Blind cat and a mom stuck in Winchester tree; firefighters save mom; pro-climber saves cat
Winchester, MA - For several hours Friday, a cat, a mom and a professional tree-climber took turns perched at the top of a mighty neighborhood tree.
It was 6 a.m., on Charles Road in Winchester, when the pitter-patter of a light rain was drowned out by the sad, steady cry of Mittens, a tiny blind cat.
Just a young kitten, the frightened feline was clinging for life 60 feet in the air atop a swaying tree branch, her grip compromised by the fact that, in addition to her blindness, she’d somehow lost a half of a paw at some point during her short, ill-fated life.
It was at that time that Sharon Paquette, who could all too clearly hear the cries of not only the cat, but also her red-eyed children, made an important decision.
She was bringing that cat back down to earth, one way or another.
“I’m thinking, ‘I’m the mother,’” said Paquette, who along with the kids, had taken the cat in, three weeks ago, when they found it dying out on the street. “I’ve got to climb up this tree.”
So later that morning, with a light rain falling and her children huddled around a borrowed ladder leaned against the base of the massive tree, Paquette scrambled up its trunk, her slow and steady progress unimpeded until the sky opened up and began to empty its coffers.
“It was raining so hard, I was losing my footing,” said Paquette, who, after all, was not a professional climber, just a mom on a mission. “I knew I was stuck.”
So too did her 13-year-old daughter, Morgan, who at about 11:30 a.m. dialed 911 and made a call she won’t soon forget.
“I said, ‘My mom is stuck in a tree,’ and they said, ‘What? How old is your mom?’” remembered Morgan. “So I said, ‘She’s 37, now just come get her!’”
