BEND, Ore. -- An Oregon man is five months pregnant, according to a national magazine.
Thomas Beatie, who used to be a woman, appeared in the most recent issue of The Advocate, a magazine for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender readers, Portland, Ore., television station KPTV reported.

Mr. Zora ... who is ALL KINDS of freaked out because my lesbian sister and her partner have conceived a fetus ... would simply pass the hell out if he saw this one.
I may have to save the link to prove to him that things could be crazier than they are right now.

I know it's early morning, but I must say I am a wee bit confused. How the hell did "he" get pregnant? The article states he only had chest reconstruction (i.e. titties removed) but kept reproductive organs he was born with (i.e. ovaries, tubes, etc), began testosterone therapy but stopped taking it and was able to get pregnant. Married to a chick so I must be missing something bcs where does the sperm come in? This is a totally redundant question bcs I am thinking I probably don't want to know. Just wondering out loud.

To me...birth is beautiful. But this...well, it just kinda creeps me out. I'm not even going to try and pretend to understand the 'hows' of this happening, I'd much rather push it to the back of my head and not think about it.

This story baffles me as to why it gets so much attention because it's not a pregnant man, but a pregnant woman. A woman who had her boobs cut off, changed her name, dresses as a man, takes male hormones (since stopped), etc, but still, biologically, very much a woman. She ovulated, shot sperm up herself in a syringe, and voila.
I think there are some difficult ethical considerations in a case like this, things about their story that make me extremely uncomfortable, but being as how I have normally have very little interest in internet debate, I'll keep them to myself. ;) That being said, they have their right to privacy and that innocent child surely has a right to be treated like a normal kid, so I hope no one gives them any problems.

So... they figured that being lesbians was too much to deal with and if he had a fake pee pee that would make it all okay? Artificial insemination... at home... with a syringe... hmmmmm
Well this all sounds "interesting", I am rather troubled by it.

Laments "he" can't breastfeed! Why in the fuck did this woman, and she is still a woman, become transgendered to begin with? She seems to be extremly confused as to what she wants to be. This is not a pregnant man, nor a man who just had a baby. This is a woman who wants to be both sexes at once it seems. I have transgendered friends and this kinda irritates them too.

Point well taken Nell...but people use the media for far more selfish, personal gains...at least these gains primarily go to the children and maybe the public can learn a thing or two about tolerance....maybe.

No. Biological characteristics don't equate to social qualities!
I believe being a he or a she is not a social characteristic. If it something perceived, then that argument would hold. However I think it is subjective at this point what the perception of this person is. Agreed biology wise she is female. I see how she can pretend to be male, but that's about it. Not much better than a disguise. This is a good one for three things.

Legally, on his birth certificate, marriage licence, every legal document says he is a man. He is on his was to becoming a man. But since his wife cannot bear anymore children, he's waiting so they can have a family.
I just don't understand the hate that is directed at him. They are loving, caring parents. And Transgendered people are BORN that way. In their minds, they are the other gender, the body just developed wrong. So since we have the tools to make the body what the mind perceives, I think it's wonderful.
He has had to stop taking the testosterone until after the second baby, but if you notice, he still has facial hair after all this time. He was born a man inside, whether or not he completes the outside is up to him.
I agree IF he's doing it for money, they really haven't been paid for most interviews, Barbara Walters even said that on her tv special. They say that yes, they could have kept quiet, but he's trying to educate people on being trans gendered and I personally think it's very brave of him!
penelopejo
November 18th, 2008, 10:50 AM
Well, I'm not really directing any hate toward him. I understand that sometimes there are people out there who feel they are not what they are. I'm just saying that to me, she's still a she until she finishes everything. That's including giving birth. To me, that is a woman, not a man.

Look half my family is gay. 2 brothers and one sister, so I know it runs in the family, in the genes and he is who he is. I am not faulting him for that. But I live in Oregon and see smaller stories that don't make the national news and believe me when I say that they are making money, getting tons of gifts and the like. That to me is exploiting his kids and making this the focus of his life. That is what is annoying to me. I personally have nothing against transgendered people.

Thomas Beatie, the controversial "pregnant man," gave birth to his second child, a healthy baby boy, early this morning, "20/20" has learned.
More PhotosSources close to the couple say that it was a "natural childbirth" and that they have not yet decided on the boy's name. Beatie's wife, Nancy, will be breastfeeding their son, as she did with their daughter, Susan Juliette, who was born last June.
Photos of a bearded Beatie with a pregnant belly caused a sensation last year, leading to headlines about the world's first "pregnant man."
Born a woman named Tracy, Thomas Beatie, now 35, had sex-reassignment surgery and legally changed his gender from female to male in Hawaii.
Beatie, who kept his female reproductive organs, says that he decided to bear children, when his wife Nancy, 46, was not able to.
The couple described their unusual path to parenthood in an exclusive interview with Barbara Walters last year, during which they revealed that Thomas was expecting a second child.
Then in his first trimester, Beatie told Walters he did not go back on the male hormone testosterone after Susan's birth so he could have another baby.
"I feel good," he said. "I had my checkups with my hormone level, as far as the HCG. And everything is right on track."
In last year's exclusive interview, Beatie spoke to Walters about Susan's birth, which was also not via Caesarean section. He was in labor for 40 hours; Nancy Beatie cut the umbilical cord.
Last spring, Thomas Beatie wrote an article in the national gay magazine The Advocate, revealing that he was legally male and that he was pregnant. He released a photo showing his bearded face and pregnant belly. The news -- and the controversial photo -- ignited a media frenzy and provoked questions about traditional notions about sex and gender.
"Hiding a pregnant man is like hiding an 800-pound gorilla," he said of his decision to go public. "Nancy and I wanted to tell our story from our own mouths before it got out."
Beatie says he was surprised at how quickly the news of the "pregnant man" spread.
"I was shocked that it looped around the world in 24 hours," he told Walters. "I mean, it was on Chinese Web sites and, you know, Web sites in Romania and Russia and Brazil."
He became an instant target of the tabloids and paparazzi, and fodder for talk shows and late-night television. Some people called Beatie a freak. He received death threats, and thousands of hateful comments still litter the Internet. To this day, he continues to receive anonymous hate messages.
For months after Susan's birth, Thomas Beatie, 35, and his wife, Nancy Beatie, 46, lived a quiet life in Bend, Ore., where they own a tee shirt company called Define Normal.
Despite concerns for his family's safety, Thomas Beatie said he won't let fear rule their lives and he feels they are a traditional family.

This story frustrates the fuck out of me. I have no problem with transgendered individuals. I do have a problem with the whole sensationalism of "A PREGNANT MAN!!!!! OMGWTFLOLZ!!!!11111eleventy!!!"
If s/he hasn't completed gender reassignment surgery, is in possession of 2 x chromosomes and a functioning uterus, and is ceasing hormone therapy in order to successfully bear 2 children, biologically, s/he is NOT a man. Sorry.

Thomas Beatie, known as the "pregnant man," grabbed headlines worldwide several years ago and the Phoenix resident is now back in the spotlight.
The transgender man married his wife Nancy in 2003, and has since given birth to three children.
According to Beatie's Phoenix attorney, the 37-year-old filed for divorce, but a Phoenix judge wants more information to determine if Beatie's marriage is valid.
Beatie, born in Hawaii as a female, had a state-authorized sex change before marrying his wife and according to his attorney, Beatie was officially recognized as a man by the state of Hawaii complete with a new social security number.
"Hawaii said OK, that it's a valid marriage, who is Arizona to say, well, we're going to ignore one of the other 49 states and say this not a valid marriage?" said Beatie's attorney, David Michael Cantor with the Cantor Law Group.
At issue, a Phoenix judge wants to know if the marriage was in fact valid, because at the time of the wedding Beatie had female sex organs.
"We're fighting Thomas' validation, it's a valid marriage, he's a male, he's a valid person and that's what this fight is all about," said Cantor from his downtown Phoenix office.
Cantor admits it's a unique case with the judge and lawyers learning as they go.
"I would say in Arizona this is new territory," Cantor said. "He (Beatie) is somewhat devastated because he's being told he's not a real person anymore."
[...]
Something else interesting: even though Cantor says he's handling the case for free, the divorce will actually cost Beatie more rather than it being ruled invalid.
"If his marriage isn't validated, he doesn't have to pay spousal maintenance, he actually does better if the marriage is invalidated, but Thomas doesn't want that."

An Arizona judge on Friday refused to grant a divorce for a transgender Arizona man who gave birth to three children after beginning to change his sex from female.
Maricopa County Family Court Judge Douglas Gerlach ruled that Arizona's ban on same-sex marriages prevents Thomas Beatie's 9-year union from being recognized as valid.
Thomas Beatie was born a woman and later underwent a double-mastectomy, and began testosterone hormone therapy and psychological treatment to become a man, but he retained female reproductive organs and gave birth to three children.
Gerlach said he had no jurisdiction to approve a divorce because there's insufficient evidence that Beatie was a man when he married Nancy Beatie in Hawaii. He said the Beaties never provided records to fully explain what Thomas Beatie actually had done and not done to become a man.
"The decision here is not based on the conclusion that this case involves a same-sex marriage merely because one of the parties is a transsexual male, but instead, the decision is compelled by the fact that the parties failed to prove that (Thomas Beatie) was a transsexual male when they were issued their marriage license," he wrote in Friday's ruling.
A spokesman for Beatie, Ryan Gordon, said the judge's comments came as a shock and that Beatie plans to appeal the ruling. He said Beatie legally was married as a man and never was required to disclose that he retained female reproductive organs when applying for and being granted a new birth certificate in Hawaii as a man. He said Beatie halted testosterone treatments so that he could give birth to his children.
"It's unfortunate that the judge out here doesn't recognize marriage in another state," Gordon said.
Beatie is eager to end his marriage, but the couple's divorce plans stalled last summer when Gerlach said he was unable to find legal authority defining a man as someone who can give birth.
Gerlach's ruling didn't address whether Arizona law allows a person who was born female to marry another female after undergoing a sex change operation.
A separate ruling issued Friday by Gerlach sets guidelines on how the Beaties will co-parent their three children and grants them joint authority in making legal decisions. Thomas Beatie is required to pay nearly $240 a month to Nancy Beatie for child support, but she won't get alimony because the marriage was declared invalid.
[...]
Thomas Beatie, known as "The Pregnant Man," was born Tracy Lehuanani Lagondino in Oahu, Hawaii. He began testosterone treatments in 1997 and underwent double mastectomy and chest reconstruction surgery in 2002. He changed his Hawaii driver's license to say he was a man and had a Hawaiian court approve his name change to Thomas.
Gerlach's ruling noted that Thomas Beatie halted the testosterone treatments and that he didn't provide documentation for any additional non-surgical efforts.
Thomas Beatie married his partner Nancy in early 2003 in Honolulu and became pregnant because Nancy was unable to have children. Thomas Beatie conceived with donated sperm and gave birth to children who are now 4, 3 and 2 years old. The couple eventually moved to Arizona.

Weird. I guess this had to happen. If you go out of state to get married where you are allowed to, eventually someone was going to run up against the problem that a state wouldn't recognize their marriage in order to give a divorce. So, now destination divorces must follow?
This could have been tested decades ago, I suppose, in the cases of marriages between races that wouldn't be recognized (say in Mississippi) or child brides (anywhere outside Mississippi).
