MAHWAH – Police are conducting a manhunt for the ex-husband of a Rockland County woman found stabbed Friday morning in the parking lot of the Sheraton Crossroads Hotel, authorities said.

Police have identified the victim as Laura Matousek, 46, of Valley Cottage, N.Y. A search is underway for her ex-husband, Allan Pelcak Jr., 41, of Spring Valley, N.Y., Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said.

Police are scouring the area for a blue SUV or pickup they believe belongs to Pelcak, Clarkstown, N.Y., police Captain Bob Mahon said.

Three hotel guests discovered Matousek’s motionless body around 8:15 a.m. in the parking lot, said Kevin Wolford, the general manager of the Sheraton. She apparently carpooled from the hotel lot to a job in Parisppany.

Molinelli said in a news release that police responding to the scene found Matousek with “apparent knife wounds to the front torso.” She was severely injured and unconscious, according to the release.

Matousek was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, where she was listed in critical condition.

Clarkstown police said the woman previously had an order of protection against her ex-husband, which expired. Police did not say when it expired. The couple divorced two years ago, Molinelli said.

The prosecutor said no arrest warrants have been signed for Pelcak, only that he is wanted for questioning.

“She was talking, whispering” to a paramedic who was leaning over her to hear what she was saying, said Wolford, the hotel’s general manager.

The hotel has video surveillance cameras that were focused on that area of the property, Wolford said. A building manager said that police reviewed the footage.

Bergen County Sheriff K-9 units were searching the scene for evidence. A black women’s shoe could be seen lying next to a police marker.

The discovery led to a lockdown at Liberty Elementary School in Valley Cottage, where the former couple’s 5- and 8-year-old children go to school. Some students were bused away from the school shortly after 3:20 p.m.

A police K-9 unit and a marked car followed one of the buses as it drove away.

Emmanuel Estriplet, of New York, said he showed up early to pick up his 10-year-old daughter after he received a call from his wife that something was happening at the school. The school was not releasing students at the time.

“Of course, I’m nervous about it. A lot of funny things are happening right now,” he said.

Police are asking that anyone with information about Pelcak’s whereabouts call either the Mahwah Police Department at 201-529-1000 or the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Major Crimes Unit at 201-226-5653.
