SEGUIN — A young mother police say left five children alone overnight to visit her boyfriend remained jailed Saturday on child endangerment charges.
Ashley Ham, 23, was contacted by police around 12:30 a.m. Thursday after police officer Jerry Guerrero saw two young girls walking in the area of Elley and Braden streets. Seguin Police Detective Sgt. Aaron Seidenberger said the girls, ages 6 and 7, told the officer they were looking for a phone to call 9-1-1.
“They basically made a comment to him they were going to call 9-1-1 because they didn’t know where their mom was and she was gone for quite a while,” Seidenberger said.
Guerrero brought the girls the half mile or so to their home in the 700 block of Braden, where they learned another girl, 5, and a boy, 3, were asleep in bed.
A year-old girl was laying in a play pen in a urine-soaked diaper, Seidenberger said.
Police dispatchers were able to get a number for Ham, and left her a message asking that she contact police as soon as possible, Seidenberger said.
Ham called police back and said she was on her way home, and Child Protective Services was called to investigate the incident as well, Seidenberger said.
When Ham arrived at home, she told police the father of the children was supposed to be watching the kids while she was visiting her boyfriend.
Officers were also able to ascertain the name of the father of four of the children, who lives in St. Hedwig, and called him.
When he arrived, he said Ham was lying — that she’d made no arrangements with him to watch the kids.
Police called the woman’s boyfriend, and he told them she’d said she’d left the kids with her sister.
Child Protective Services released the children to the St. Hedwig man, Seidenberger said.
Ham was arrested for abandoning or endangering a child.
If proved at trial, the offense is a state jail felony punishable by six months to two years in a state jail and a fine of up to $10,000.
Bail was set at $10,000.
Seidenberger said the alleged lapse by Ham was a disturbing one.
“Why couldn’t the boyfriend come visit her?” the detective asked. “What was the push to go see a man and leave the kids home alone? I’m not going to speculate.”

here's yet another member of the "that's a face i'd never get tired of slapping" club. with five stairstep kids you'd think she'd be too damn tired to do anything but go to sleep. i know if i had 5 kids, 7,6,5,3 and 1, i'd run like a spotted ape if i even THOUGHT some guy wanted to knock boots with me.

A Seguin mother was arrested early Thursday morning on charges of leaving her five young children home alone.
Police say a patrol officer spotted two young girls wandering down the street a little after midnight. The officer stopped to ask them what they were doing.
According to police, the girls, ages 6 and 7 years old, said they were tired of being home alone. They were trying to find a pay phone to call 911.
Seguin Detective Aaron Seidenberger said the police officer drove the girls the half-mile back to their house. Inside the home, the officers found three more young childen aged 5, 3, and 1.
Seidenberger said the 5 and 3 year olds were sleeping. The one year old was laying in a playpen with a soiled diaper.
Police couldn't find a phone number for the mother inside the home. But dispatch was able to locate a cell phone number for the mother, 23 year old Ashley Ham.
Police say Ham was at her boyfriend's house about 20 minutes away. She claimed the children's father was supposed to be watching the children. The father lives in St. Hedwig, and said he didn't know what she was talking about. However, police say it was Ham's boyfriend that completely discredited her alibi. The boyfriend said Ham told him her sister was home with the kids.

Classy.
Looks like she spent 7 years in high school and STILL didn't manage to graduate. WTF?
Also looks like her boyfriend's got at least one kid of his own too.
Anyone else get the feeling that "Idocracy" was actually a documentary?

Ok, I saw the video and wasn't sure so I sent email to the reporter and she replied right away.
I apologize for the confusion. The story was written verbatim from our on air newscast, and the newscast followed the Ham mother story with the story of the Kerrville mother who was accused earlier in the week of leaving her 18 month old son home alone. That's why the caption under the video says that. Some of Ham's neighbors did tell me she left her children alone frequently, but I had no way to confirm that.
Again, I apologize the caption under the video was written in a misleading way, but I appreciate you writing me to ask for clarification!
Sincerely,
Amanda Stanzilis

Now, I can't find that story on the KENS5 site but have found it on another.
Kerrville police are investigating a mom accused of leaving her toddler alone and in dangerous conditions.
Officers were called to a house on the 500 block of Tomahawk Trail around 9:00 p.m. Friday. Neighbors said it was the 2-year-old's uncontrolled cries that scared them into calling police.
Those neighbors told News 4 WOAI the 2-year-old's mother tricked them into believing she had a baby-sitter for the boy.
"She walked out of her house, turned back around like she was speaking to someone to keep eyes on the baby and just left again," recalled neighbor Celeste Young.
Young lives next door and called 9-1-1 Friday night when she heard the toddler screaming and yelling.
"Once it got to the point that we knew he was in there by himself," Young said. "There was no way I would leave him home by himself."
Police found the toddler alone inside a dark closet, trapped in a playpen. There was no electricity in the house, and the boy's 31-year-old mom was no where to be found.
"We're taking this very seriously," said Officer Paul Gonzalez of the Kerrville Police Department. "This is a very serious case. CPS was notified immediately."
Young says the boy's mom was gone for hours and showed up shortly after police left. Neighbors said when she finally came home that night, she didn't even ask about her 2-year-old. She only asked to borrow more electricity.
The neighbors told News 4 WOAI they are just glad they stepped in to get the boy out of harm's way.
"I feel much better, and we don't have to worry about him getting hurt," added Young. Because had he gotten hurt, then it would have been on all of our consciences."
The toddler's mom has not been arrested but could face some serious criminal charges. Police say she gave them an alibi, and they are checking into it right now.
The boy is now being cared for by Child Protective Services.
No names given yet on this site, but I'll keep looking.

15 When she started popping out babies. Sad, she's trying to trap a knight in shining armor because she was not taught better.
Those poor kids, I hope by some miracle they turn out better.

How in the hell does she afford to feed that many kids unless she's on foodstamps and welfare.. Why in the hell can't teenagers understand that they need to finish high school, get a job and buy a car before thinking of having kids?
Another stupid bitch who doesn't deserve her children.

Texas does NOT have a "family cap" on welfare... which means "the more you make, the more you make" (kids/money) Bush tried to push one though when he was governor but it was a no go.
I bet she really DID take that long to get through high school. She was busy popping out kids and too stupid to figure out what was causing it.

I didn't know that and that pisses me off..
I live in KY and in 1995 my ex left and I worked but I couldn't draw nothing, because I had $1000 in my 401k that I couldn't even draw out. I was so mad and hurt that all those fricking years that I worked I wasn't able to use the money that I paid taxes on. I couldn't get him to pay child support because he moved to Ohio. I told them that if I didn't have pride I would quit my job and sit home on my ass and then I could draw off them.
I brought home $120 a week and $60 went to babysitter and I tell you that was the roughest point of my life. If it had not been for my mother and my brothers and sister paying my car payment, insurance and rent up for 4 months I would have lost everything that I worked for. I was able to pay them back with income taxes but no one would take it, but trust me what goes around comes around because there has been times that a couple of them needed help and I was able to give to them.
Fricking whores that pop them out just to draw more should have to be stopped!

BF left me the month after I bought a used car and I lost my job the same week. Same deal for me. Temp agencies and my willingness to work where ever I could were my only saving grace.
I don't know what she told her kids. I leave to get the damn dog when he gets out of the gate and they are screaming like I've abandoned them. And I'm still in sight.
Such a shame.
