It was a cold crystal clear night. That's where Baby Crystal doe gets her name. And today the sun shines down on her, now that her alleged killer is caught. Her mother, 28-year-old Katie Stockton was arrested at a motel outside Kansas City Wednesday. And is now being extradited to Winnebago County.

"We had talked to this young lady before, but there was new focus put on her," says Winnebago County Sheriff Dick Meyers.

Stockton is accused of throwing her newborn baby away by putting it into a trash bag in December 2004 and leaving it on the lawn of this Rockton home. It turns out, Stockton's family lives there. No relatives were available for comment. Authorities say Stockton didn't live there at the time of the crime. But does now.

Baby Crystal's murder effected so many people she had to be buried in a larger casket to hold all of the donated toys. Like this bear. And to this day many in town remain emotional about what happened.

"Because it involves an innocent life. A life filled with endless possibilities and never got a chance. To a compassionate individual it's just unfathomable somebody could be that callous and that cruel that's why it effects most people that way," says Neighbor Janine Brown.

It also impacted Coroner Sue Fiduccia.

"I have Baby Crystal's picture in my office and I always will I felt like she was part of the whole group and part of the guys and gals that were on the scene that night," she says.

Stockton faces two counts of murder. One for intentionally leaving the infant in freezing conditions. And the second for knowing death would result in those conditions. She is now on her way back to Winnebago County to face these charges. And will be held in the Winnebago County Jail. Authorities won't say if there's a boyfriend in the picture or if they're looking for one. They say Stockton's parents are cooperating, but would not comment whether they knew of their daughter's pregnancy.

Police discovered the first baby’s body when a 13-year-old girl called to tell them the family dog brought a bloody piece of clothing back to the home after being outside. Police identified that girl this week as Stockton’s sister.

According to the Rockford newspaper, she gets picked up for non regristration of a vehicle, and driving with a suspended license, and hauled off to jail.

The car gets towed....

She bonds out.

Meanwhile the car remains at the Tow Companies yard for almost a year, when she makes arrangements to pay the tow/storage fees, and then doesn't show up.

So then Bells and Whistles start going off and they finally decide to check the car out and find 2 more bodies....(This after she is arrested for the murder of her daughter in KC)

Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fiduccia says Katie Stockton is in fact their mother. During a news conference this afternoon, Fiduccia identified them as both full-term female infants who are not twins. Their remains were discovered in the trunk of Stockton's car last August, while it was parked in an impound lot in South Beloit. Stockton hasn't officially been charged with their deaths. But is facing murder charges related to her first child "Baby Crystal," who was discovered by the side of the road in Rockton in December 2004. Authorities say they know who fathered one of the babies and need our help in finding the other dad.

"It's important for us to seek information from anybody that would have had an encounter with or an opportunity to be with or relationship with Katie Stockton between December 2004 through mid-2007," says Winnebago County Sheriff Dick Meyers.

Meyers wouldn't elaborate more on why that specific time frame. The infants' cause of deaths are unknown at this time. Fiduccia says further forensic testing is being done to determine whether the babies were stillborn or if they were murdered. Stockton will be back in court February tenth for a status hearing.

Who was Baby Crystal?
Winnebago County sheriff’s deputies discovered the body of a newborn girl in a garbage bag on the side of Will Road in rural northwest Winnebago County in December 2004.

ROCKFORD — Melvin Zarate doesn’t remember the exact date, but he borrowed Katie L. Stockton’s car a few years ago to run an errand.

It was filthy, Zarate said, filled with garbage and clothing.

It’s the same car police searched Wednesday, finding the skeletons of two infants in separate bags in the trunk.

“I’m surprised,” Zarate said. “Just when you think the worst, it’s worse than I thought.”

The “worst” is last week’s murder charges against Stockton stemming from the December 2004 death of a baby girl, found frozen to death in Stockton’s parents’ yard in rural Rockton. The “worse” is the discovery of the bones of two other babies in Stockton’s car.

Zarate, who met Stockton through a mutual friend in 2002, said he spoke with police Tuesday and told them about her car.

“I told them what it was like and that they should go through it,” he said. “I was thinking if she had the baby in the car, they could find evidence in there because she never cleaned it. I thought they’d find evidence about Baby Crystal. Instead, they find two more babies. It’s crazy.”


Winnebago County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Dominic Iasparro also described Stockton’s 1993 Saturn sedan as “full of personal items.”

“There was a tremendous number of items in the car,” he said.

Jestina Gaasterland, who attended Hononegah High School with Stockton and was shocked by Stockton’s arrest in the Baby Crystal death, gasped loudly when she learned of the skeletons that police found in Stockton’s car.

“Oh my God. ... That is sick,” said Gaasterland, who lives in California. “One baby, it’s shocking. Two more? I can’t even put it into words. It makes me want to throw up.”

Police have identified two men as the fathers of dead babies linked to Katie Stockton, a 29-year-old rural Rockton woman charged with killing her newborn daughter in December 2004 by leaving the baby in a garbage bag along a road in single-digit temperatures.

Police have conducted DNA testing on about half a dozen men in the past several months in an attempt to identify the father of the baby found frozen to death in 2004, dubbed Baby Crystal, and the remains of two other baby girls discovered in the trunk of Stockton’s car last summer, about a week after her arrest in the Baby Crystal case.

Winnebago County Sheriff Dick Meyers announced today that one man has been identified as the father of Baby Crystal and another man has been identified as the father of one of the baby girls from the trunk. Neither of the men is the father of the third baby.

The men do not face any charges in the deaths of those babies and are cooperating with police, Meyers said.

“The critical stage that we are at right now in the investigation is filling in the gaps by establishing a time frame in which she would have been involved with these men,” Meyers said. That information, he said, could be used to determine an approximate date of birth for the baby girls found in Stockton’s trunk.

Winnebago County State’s Attorney Joe Bruscato will pursue the death penalty for Katie Stockton, a 29-year-old accused of killing her newborn daughter by abandoning the baby, later dubbed Baby Crystal, along a frozen stretch of Will Road in December 2004.

Stockton, dressed in a red jail jumpsuit and with her arms and legs shackled, cried as Bruscato delivered that news to Judge John Truitt during a court hearing today. She leaned her head on the right shoulder of Assistant Public Defender Susan Kalbanter, who put her arm around Stockton’s waist as Bruscato read into the record some of the statutory aggravating factors of the case.

“This was a cold, calculated, premeditated murder,” Bruscato said. “The victim was under 12 years of age.”

Former Gov. George Ryan announced the moratorium on Jan. 11, 2003, after mounting evidence of a faulty capital punishment system in Illinois, which included the exoneration of death row inmates based on new DNA evidence.

Under the moratorium, people sentenced to death instead receive life in prison. If the moratorium is lifted, the state then has the opportunity to put those offenders to death. But if someone is sentenced to life, they can’t be retried and sentenced to death if the moratorium is lifted, Schmall said.

So why bring a capital case when the result, if the person is found guilty, is not a death sentence but life in prison?

“This seems to be a particularly heinous crime, and a death-penalty case shows the prosecutor feels that way too and he appears tough,” Streb said. “I hesitate to put this into a political context because I don’t know, but there could be some political benefit from pushing a death-penalty case, even if that is not a consideration when they’re deciding to push it.”

No one has been charged in connection with the remains of two babies found in the trunk of Stockton’s car on Aug. 12, 2009. That discovery, made in a South Beloit impound, came about a week after Stockton’s arrest in connection with the Baby Crystal case.

Forensic tests have revealed that the two infants found in the car were not twins; DNA results point to Stockton as the mother.

Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fiduccia said her office is still waiting for a forensic anthropologist’s final report from that investigation. “It should be any day,” she said.

The report is expected to reveal whether the infants were born alive and, possibly, how they died.

Frequently the various charges are under different theories of the law. It is not odd to see multiple chages for a single victim. It is odd to see 10. It seems to vary by state how that all works.

I can't find the list of what all the various charges are, but one article (shortly after she was arrested) lists the original 2:

Prosecutors want judge to change mind on Katie Stockton statements

ROCKFORD — Prosecutors hope to convince Judge John Truitt to reconsider his decision to toss Katie Stockton’s statements to police.

In a 12-page court filing, prosecutors argue that Stockton, the woman accused of killing her newborn in 2004, failed to clearly invoke her rights to remain silent or have an attorney present during questioning.

Stockton showed she actually had “a willingness and desire for a generalized discussion about the investigation,” according to the filing.

A hearing on the prosecution’s request was delayed until Feb. 9 when Stockton’s public defender could not appear in court today because of a family situation.

Truitt in November ruled that Stockton had wanted to assert her right to remain silent and wanted an attorney and that the police questioning should have stopped.

He later ruled that Stockton’s statements were voluntary. That means even though the statements were suppressed, they could be used at an eventual trial if Stockton decided to take the stand in her own defense.

“During the interview the defendant was very chatty and questioned the officers extensively,” prosecutors argued in the filing. “Furthermore, she was selective regarding the questions she chose to answer.”

Stockton is accused of leaving her newborn infant, dubbed Baby Crystal, to freeze to death by the side of the road near her parents’ house in Rockton. Detectives in 2009 found evidence they say links Stockton to the baby.

Detectives later discovered the decomposed remains of two infant girls, each wrapped in a plastic grocery bag, in the trunk of Stockton’s car a week after the police interrogation.

No charges have yet been brought regarding the two because forensic evidence could not prove whether they were born alive, although charges are still possible.

The Winnebago County States' Attorney's office tried to argue that Stockton waived her right to remain silent when she made what was believed to be incriminating statements to investigators. However, the judge said transcripts of that conversation indicate the investigators initiated the discussion, not Stockton.

The judge also says Stockton made a clear request for a lawyer during the conversation. The Winnebago County States Attorney's office wouldn't comment on the decision.

She spoke freely to the officers for about 11 minutes and then asked for a lawyer. The judge ruled once she asked for that lawyer, police should have stopped interrogating her.

Most of the interrogation, which lasted for about an hour, will be kept from the jury.

It's still not clear whether or not Stockton confessed to the murder or what she said. DNA from one of her cigarette's matched DNA found on clothes found with the frozen infant.

After several hours in court, Katie Stockton was sentenced to 50 years in prison Friday, April 5, for leaving her newborn baby to die alongside a northern Winnebago County road in 2004.

Stockton pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in February, more than eight years after the baby, named Baby Crystal by local authorities, was found.

Stockton was also ordered to serve three years probation and given credit for timed served. She has been lodged in the Winnebago County Jail since her arrest in 2009.

Days after Stockton’s arrest, police found the remains of two other babies inside her car. She has not been charged in those deaths. Baby Crystal suffocated and froze to death 99 feet from the front door of the rural Rockton home of Katie L. Stockton’s family. It was a week before Christmas 2004 and the infant was just 99 feet from warmth and safety.

Stockton gave birth to the healthy baby girl in secret Dec. 17, 2004. Stockton had managed to pretend she wasn’t pregnant. She hid it from her friends, co-workers and family who had their suspicions.

“I was in a very dark place for many years,” Stockton told Judge John Truitt. “I apologize to those I hurt and ask forgiveness. I’m truly sorry for the pain and hurt they have endured.”

But Truitt said what Stockton had done — even as he tried not to consider the “deranged” placement of two additional infant skeletons in the trunk of her navy blue Saturn — was too heinous a crime for a lenient sentence.

Stockton chose to leave her baby to die despite all the available options Truitt ticked off: adoption, legal abandonment at a designated safe haven or her own loving family who already cared for her then 4-year-old son.

“You did the incomprehensible,” Truitt told Stockton. “You gave birth, by all accounts, to a healthy, full-term baby girl and you chose to play judge, jury and executioner and put her by the roadside like yesterday’s garbage.”

Stockton wore a black sweater and her hair pulled into a pony tail. She wept through much of the marathon sentencing hearing that lasted most of Friday and included 15 witnesses for the prosecution and just one for Stockton, her mother, Lisa Landsee.

Stockton gave birth alone. The baby was infected with hepatitis and Stockton’s cocaine was in her system, but she was otherwise healthy and would have lived if not for extreme neglect, forensic pathologists noted.

Stockton ignored her baby girl’s cries, stuffed her in a plastic Halloween-themed Menard’s bag with the placenta and a bunch of bloody clothes, packaged it in a white garbage bag with red draw string and left the infant outside her family’s Rockton home in sub-freezing temperatures.

Baby Crystal couldn’t breathe with all the clothes and the plastic. She either suffocated or froze to death.

Winnebago County State’s Attorney Joe Bruscato had at one time sought the death penalty for Stockton before it was abolished in Illinois.

Although the skeletal remains of two additional infant girls were discovered in the trunk of Stockton’s car after her arrest in 2009, it could never be proven they were born alive.

Unlike Baby Crystal who was perfectly preserved by the frigid weather, they were so badly decomposed that their bodies had in part liquefied. Stockton was driving around for some time in a car that reeked of human remains.

Bruscato said their deaths remain open investigations.

It was later learned that they were Baby Crystal’s sisters, each of the three with different fathers.
