Deputies rescue dog stuck in Roza Canal
YAKIMA, Wash. -- Yakima County sheriff's deputies conducted a very unusual rescue Sunday morning: They saved a frightened puppy stuck in
a canal.
The swift-water rescue happened around 9:30 a.m. at the Roza Canal in Terrace Heights, up on a hill behind the Bureau of Reclamation's office, said Sgt. George Town of the Yakima County Sheriff's Office.
A neighbor called authorities after he heard barking from the canal and discovered a young golden lab lying on a ledge behind a gate there. Deputies think the dog got into the water farther upstream, swam under the gate and popped up on the back side.
As luck would have it, the two deputies who responded were trained in swift-water rescue. But before they could decide what to do about the frightened dog, the dog made the decision for them -- he jumped into the water.
"He wanted out of there real bad," Town said. "He saw all of us there and figured, 'Here I come, boys.'"
Deputy Nate Boyer peeled off his uniform, tied a rope around his body and jumped in after the dog, who has been unofficially named the "Dunkin' Water Dog," or DWD for short.
"We were able to hang onto the deputy with a rope and lasso him safely back," Town said. "It went a lot quicker than we were thinking."
The dog, who is under a year old, had no collar so a fire dispatcher took him home for the day.
"Since we don't know who the owner is, at this point she's hoping to hang on to him," Town said.
