A bald eagle was reintroduced to the wild Thursday, four months after being removed from a north Sarasota golf course where the bird was suffering from Avian pox, the same disease that had killed its sibling.

Nursed back to health at the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey in Maitland, the eagle was released by former state Sen. Lisa Carlton in a noon ceremony at the T. Mabry Carlton Reserve.

"It was a moving sight," said Belinda Perry, manager of natural resources for Sarasota County. "The hood was taken off of it, and she kind of let it go off in the air, and off it went."

The hope is that other eagles will help it develop hunting and foraging skills. The release was scheduled for August because migratory eagles are beginning to return this month from the north.

The eaglet was removed in April from near its nest at the Sara Bay Golf and Country Club.

"One fledgling actually died, and the other one was on the ground when it was rescued," Perry said.

In April, the eaglet was big enough to take short flights from its nest. Now, it is 7 months old.

"He's grown, so he's ready to set up shop somewhere else," Perry said.

I love bald eagles! When we were in Alaska, I saw one in the wild for the first time and I bawled my eyes out. They're incredible animals.

I really hope it's able to learn how to take care of itself by other eagles. I wonder if they tagged it?
