Nathaniel Shannon had just emerged from his Hallsville-area home with a Dr Pepper on Friday morning when a noise drew his attention to his aunt and uncle's mobile home across the driveway.

"I walked out, and the fire just busted out one of the windows," he said.

"I didn't think about anything. I just came over there, and I undid the hose and hooked it up and tried to put the fire out, after I busted the window."

Shannon, 12, said his uncle, Monroe Neal, had been outside, but ran inside where his aunt, Dorothy, was awakening to the scream of a fire detector.

Both got out OK, and Hallsville Fire Department crews arrived at the cluster of homes on Old Highway 80 in time to halt the blaze before the home was destroyed or others affected. The cause remains under investigation, and the Neals were spending Sunday night at their daughter's home in Longview, Shannon said.

"I was expecting it to be another regular day," said Shannon, who will be a seventh-grader at Hallsville Junior High School in a few weeks and might ought to try out as a power back.

"I play on the line a lot. I don't run too fast. I run with power."
