HA! Someone should email this article to the parents of 11 year old Brogan. The worlds most spoiled child. (Check it out in General Topics).

Now here's a real shining star

About a month ago, Abby’s parents got her and her brother a dog from the Greenville Humane Society. When she lost one of those teeth, the tooth fairy gave her two dollars.

“When we went to the Humane Society, there were alot of cages with no beds and toys and stuff like that,“ she said.

So instead of putting that money into her Disneyland vacation fund, she decided to give that money to the Humane Society. In addition, she also decided to open a lemondae stand, like alot of children her age. But this was not any ordinary lemonade stand. This was her opportunity to raise more money for the Humane Society.

They held a lemonade stand a week ago and with that publicity from that, and Abby and her mom going to different businesses, they’ve raised $2,3000 and received about $700 dollars worth of food and treats for the animals at the Humane Society. Not only is Abby getting some attention here in the upstate, she’s also getting some attention nationally.

“Mike Gallagher has really gotten on board and Abby’s posted on Gallagher’s Army website. Gallagher’s a syndicated talk show host and from the Greenville area and currently lives in Texas. He donated $500 to Abby’s efforts yesterday and Jennifer Durst says she cannot put into words how proud of her daughter she is and knows the animals will feel the same way.

“I don’t know what the dogs and cats would say,“ said Jennifer Durst. “But I would say they are going to be real excited because we have so many dog and cat treats and that’s not in the Humane Society budget. I know there are going to get some special treats.

For Abby though, the reason for helping is simple.

“Because they are so cute and nice,“ she says with a smile. “And I really like dogs and cats.“

She would be an ambassador to find them loving homes which they need more than treats. I would so like to see a campaign to get them adopted vs always raising money. The national commercial says donate.. get a t-shirt.. They never say the best idea if you can afford it is to go to your local shelter and adopt and animal and give it a home and a life. Are they missing their ultimate goal? Are more animals being euthanized than might be if a different approach were taken?

While I agree with you, I'm not sure I would put the onus of responsibility on a little girl who is still losing her baby teeth.
If you can't care for them, provide funds to the place that will, yes?

stories like this one give me hope for the future. one little girl made a difference to many animals. perhaps there is something to be said for restructuring how they do things in the shelters.
