NEW CASTLE -- A Good Samaritan was punched and bitten by a man she tried to help Tuesday night after he wrecked and rolled his vehicle on Interstate 70.
"It was just crazy. I was just trying to help," Danielle Herndon said Wednesday.
Herndon, 28, and her mother, Deborah Daffron, were on their way home to New Castle after shopping in Indianapolis. Daffron, who was driving east in the passing lane, observed a speeding vehicle in her rear-view mirror at about 8:40 p.m.
Before she could get out of the way, that car, driven by Rex Allen Shannon, 21, Middletown, passed her in the grass on the side of the road, crossed the highway, flipped four or five times and landed south of the roadway.
"I thought he was dead," Herndon said.
Her mother pulled to the side of the road and Herndon called 911. She ran to Shannon's vehicle, a heap of black metal. He had already climbed out of the rubble, was on his knees and vomiting when Herndon got to him. She noticed two car seats, and worried that there were children injured inside the car. It was a false alarm.
"I leaned down and asked him 'Are you OK?' I didn't see any blood or anything. 'Are you OK? Is everything OK?' And he started cussing me," Herndon said.
Other passersby stopped to help. Herndon said Shannon continued cussing and charged toward her mother. She got in his way and "he hit me in the nose and we went down. And he bit me in about four different places and I had blood from head to toe and he had a scratch on him. He was still biting me when the cops finally showed up," Herndon said.
The Middletown man is not a stranger to local authorities. In January 2006, he received a suspended sentence in Henry Superior Court 2 after pleading guilty to charges, filed in August 2004, of resisting law enforcement, battery by body waste and driving while intoxicated.
