RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - Brazilian police said Thursday that charges have been filed against a businesswoman who claims she was "educating" a 12-year-old girl by allegedly torturing and chaining her to an iron staircase.
Silvia Calabresi, 49, was arrested and will face trial on charges of holding the girl in private confinement, abusing her and forcing her to work in slave-like conditions, said Bruno Hermano, public safety spokesman in Brazil's central Goias state.
Calabresi's maid, who told police she was obeying her employer's orders, also faces torture charges, while Calabresi's husband, son and foster mother are accused of failure to report a crime, inspector Adriana Accorsi said.
The girl's impoverished mother is charged with illegally selling her daughter to Calabresi, Accorsi said.
Five other girls, aged 5 to 15, have since come forward and said they too were tortured on orders from Calabresi, Hermano said.

I wonder if she purchased the rest of the girls as well? I also kinda wonder if she picked em up off of Craigslist...
