Infant's Remains Found in SoCal Yard
An autopsy is scheduled today on the body of an infant whose decomposed remains were found in a Santa Ana yard.
Police sent to 1600 E. Palm St. shortly before 10 a.m. yesterday found the remains in a courtyard area separating two houses on the same property, said Santa Ana police Cpl. Jose Gonzalez.
A dog was lying next to the body, Gonzalez said, but there was no indication that the animal had dug up the remains. Due the advanced state of decomposition, the infant's gender could not be determined.
Authorities don't know how the baby died or who the parents are. Also unclear is when the baby was placed in the yard -- and by whom.
Neighbors said the front house is occupied by a grandfather, grandmother, a son, a daughter-in-law and children. Two elderly women live in the back house, according to police.
Gonzalez said that further search of the property turned up "blankets or clothing" that may have been used to "wrap or conceal the baby."
Gonzalez said there's an alley behind the rear house, but whether the baby was dumped by someone who passed by the house via the alley is unknown.
Detectives said no one at the addresses seems to know anything about the child.
"Right now I can tell you is that the family of both the front house and the back house are cooperating," Gonzalez said.
Neighbors said that traffic in the alley is heavy on Fridays and Sundays. It leads to a fire station and a church.
"With the fire department down the alley, at least they could have dropped it off at the fire department," neighbor Darlene Roberts said. "Very sad, very sad. That poor little child didn't get a chance."
Engine Company No. 2 is one of 100 Orange County fire stations designated as a safe surrender site where newborns can be dropped off with no questions asked.
