A woman intentionally set a fire at her boyfriend's mobile home in suburban Detroit, killing two of her young children while fleeing with a third, a prosecutor said Tuesday in filing murder charges.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy did not specify a motive, saying only that Sharon Hinojosa "knowingly left the children who were not fathered by her boyfriend."
Hinojosa, 29, was charged with arson, second-degree murder and felony murder, which is murder committed during another crime. The maximum penalty is life in prison.


"This should send chills up the spine of every person. I can't imagine the abject horror of the last seconds of their young lives," Worthy said.

She said Hinojosa set the fire around 3 a.m. Friday in Huron Township, about 20 miles southwest of Detroit, killing daughter Alayna Hinojosa, 3, and son Anthony Hinojosa, 4. Hinojosa escaped with a 1-year-old son, Worthy said, while Alayna and Anthony remained trapped inside.

"I cannot tell you how disgusting this case has been. ... It has to be one of the worst ways to die," the prosecutor said.

Hinojosa, meanwhile, was in a hospital after drinking rubbing alcohol. Worthy would not provide details about how or when it happened, but Hinojosa has been in custody since the weekend.

A neighbor, Joe Dickes, said he tried to rescue the children, first through the door and then through windows, but flames were too intense.


"We heard the screams inside. There was nothing we could do," he said, referring to himself and another neighbor.


"Sharon was running up and down the street. She didn't care," Dickes recalled. "She said, 'I couldn't wake them up.' Come on, you can throw them out the door."

After Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced murder charges against the woman Tuesday, Joe Dickes, one of Hinojosa's neighbors who tried to save the youngsters during the early Friday blaze, said that behavior began to make sense.

"I'm happy as hell she got charged," said Dickes, who said Hinojosa didn't immediately tell neighbors the other two children were still inside.

Worthy wouldn't spell out a suspected motive or say why investigators believe Hinojosa started the fire, but said the suspect set the blaze and knowingly left 3-year-old Alayna and 4-year-old Anthony inside.

"As a mother, it is extremely distressing to think of innocent children screaming out as their bodies burned in the fire," Worthy said.

Howard Caudill says he can't eat, can't sleep, can't fathom the loss of his 4-year-old son, Anthony Hinojosa.
Anthony, along with his 3-year-old sister Alayna Hinojosa, died of smoke and soot inhalation in a mobile home fire Friday in Huron Township, the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office said Sunday.

In police custody is their mother, Sharon Hinojosa, 29, with whom Caudill said he had a lifelong friendship.

"I would have died for my kid," said Caudill, 30, of Taylor, who said he had Anthony every weekend. "He was a smart, funny, strong little boy."

I could have kicked in the walls of the crappy old trailer to save one my kids. Apparently she waited a bit before mentioning to the neighbors trying to help that two kids where still in the trailer.

Joe Dickes said he saw the front porch ablaze about 3:15 a.m. Friday and ran to talk to Hinojosa, who stood outside by a car where her 1-year-old was inside. She didn't mention her other two children were trapped inside until he asked where they were, he said.

I made the mistake of trying to listen to the 911 tape. OMG what a worthless piece of garbage. Another malignant narcissist. She will never be sorry for what she did. She will be sorry that she did not get away with it but even so she will also love the attention she will be given during the trial.

It sounds like there was a failed "suicide attempt". she just killed two children but she couldn't manage to commit suicide? Go figure. As I was listening to ALL the calls to 911, I thought, What is up with this whole mobile home park, full of people that do not know their own lot numbers? The last caller was the only one that knew their own address and then Sharon called back, seemingly aggravated that the fire department had not arrived yet, she wasn't crying hysterically in that call, it was 3 1/2 minutes from the first call...

Reached Tuesday, Hinojosa's father, Ray, said he did not believe the charges against her.

He said he "didn't really know" what might have happened, but "I don't think she would do it. She was doing really good when she was with the two babies. She had her own little place. ..."

Ray Hinojosa said he heard from his daughter's babysitters and co-workers that Whisler was abusive.

"She took care of those two babies. ... I don't know what that guy put in her head or what happened, because she loved her babies," he said.

Whisler could not be reached for comment, but relatives said he was too upset to be interviewed.

When the fire broke out early Friday morning, neighbor Joe Dickes, 45, broke windows in the trailer trying to save the children.

"I said, 'Come on kids, it's Uncle Jo-Jo; jump into my arms.' Then the flames blew out and singed my hair," he said.

Dickes said Hinojosa did not call for help until the fire was well under way. "It seemed to me that fire was pretty well going before she started screaming," he said.

As far as I can tell, Anthony and Alayna were going by Moms last name of Hinojosa, I have read just about everything there is on these two babies. Anthonys Father, Howard Caudill, said that he didn't know about Anthony for the first six months of his life, then Hinojosas sister is the one that told him and he confronted her about him. Caudill became part of Anthonys life after that, Alaynas Father is Korey Jones, not sure why Alayna didn't have his last name, but apparently Jones did have some kind of contact with Alayna, it's possible that Korey didn't know he was a Father for awhile, too!

Anthony and Alayna Hinojosa will be buried together. Visitation for the children will be Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Voran Funeral Home. The service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

A memorial fund at the Bank of America in Taylor has been set up to help the family pay for the children's funeral. Money can be sent to the Alayna and Anthony Hinojosa fund.
