FRANKFORT, BENZIE COUNTY -- A cold case spanning more than 35 years is reopened in Benzie County.

15 year old Terry Sutter was found dead near Frankfort in 1973. Sheriff Rory Heckman says his administration decided collectively to reopen the case. Sheriff Heckman tells 7 & 4 News he can't discuss specifics with the investigation at this time but says the ultimate goal is to give the Sutter family closure.

" I've been able to put together a series of articles about what really happened. We're coming to, not a conclusion, but at least things that weren't ever revealed, " said Pete Sandman.

Pete Sandman, a former managing editor of the Benzie County Record Patriot, has been closely following the Sutter case since the beginning.

" He was just your typical kid going into his sophomore year.Cold case file, if they go over a year, are probably never really solved, but this one might be. Somebody has to know what happened in a certain situation and maybe that person will be able to turn a little bit more to the investigators."

The Sutter family is wishing for the same thing...that after all this time someone will come forward with information. The family is hopeful that people will start talking.

" Everybody has theories...the family has theories... they also have names that they've given me over the course of 30--years and a lot of notes."

Special Report: Mystery on the
Bluffs

A dark cloud has cast a shadow on a
Benzie County community for more
than 36 years.
That's how long the mystery has
been going on surrounding the
death of a young teenage boy
named Terry Sutter.
Terry came from a large, tight-knit
family in Frankfort. He was known
to always look after his younger
siblings.
"I guess you could call us clannish,"
says Roxanne Gilbert, Terry's older
sister. "We're there for each other
in an instant."
This seemingly sound, desirable
family changed forever more than
three decades ago.
On September 1st, 1973, Terry got a
ride from his mother into
downtown Frankfort. He planned to
catch a movie and then go bowling
nearby.
He was supposed to call when he
wanted a ride home.
The 15-year-old boy never called
and never showed. His family never
saw him alive again.
"I guess no one gives you a script
for when your son or brother is
murdered," says Joy Schmid, Terry's
younger sister. "I think everybody
didn't know what to do."
Terry's body turned up on a Lake
Michigan beach the following day.
It was first believed Terry fell down
the bluffs and drowned.
But in the days following his death,
suspicion grew but no real answers
emerged.
And now -- in 2010 -- what exactly
happened to Terry Sutter is still a
mystery.
More than 36 years after his death,
Terry's family is still seeking closure
and justice.
"I'm hopeful. I'm very hopeful," says
Schmid. "In fact, I want to say this is
it."

Shaking the tree does not seem to have scared any birds up two years ago. At least, I cannot find any updates for this story.

And there was no replies to Terry Sutter's sister's plea: http://community.aetv.com/service/displayDiscussionThreads.kickAction?as=119137&w=267379&d=531684
