GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- A pregnant woman shot and killed outside an apartment complex Sunday had asked the court to lift the restraining order against the man who allegedly took her life.

According to the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel, Anna Maria Macias, 23, had a restraining order against her boyfriend, Lonnie Ray Herrera, 39, after he was accused of child abuse and assaulting her during a February incident in Clifton.

Last week, Macias petitioned the court to lift that restraining order. The Mesa County District’s Attorney Office recommended against the request and a judge agreed.

Herrera is being held on a $2 million warrant in connection with the shooting and killing of Macias in front of her two young children in Grand Junction Sunday night.

Witnesses heard screaming, then shots around 11:15 p.m. Sunday and found Macias in the intersection of N. 23 Road and Belford Avenue. She was rushed to the hospital, but died. She was in her third trimester of pregnancy.

Emergency medical personnel delivered the baby by Caesarean section. The arrest affidavit for Herrera says the baby was born alive but may have brain injuries.

Herrera was arrested in Delta Monday. Delta County Sheriff Fred McKee said Herrera was armed with a semiautomatic handgun when he was taken into custody.

Macias’ 8-year-old daughter told police that Herrera was upset with her mother Sunday night because she would not spend the night with him.

The girl told police Herrera first drove her, her 4-year-old brother and her mom to a remote place where Herrera fired a gun into the air.

The girl said Herrera then drove a van to the apartment complex on Belford Avenue. Herrera then shot her mom after the trio exited the van.
