SCOTTSDALE, AZ - A child abuse investigation is under way for a 9-month-old infant who was found with cocaine in her system, according to Sgt. Mark Clark of Scottsdale police.
Medical assistance arrived for the child on Thursday when an emergency call was placed by the infant's father after the baby stopped breathing and experienced seizurelike symptoms. An emergency team revived her upon arrival.
The father, Ralph Dipiero III, and the grandfather, Ralph Dipiero, were present at the home when a medical helicopter arrived to bring the infant to Phoenix Children's Hospital. While treating the child, hospital staff discovered that her body contained traces of cocaine and reported their findings to authorities on Friday.
As of Sunday afternoon, the child remains in the hospital and her condition is unknown, Clark said.
