Police officers responded to Arthur Avenue in the Bronx where a driver of an SUV said an animal was stuck in his vehicle's engine Monday afternoon.

Indeed, when officers looked inside they saw a cat jammed in the engine block of the 2005 Nissan Murano, police said.

The driver told cops that he had driven about 2 miles from Marcy Place and the Grand Concourse before pulling over and realizing something was wrong.

Members of the NYPD's elite Emergency Service Unit came to the scene. ESU's Det. Jeffrey King and Det. Kris Cataldo worked to free the cat.

The cat was then taken to Animal Care and Control in good condition.

A cat who rode two miles through New York City while stuck in the engine compartment of an SUV has lived to meow about it.

Wilfred Rodriguez heard rattling while he was driving Monday in the Bronx. After he parked, he spotted a bushy tail and a paw sticking out of the SUV's front end.

His initial reaction: "Oh my God! I killed a cat." He was relieved when the paw moved.

Detectives with the New York Police Department's Emergency Service Unit freed the grease-covered kitty by removing the SUV's battery and other vehicle parts.

Earlier this year I had a bunch of kittens that were about 4 months old, too many to count, it seemed. I drove about 10 miles to my son's house and 2 kitttens just jumped out from under my car and said "wassup?" I was flabbergasted considering how far I drove and all the horrible things that could have happened to them.

My daughter in law decided they could stay since they went to so much trouble to get there.

Cats are crazy!! But I love them just the same!!

We have a cat that installed herself into the engine compartment in winter during a trip to the grocery store less than a mile away. She was in the store's parking lot and crawled up into the engine.

I guess if you find a cat that determined...take it home with you.

I especially like the fact that the New York Police Department's super elite Emergency Service Unit rescued the kitteh. They are on patrol 365 anyway.

A component of the Special Operations Division, the unit provides specialized support and advanced equipment to other NYPD units. For example, its Canine Unit helps with searches for perpetrators and missing persons.[1] The Emergency Service Unit also functions as a Special Weapons and Tactical Unit (SWAT) and NYPD hostage negotiators assist and secure the safety of hostages. Members of "ESU" are cross trained in multiple disciplines for police and rescue work. They are always on patrol (all three tours, 365 days a year) with 10 Heavy Rescue trucks, each manned by a police officer and a sergeant, and often more than twice as many smaller Radio Emergency Patrol vehicles containing two ESU police officers. There are also two or more patrol lieutenants in unmarked vehicles on duty at all times to supervise ESU operations where needed. These are called "E-Cars" on the NYPD radio, for example, "E-5".

That was a happy ending for the kitty!

Anyone know if it was that man's cat? I would like to hear that it has a good home!
