(AP) — MONROE, La. - Monroe Police have arrested two suspects in the death of an 11-month-old infant in Monroe.

Police said the baby, Zamaree D. Haynes, was severely beaten and unresponsive upon arrival at LSU Medical Center on Thursday. Police have booked the baby's mother, Kenyatta S. Haynes, 21, and her boyfriend, Drukile K. Dunn, 22, with second-degree murder. Dunn is not the baby's biological father, police said.

Both Haynes and Dunn were arrested early Friday and taken to Ouachita Correctional Center.

Police said injuries to the baby's body include old and new rib fractures, a busted lip, black eyes, four old and new human bite marks and multiple bruises to the chest, back and face.

Police said the baby and another child, age 2, were home with Dunn while Haynes left their apartment for about one hour.

Upon returning, police said she reported that the baby was lethargic. According to police, Haynes then took the baby and the other child to her mother's residence. Police said somewhere en route or at the grandmother's home, the baby became unresponsive.

Police said Haynes then took her sister and both children back to the apartment. Haynes left her sister and the 2-year-old, picked up Dunn, and then took the baby to the hospital.

Police say the cause of death is believed to be blunt force trauma to the abdomen area. The investigation into this incident is continuing, police said.
