A New Albany woman was taken into custody Wednesday following a routine traffic stop.
A New Albany police officer stopped 54-year-old Jackie Burton after observing she was not wearing a seatbelt. When he approached the vehicle, he allegedly found a 7-month-old infant that the woman was babysitting, unrestrained on the back floor board of the car. According to a press release, the baby was near broken glass and a gasoline can.
Further investigation revealed that Burton, who lives along the 100 block of E. 13th Street, had an outstanding arrest warrant for failing to appear in court in connection with a marijuana possession charge, and that her operator’s license was suspended. Burton was charged with neglect of a dependent, a class D felony and taken to the Floyd County Jail.
The infant’s mother was located and took custody of the child.
Police said a further investigation into the infant’s welfare will be conducted by Floyd County Child Protection Service officials.
