Neighbors were stunned when Channel 9 Eyewitness News told them police charged a man with plotting to kidnap young girls from a school bus stop and hold them for ransom.
Police said the suspect, Ruben Garcia-Rosario worked as a painter at the home in Cornelius where the two girls lived. He planned to kidnap the girls ahd hold them for enough money to return to Mexico, police said.
"Can't believe it. It's horrible," said Penny Greenwood, a neighbor.
The girls told their parents the man had recently been scoping them out at the bus stop.
"I commend the children enough for the fact that they pointed out the individual and said this guy's here and we don't think he should be here," said Howard Tefft, a family friend.
Police said they were tipped off by a Spanish translator who'd been asked to write a ransom note in English.
"Can't trust to even have your children at the bus stop. That's preggy bad right near your house," Goodman said.
Police in Texas arrested Garcia's wife. They said she was aware of the kidnapping plot.
