Stephen Dailey was also charged with child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury and a crime of violence, which is a sentence enhancer.
On the afternoon of Sept. 15, paramedics were called to the home on a report of a 2-month-old who was not breathing and was non-responsive. The baby had blood in his throat and was transported to Denver Health, according to the arrest affidavit.
Dailey told the doctors that he had put "151 rum" on the baby's gums to help with teething and that caused the baby to cough and make a thrusting motion for air, according to the arrest affidavit.
"Stephen stated that the baby was coughing and thrusting for air, not breathing. Stephen then stated he screwed up. He stated that he bent down and was not supporting the baby's neck and bounced the baby on the bed too hard," according to the arrest affidavit.
He then stated he "violently shook the baby for 10 to 15 seconds ... throwing the baby up and down as he walked up the stairs to the bedroom ... threw the baby on the bed four times with force, catching the baby as the baby bounced off the mattress."
He then told police he put the baby in the bassinet and turned the baby's head sideways, out of anger, according to the arrest affidavit.
Dr. Guy Upshaw with Denver Health said the infant has bleeding in his brain and "has a substantial risk of death or impairment of function of part of his body."http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/21297990/detail.html
The baby's mother told detectives she left her son with his father to go shopping at about 4:30 p.m. The affidavit said Dailey called her at 4:50 p.m. to tell her the their son was injured.http://www.denverpost.com/commented/ci_13561802
