A man in Shelby is now facing murder and child abuse charges, after police believe he killed a 2-year-old girl late Thursday night.
Police said they were called to an apartment shortly after 9 p.m. because the child was unresponsive. The girl was taken to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Officers said initial reports indicated the child was in the tub taking a bath and was later found unresponsive by the caregiver.
Officer said the caregiver was Wesley Canipe, 20. Police also believe he’s responsible for the girl’s drowning. Canipe is charged with intentional child abuse and murder, and is being held in the Cleveland County Jail without bond. He’s expected to be in court on Friday.
The circumstances surrounding the child’s death are still under investigation. Police have not said what the relationship between Canipe and the girl are, or why Canipe may have intentionally killed the child.http://www.wsoctv.com/news/20394950/detail.html
Intentional abuse with unintended death OR he intended to kill her?

And found on True Crime Report...
Canipe reportedly told police that the child was in a tub taking a bath when he left the room, and when he came back, she was unresponsive. However, police tell NewsChannel 36 they have determined that Canipe was in the room when the girl went under water and is responsible for her death.

Yep, his MS. Boring one, too.
Hmmm - I have no clue what True Crime Report is :noidea: (probably do but call it something else) but NewsChannel 36 link is http://www.wcnc.com/news/topstories/stories/wcnc-081409-mw-drowning-death.dbd6980b.html
I wonder how police determined it? He must have confessed or maybe a witness??? I wish they wouldn't be so cryptic, but it's early. Hope more will come out.

The video is worth a look at the source. (http://www.wsoctv.com/news/20394950/detail.html)
Wesley Paul Canipe, 20, showed little emotion and said very few words as he appeared in court early Friday.
Shelby police said they were called to an apartment on Eaves Road shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday when Canipe reported he found the child that he was caring for unresponsive in the bath tub.
A neighbor, who is trained nurse and mother, said Canipe banged on her door for help and she gave CPR to the girl, but was unable to save her. She said the evening is a blur, and her heart is broken.
Neighbor says Canipe showed little emotion right after the incident didn't even ask how the baby was as police arrived. Murdering baby bastard. I hope his life is taken, at the least rots in prison for the remainder of his useless life.
I wonder where the mother was?
Rest in peace baby girl.

I do believe that Ohio still has the death penalty.... though that would be too swift and kind maybe.

you're right... i just find it disturbing that some people are ok with grown people who aren't related giving little kids a bath. sometimes i guess it's ok depending on the situation but for the most part I don't think so.
Besides when they're little, as a mom, bath time is one of my favorite times of the day. They're so cute and happy.

I agree and I never understand a woman's logic of letting anyone around to bathe your child....I don't care how great of a person, it's just not appropriate for any 20 year old man who is not this baby's daddy to be bathing her. Another stupid bitch ass hoe who cost anther child their life!
My kids absolutely love bath time, like that's the best time. It amazes me how many children die in the damn bathtub, my children's paradise....!?!

The thing that scares me is that I did all of these things wrong...except the bathing. I didn't let my husband do that with my oldest daughter...ever! But he did change her diaper not long after we moved in together and I'm lucky that I didn't learn the hard way. I feel so guilty having been one of those stupid mothers.

What he stood there and watched her drown? How the hell could anyone watch and let a child drown. For the life of me I will never understand that. Only someone with a sick and twisted mind can do that and to me they need to be locked away for eva! However, like everyone else said I would never let anyone but the dad bath my daughter. Who knows if they are perverted or not and what they are capable of. Anyhow, I would never leave a young man to watch my child anyhow unless they were family or a real close friend I truly knew.

I don't think he stood there and watched her drown. I think he held her under. 2 yo's can sit themselves back up. If she'd have gone under, she'd have gotten back up, unless she was being held down. I'd like to know if the police have a motive on this one.

Im not going to stand up for the mother here because i dont know what happened but is it possible she did not approve of this man giving her daughter a bath... Could he have been babysitting? You can lay down the rules all you want to a babysitter but the reality is that you really dont know what goes on while you are working. Like i said not standing up for the mother here but im not looking down on her either untill there is more out there to this story.

Wesley Paul Canipe, 23, rejected the state’s second-degree murder plea offer Thursday morning. He will now be tried for charges of first-degree murder and felony child abuse inflicting serious injury.
Canipe requested additional time to consider the plea offer. His last court appearance was two weeks ago.
On Aug. 13, 2009, authorities responded to the Laurel Hill apartments located at 1526 Eaves Road. Canipe told authorities at the scene that he found Lilly Willover, 2, unresponsive in a bathtub. Police said Canipe was watching Lilly while her mother was at work.
An autopsy report from the N.C. Medical Examiner’s Office determined that the girl had drowned.
Several “fresh” injuries were found on her head and middle back, according to the autopsy.
Lilly had an abrasion on her abdomen. The report listed bruises on her buttocks and abrasions on her face and chest.
[...]
Prosecutor Elizabeth Lari told the presiding judge a trial date will most likely be set around the work schedule of Lilly’s mother, noting a conflict of possible duty tours. Lilly’s mother works for the U.S. military, Lari said.
Canipe also faces charges in a Lawndale break in, according to an arrest warrant. The alleged incident on Nov. 10, 2011, spawned additional charges for the murder defendant, including felony breaking and/or entering, larceny after breaking/entering and possession of stolen goods.
