The body of 12-year-old John Fulton, who was known as a happy, high-functioning autistic child, was found early Monday night in a neighbouring home at the same housing complex in which he lived.
Not long after, the RCMP said it had launched a homicide investigation, though they did not release the cause of the boy's death.
In a news release issued Tuesday, RCMP Sgt. Rob Vermuelen said investigators are looking for a woman in connection with the case.
Police are seeking Kimberly (Kim) Ruth Noyes, 42, who is described as white, 5'5" and 165 pounds, with mostly gray hair. She was last seen wearing dark pants and a long-sleeve burgundy shirt, riding a black mountain bike through Grand Forks on Tuesday morning.
"Kimberly Ruth Noyes does pose a threat to herself and possibly others due to her diagnosed state of mental health," the news release stated. "Although not historically violent, due to Noyes' current emotional state the RCMP is advising the public of the need for caution and awareness should Noyes be encountered."
Anyone who encounters Noyes is instructed to call 911.
Fulton disappeared late Saturday afternoon from the front steps of his home in the small community of Grand Forks, which is about 600 kilometres east of Vancouver in B.C.'s southern Interior.
His disappearance sparked an exhaustive search by police and local volunteers.
Grand Forks Mayor Brian Taylor said local residents are in shock.
"We pride ourselves on being a safe community," he said. "Children here walk to school and parents have a sense of comfort, and I think we're going to lose that."
About 4,000 residents live in Grand Forks.
Members of the public who have any information about the case are asked to call Grand Forks police at 250-442-8288 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
