Last week, Denise Dias received dozens of phone calls demanding a ransom for her 17-year-old daughter, Emily, or else her captors vowed she would be "cut into little pieces."
But it was Emily Dias in handcuffs after a police investigation revealed the Falmouth High School student had teamed up with two other people to stage her own kidnapping and extort $800 from her mother.
The teenager faces conspiracy charges as well as one count of extortion by threat of injury, according to court records. John Cabral, 24, and his sister, Laura Cabral, 23, face similar charges for allegedly helping with the phony kidnapping.
On Aug. 26, Denise Dias went to police and told officers she had been receiving threats from John and Laura Cabral regarding Emily.
While talking to the officers, she received another call from Laura Cabral demanding a meeting outside an East Falmouth restaurant for the immediate delivery of $800.
Police followed the elder Dias to the meeting spot and arrested Laura Cabral for extortion. Once Cabral was in custody, she told police the fake kidnapping was Emily's idea and that Emily was not in any danger, police said.

Cabral said Emily Dias offered her $100 to take part in the kidnapping scheme. Cabral reportedly said she intended to use the money to secure a ride to Falmouth District Court last Thursday for her appearance on an unrelated criminal case.

In addition to the extortion and conspiracy charges, police said John Cabral was charged with one count of threatening to commit a crime following his arrest. He allegedly screamed death threats at Dias' mother over the phone from his jail cell, police said.
John Cabral was held on $10,000 bail and is set for a pretrial hearing Sept. 23. Laura Cabral was released and is scheduled to be back in Falmouth District Court Sept. 29. Emily Dias remains in custody and will be arraigned Oct. 1, according to court records.
As John Cabral was screaming threats over the phone, police said, Emily was calling her mom for bail money.http://www.capecodonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090903/NEWS/909030321/-1/NEWS

Private... but she gives out her phone number. I'm betting she won't be answering calls for a while.
