from all over the East Coast. But you know, this kind of thing occurs all over the country. And it`s usually someone who knows the area, someone who`s comfortable with, you know, the roads. And it`s not generally going to be someone who`s just out of the blue, you know, driving through town and decides to do this.
What I had heard was that there were black clothing. I don`t know if they were on the body or near the body. And I don`t even know if that`s a confirmed fact, but that is what I had heard.
it`s my understanding that a Swarovski crystal necklace was found on the skeleton. Is that similar to the one that Morgan had?
NEWMAN: Yes, it was. And of course, that is the report that we`re hearing, that she did have on some sort of Swarovski crystal necklace with some kind of, like, a linked chain on it, as you`re seeing in this photo that we`re showing you now.
the most interesting thing to me is that location, way, way back there on a private farm. I`ve seen this before, and usually, it means that the person who put the body there is very well aware it is a private farm. In other words, he thinks no one`s going to accidentally discover the body by hiking by or whatever. He put it there because he knew no one would go there.
the investigators told us they were specifically interested in finding a digital camera. And I am wondering if any mention was made of that today, as to whether they found that camera or why they would have been interested specifically in a digital camera.
information that came out, you know, a couple months after Morgan Harrington went missing. Joe Raider (ph) with state police said they were looking for a red digital camera that was in her possession, Morgan Harrington`s possession, the night she went missing. And it`s something police would like to find. And you may wonder, you know, how could they, you know, be fairly certain this is her. Well, this could be one of the items that they found with the body. We just don`t know that. We`re waiting for more information from police.
i believe that she was probably walked into that location. I believe that whoever did this left enough evidence that they will be able to figure it out. I believe that they need to find out who the registered offenders are within that community. And I suspect that there`s a pretty small population of individuals who could be responsible for this crime.
it`s probably somebody local and that it very well may be somebody with a criminal history and/or a registered sex offender. Certainly somebody that knows the area and is able to get her to that location and get out without being detected.
they`re also probably going to be talking to the farmer about maybe who knew the farm. I know that he said two people hunted in the area. He allowed two men to hunt on the farm. Surely police are going to want to talk to them. They`re going to try to figure out who knew the area well and if they`re involved.
So I`d like to find out. Was it just two guys or was it two occasions with a group of hunters on that farm?
I kind of agree with the police officer. I don`t think that someone carried her in there. I doubt if they drug her in there.
I wouldn`t be surprised she was walked in there, maybe under the influence of alcohol, drugs or what have you. And then something happened at that location. So I think they`ve got a lot of work to do with -- with what they have, but it`s going to take a lot of investigative...
She obviously was taken there and what I find interesting, Nancy, is that at the time it happened, with that three-foot grass, for a while, there was a path right from where they went in to where they ended.
She probably did not go voluntarily. After the autopsy they will make a determination as to whether or not she was fighting the person that brought her there. .
There may be something like horse hair on the body which would mean that she got there by horseback. There`s also a possibility -- this is 10 miles from the venue, or 10 miles from where she disappeared.
Were there any small planes in the area? Did she go and leave the concern and go with someone and wind up on the plane? And perhaps the body was even dropped out of the plane into this remote area. That will all be determined by the medical examiner when they examine the body and find out what is the cause of death. http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/1001/26/ng.01.html

Damn if I can find where I read this, but apparently the venue is really brutal about allowing people back in. Of course, this probably didn't matter to anyone at all until somebody who wasn't allowed back in went missing right away. I would imagine they've changed the policy. They should at least let you wait in a lobby or vestibule or something.

I caught myself hoping this wasn't Morgan's remains but after more thinking I've come to see no matter if it is or isn't Morgan someone died, some family lost a child/sister/daughter/granddaughter. I hope there is enough evidence to help find who did this to Morgan. My prayers are with her loved ones.

I have a theory here.
I think this pretty young girl (that may have possibly been under the influence of drugs/booze) was outside of the concert fraternizing with people since she couldn't get back in. She possibly met someone or a group of people who she thought were cool and told her friends "she would find her own way home". I know I've done that on some crazy nights anyway.
This person or persons ended up not being so nice and ditched her phone and other items while entrapping her in a vehicle. I don't think the motive was robbery. I think it was flat out rape/murder. This person or persons either raped her elsewhere, in the car, or in the field she was found in. I think possibly the field because it was desolate with no one to hear her screams and tall grass to conceal their actions. The deed is done and she is offed so no one will ever know.
Just a theory.

pointless re-entry rules are why this girl is dead. how it happened, even if it is murder, takes a backseat to this as far as i'm concerned. rigid venue protocol and the unwillingness to place common sense and human compassion above words on paper is why we are talking about this. this should be a lesson for us all, we must take the time to examine the way we operate in life and truly determine what is of greater importance. if we care too much about one thing over another, the results are not gonna be pretty.

Someone hopped the fence and carried her for 30 minutes? I just don't know about that.

Dental records confirm body is Va. Tech student's(CNN) --
Skeletal remains found in a hayfield are those of Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington, a spokeswoman for the Virginia State Police said Wednesday.
The remains were identified based on dental records provided by the victim's family, spokeswoman Corinne Geller said.
Morgan Harrington, a 20-year-old education major, went to a Metallica concert at the University of Virginia's John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Virginia, on October 17.

She told them she was outside the arena and could not get back in because of its policy, police said, but told them not to worry about her and that she would find a ride home.
There are restrooms inside the arena, police said, and police do not know how or why Harrington got outside. Witnesses who saw her outside the arena said she did not appear to be with anyone, police said.
About 9:30 p.m. that night, witnesses reported seeing a person matching Harrington's description walking on a nearby bridge, police said. No further sightings were reported.
Harrington's purse, with her identification and cell phone inside, was found the following day in an overflow parking lot near the arena, police said.
A $150,000 reward has been offered for information leading to Harrington's whereabouts, police said.
Harrington was wearing a black Pantera T-shirt, a black miniskirt, black tights and black boots when last seen.http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/01/27/virginia.harrington.remains/index.html

I was raised this way. I never needed it - I wasn't a partier - but it was always available if necessary. In fact, I suspect that if I called my mom up NOW (she lives an hour from me) and needed a ride somewhere, she would do it. Obviously it's only valid if I truly need the ride, but I'm pretty sure she would drop everything and drive out here if I really needed it.

distraught parents, along with her 22-year-old brother Alex held an emotional news conference just hours ago. They chose to speak out from a very specific location. Listen.
DR. DAN HARRINGTON, MORGAN`S FATHER: We wanted to come here today, because this is the last place that Morgan was seen before someone took her and murdered her.
My understanding is that this is not a random place that someone came upon accidentally. This is known to someone here. It`s a local person, and as I`ve said all along, Morgan would be found within five miles of this bridge, and it`s probably a local person. And I`m sure I`m 100 percent right.
GIL HARRINGTON, MORGAN`S MOTHER: For the first time in 101 days, I am not thinking every minute, what is he doing to my daughter now? What is he doing to her? What is she having to endure?
Meantime, her father has said the medical examiner will release his daughter`s body in about five or six days. Imagine their grief. Imagine their rage.
Henry, what is the very latest?
HENRY GRAFF, REPORTER, WVIR: Well, what we can tell you right now is they did identify the remains of Morgan Harrington today just before noon. Also, what we are learning today, police back out on the scene, combing some 700 acres of farmland for potential clues in this case right now.
Also today again, the Harringtons speaking out, a very emotional news conference at the last spot that their daughter was seen alive. So a lot of stuff happening today.
Well, investigators told me earlier today, Jane, I spoke with Virginia State Police. And they said that the purse that was left in the parking lot did not appear like it was dumped. It appeared to be dropped off. Like Morgan had dropped it on the ground and didn`t realize it, that she had left it there.
They also say that that night she did, in fact, consume alcohol, and had fallen multiple times. This is according to eyewitness accounts that they gave to police. And that she did have a scrape on her chin, not consistent with an assault, but is consistent with the fact that she may have just tripped and fell. rest is at link http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/1001/27/ijvm.01.html

everything reported said she was looking forward to this conference. If she ends up outside, why would she, after looking forward to it for so many months, walk away from it and say, "I`ll find my way home? Why don`t you just get me my ticket stub, bring it down here and get me in there?"
It`s almost like she had maybe set up a time to meet somebody outside that stadium, and that possibly went wrong. So many different ways, but I agree with your callers. Something is wrong with that scenario. How do you end up out in the bathroom outside, and then not want to get back in when you`re looking forward to that for months?
what about this 3:45 a.m. sighting? Some newspaper delivery woman insists that she saw Morgan the next morning, in the morning.
SIGONA: And that`s just one of 600 leads that have come in, Jane, that investigators have worked out. What they do know for sure, based on those witness accounts, is that Morgan was last seen -- the last known sighting was on that Copeley Road Bridge.
And also, when Morgan called her friends back inside, she was very calm. She was very casual. She just said, "Hey, look, I`m cool. I`m going to find a ride home." http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/1001/27/ijvm.01.html

At the presser on the bridge today (haven't been through all the transcripts), I believe one of the reports asked (the father) about identifying the remains. He explained they weren't allowed on the property since it was a crime scene so the had to fly by on a helicopter and were sure it was their daughter (later confirmed with dental records).
That just made me so sad. I could barely hear her mom talking, but she said something like even her bones were beautiful (sort of mumbling). The look on the reporter's face was just, well, shock, at that statement.
Remember, I haven't read the exact transcripts. This as a presser around 1pm today, I think, plus I was on the telephone with the insurance company.

Police ask residents for information in Virginia Tech student's deathFebruary 4, 2010 6:10 p.m. EST(CNN) --
The person responsible for a Virginia Tech student's death was familiar with the area where her body was recovered, police said Thursday.
The farmland site where Morgan Harrington's remains were found is the "most significant" aspect of the investigation into her death, Virginia State Police Lt. Joe Rader said.
He asked that members of the surrounding community call police with any details of the area and who has frequented it.
"People in North Garden, people in the Anchorage Farm area, you know what goes on there," Rader said, referring to areas of Virginia's Albemarle County. "You know the history. You know who comes in and out of that vicinity. You may not realize it, but you probably have some information for us that you don't think is important."
Morgan Harrington disappeared October 17, after attending a Metallica concert at the University of Virginia's John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Virginia. The 20-year-old education major was separated from her friends at the concert.
A farmer discovered her skeletal remains on his 700-acre farm January 26, police said. The farm is about 10 miles from the concert site.
There have been no arrests in the case, police said. The cause of her death is still under investigation.
Investigators think that the farm "did not present an unnecessary risk for the person responsible" and that the person passed through or visited the farm or the nearby area, Rader said.
Traveling to the area where the remains were found "would have created a significant risk for any person not familiar to that area and not comfortable with that type of setting," Rader said.
"Farmland like the place where Morgan's body was located has obstacles, difficult obstacles. It has streams, it has fences, it has defects, it has terrain that changes. That's important, that's a high-risk opportunity to pick that location to take Morgan Harrington unless you're familiar with the area," he said.
"We don't believe those are challenges that someone unfamiliar with the area would confront."
The farmer who found Harrington's remains came across them in a remote section of a hayfield, police said last month. The farm's owner, David Dass, told CNN affiliate WTVR that he was out looking for damage after wind and rain knocked down several trees in his yard when he found "what looked like a human skull." He told WTVR that the area is at least a mile and a half from a main roadway.
Read more about the case from WTVR
"There is no public access to this particular area. The hayfield was last cut in August 2009 and would have been possibly waist-high by mid-October 2009," a January police statement said.
On the October night Harrington went missing, she had left her friends to use the restroom during the concert, police said. When she did not return, her friends called her cell phone at 8:48 p.m. She told them she was outside the arena and could not get back in because of its policy, police said, but she told them not to worry about her and she would find a ride home.
There are restrooms inside the arena, police said, and authorities do not know how or why Harrington got outside. Witnesses who saw her outside the arena said she did not appear to be with anyone, police said.
About 9:30 p.m., witnesses reported seeing a person matching Harrington's description walking on a nearby bridge, police said. No further sightings were reported.
Harrington's purse, with her identification and cell phone inside, was found the following day in an overflow parking lot near the arena, police said. A friend had driven Harrington's car to the concert, she said, and still had the car keys when they became separated.
Police are asking anyone with information on the case to call 434-709-1685.
The family will hold a Mass for Harrington on Friday in Roanoke, Virginia.
"We are grief stricken by her death but also lifted by the knowledge that Morgan Dana Harrington was precious to so many and will not be forgotten," her family wrote Monday on their Web site dedicated to Harrington. "She mattered, to us all." STORY HIGHLIGHTS

Investigation progresses into death of Morgan Harrington
In the six months since the disappearance and death of Morgan D. Harrington, Virginia State Police with the assistance of local investigators have pursued close to a thousand leads and interviewed more than 100 individuals as part of the on-going investigation.
In addition, forensic testing has recently confirmed an article of clothing as belonging to the 20-year-old Roanoke woman.
Harrington disappeared the night of Oct. 17, 2009, during a Metallica concert at the John Paul Jones Arena on the University of Virginia (UVA) grounds in Charlottesville, Va. During the course of the investigation, police have been able to establish a timeline of Miss Harrington’s movements once she ended up outside of the arena at approximately 8:30 p.m. After talking to her friends on her cell phone, she then walked through the parking lot of University Hall and was also seen in the Lannigan Athletic Field parking lot, which is also used for RV parking. At around 9:30 p.m., she was last seen walking on the Copeley Road bridge near Ivy Road, hitchhiking for a ride.
[...]
Recently completed testing by the Virginia Department of Forensic Science confirmed that a black T-shirt discovered Nov. 11, 2009, in the city of Charlottesville is the one Harrington was last seen wearing the night of the concert. The T-shirt, with the word “Pantera” spelled out in tan letters across the front, was discovered by a Charlottesville resident on Nov. 11, 2009, and turned over to investigators. The T-shirt was found on 15th Street near the intersection of Grady Avenue.
In addition, the team of investigators from the University of Virginia Police, Albemarle County Police, Charlottesville Police, Virginia State Police and the FBI assigned to the case has made substantial progress in evaluating countless possibilities and scenarios related to the circumstances surrounding Harrington’s disappearance and death.
“We are still encouraging the public to come forward with relevant information concerning Morgan Harrington,” said Lt. Joe Rader, Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Appomattox Field Office. “As this investigation continues to progress, factual details are more helpful and important to investigators than theoretical abstracts. It’s going to take that one courageous phone call to Crime Stoppers from someone who knows something firsthand about this case that will be the key to linking together the evidence and data collected to date.”
Anyone with information is asked to call the Jefferson Area Crime Stoppers at (434) 977-4000. A reward of $150,041 is still available for anyone with information that leads to a resolution of this crime. Calls can also be made to local police or the Virginia State Police Tip Line at (434) 352-3467 or emailed to the State Police at bci-appomattox@vsp.virginia.gov. Virginia State Police released this composite sketch today
of a suspected attacker in the Morgan Harrington case
and an assault in Fairfax County.
The attacker in an abduction police have tied to the death of Morgan D. Harrington assaulted his victim physically as well as sexually, police said this afternoon.
In that case, the attacker carried his victim to a park in a residential neighborhood to assault her, Fairfax police said.
The victim, a 26-year-old woman, was walking through a residential neighborhood on her way home from a grocery store when she was attacked, said Sgt. Pam Nevlud of the City of Fairfax Police Department.
“An unidentified man grabbed her from behind,” Nevlud said. “He picked her up and carried her to a park that’s just adjacent to [the street], and that’s where she was physically and sexually assaulted.”
Nevlud declined to comment on the nature of the physical assault.
The state police announced today that forensic evidence found in the Harrington case matches evidence from the 2005 assault.

Composite sketch generates more than 50 tips in 24 hours
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - This will be a working holiday weekend for state police investigators after a sketch sparks a flood of new tips in the Morgan Harrington case.
That composite sketch was released just 24 hours ago, but it's already generated more than 50 tips. Investigators are combing through dozens of new leads in the abduction and murder of Harrington.
NBC12 broke the news to Morgan's mother Friday night about the number of tips sparked by this sketch alone. Police say leads are still coming in. This was Gil Harrington's first reaction to the new tips in her daughter's brutal death last fall.
"I'm glad to hear it's shaking something loose out of the tree. That's great," said Gil Harrington.
Calls and emails have poured in from Fairfax to Charlottesville and well beyond Virginia's borders ever since the sketch made headlines again and went national.
"It pretty much runs the gamut people who think they may know, the person people who are adamant they know this person, which is great," said Virginia State Police spokeswoman, Corrine Geller.
State police released the drawing Thursday after revealing the man, wanted for a Fairfax City abduction and sexual assault, is linked through forensic evidence to Harrington's abduction and murder. Investigators spent Friday vetting and prioritizing the leads.
"Hopefully, in the end, that tip is among those fifty we've received so far, or continue to receive over the holiday weekend, we will bring not only the Morgan Harrington case to a resolution but also the 2005 abduction and assault," said Geller.
Harrington says she's now wondering how many more women have fallen victim to this mystery man.
"Perhaps this amount of media attention will give someone who might be sitting on the sidelines the courage to come forward. I'd be surprised if that weren't the case," said Harrington.

Morgan Harrington's remains were found on an Albemarle County farm Jan. 26, more than three months after the 20-year-old disappeared from a rock concert at the University of Virginia. The cause of death hasn't been released.
Virginia State Police say forensic evidence has connected the slaying to a 2005 unsolved abduction and sexual assault in northern Virginia.http://www.wric.com/global/story.asp?s=12863680

Harringtons Still Looking for Answers
As Morgan Harrington's parents prepare for a memorial to honor their daughter they continue to put pressure on police to find her killer.
Dan Harrington said, "There are people that we will go to - politicians, governor, senators - that we are going to find an answer here and we are not going to go away".
20-year-old Morgan Harrington disappeared from outside a concert at John Paul Jones Arena one year ago. There are still no arrests in this case.
It's a point o frustration for her parents, Dan and Gil Harrington, as they prepare to honor their daughter with a permanent memorial on grounds. The Harringtons sat down with us this afternoon.
They say they are frustrated because police have no one in custody, but also because they don't always feel included in the investigation.
Morgan was last seen alive on the Copeley Bridge after leaving the Metallica concert at John Paul Jones Arena on October 17 2009. Three months later, on January 26, a farmer discovered her body on Anchorage Farm in Albemarle County.
This summer investigators identified a DNA connection between Morgan's murder and a 2005 sexual assault in Fairfax County. They even released a composite sketch. But the Harringtons say the investigation is moving too slowly for them.
Gil Harrington said, "The stance that perhaps is being taken to find answers is to sit back and wait for a DNA hit from another crime to find the man, and I'm not satisfied to do that."
The Harringtons also say they feel the police have been resistant to including them in the investigation, although recently they say that's been getting better thanks to weekly meetings with investigators. They say they are most concerned about this turning into a cold case.

I hope at the very least the arena has changed its policy regarding not letting someone back in once they have left. I mean...surely she had a ticket stub....that is just awful. Cannot imagine the guy who had to inforce that rule upon her.....and then she turns up dead. UGH.
They really need to change that.

I went to an Elton John concert up in Columbus back in like 98and had stepped out to smoke one. I didn't have my ticket stub and the guy at the gates was like "it's policy", but he let me back in. Surly it had to have been the stub I had to have, as I can swear my mom was out there with me too, for a brief time.

DNA links Morgan Harrington's killer with a Fairfax County abduction-rape case
The disappearance and death of Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington last year made local and national headlines.
And the case remains unsolved.
But there is a crucial DNA link with another case in Fairfax County.
Her family and friends have organized a caravan to raise awareness of the link
They have traveled from Roanoke to Fairfax, with signs on their cars, passing out leaflets with a composite sketch of a man who abducted and raped a 25-year old Fairfax County woman in 2005.
"We want justice for our daughter, but we want the community to be safe," said Dan Harrington, Morgan's father.
Morgan Harrington was abducted and killed after leaving a Metallica concert in Charlottesville in October 2009.
Her parents hope to keep the unsolved case alive in the public eye.
"It's too late for us," said Gil Harrington, Morgan's mother. "Our daughter is dead. But it's not too late for the next girl, and that's why I can't give up."
"The DNA collected from that young lady is connected forensically to Morgan's murder," said Amanda St. Clair, a volunteer in the caravan. "There's no question about it."Police warn the suspect may have changed his appearance in five years. But the hope is someone might recognize him from the sketch on the poster.
The family and police still have many questions. Why was Morgan's body moved to a remote farm? Is her killer now in Fairfax County?
Police have posted a $150,000 reward for information in this case.

Morgan's last steps retraced.

For the first time, Morgan Harrington's parents walked the hayfield Tuesday where a farmer discovered her skeletal remains one year ago today.
When they reached that secluded site on the 740-acre farm in Albemarle County, Gil Harrington buried her face in her husband's chest and wept.
Moments later, with Dan Harrington at her shoulder, she knelt at the spot that once cradled her daughter's bones and ran her hands through the dark soil and wheat-colored grass.
"I don't feel Morgan here," Gil Harrington said. "She's gone. I had to be here and look and feel if there was anything [of Morgan] here."
She added, "Evil happened here."
[...]
Cappuzzo and the Harringtons, who are residents of Roanoke County, led a small group of TV and newspaper reporters Tuesday on a walking tour of the key known events of Oct. 17, 2009.
When Gil Harrington's weeping began at the farm, all cameras swiveled in her direction. The Harringtons said Tuesday's media tour was emotionally grueling. But they emphasized that, if renewed coverage of the case leads to capturing the killer, the raw grief provoked will justify the pain.
Gil Harrington said she believes more than one person might have participated in the killing. Cappuzzo declined to say whether investigators share this view. His narrative throughout the day generally referenced a single killer who was male.
[...]
Cappuzzo said behavioral and geographical crime scene specialists have convinced authorities that Morgan's killer was familiar with the territory where her remains were found in a small clearing near a tree-lined creek.
[...]
Cappuzzo said investigators believe the man who abducted and killed Morgan is still "moving about" in the nearby Red Hill and North Garden sections of Albemarle County.
"I feel very confident this case will solve," he said.
He would not say whether police have a specific suspect in mind. But he added, "That person doesn't know it yet, but we're getting closer."
[...]
Cappuzzo said behavioral specialists recommended Tuesday's recap of Morgan's disappearance and death. Gil Harrington described the couple's feelings about finding those responsible.
"For Dan, it's personal," she said. "As a father and with a father's protective instincts, he wants punishment.
"For me, I feel punishment will be delivered, if not here then later. But I don't want anyone else to live through this. My child is dead, and nothing will bring her back. But I can't give up on the next girl."

That update with it's description is powerful and it gives me the feeling this case will be solved, probably sooner than most. I really hope they catch the person/s responsible. And I think they will.

I live in Fairfax County, but I've never seen anyone who looks like that. Wish I had so I could call the tipline...

A new sketch has been released by the FBI of the man believed to be connected to the disappearance and murder of Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington. The 20-year old was last seen at a concert in Charlottesville in October 2009. Her body was found in January 2010 on a farm in Albemarle County.
A new alert posted on the “Help Save the Next Girl” Facebook page shows a revised sketch of the man forensically linked to both Harrington and a sexual assault in Fairfax County back in 2005.
Gil Harrington, Morgan’s mother, tells WSLS the new sketch is much more realistic and hopes it will jog someone’s memory.

Metallica is helping law enforcement authorities try to find the killer of a Virginia Tech student who disappeared from an October 2009 concert by the heavy metal band in Charlottesville, Va.
As part of an FBI multimedia campaign announced Wednesday, Metallica lead singer James Hetfield appears in an online video appealing to the public for tips in the death of Morgan Harrington.
[...]
“Bringing renewed attention to the case will get people thinking about it again,” Virginia State Police Special Agent Dino Cappuzzo said in a statement. “Our hope is that someone will come forward and provide a crucial piece of information that will help us solve the murder.”
The multimedia campaign launched Wednesday includes information on social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook, a YouTube public service announcement by Metallica and electronic billboards in Virginia and along the East Coast.
"If you’ve seen the person in this sketch or have any information about this case, or any others, please contact your local police or submit your information online,” Hetfield says in the online video. “Remember, any information, no matter how small you might think it is, could be that crucial piece that investigators need to help solve the case.”
Law enforcement agencies are asking anyone with information to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324) or the Virginia State Police Tip line at 434-352-3467.
