A mother was arrested for neglect after she fell asleep at a popular beach area and the two children she was in charge of, one of whom was her own, disappeared.

"This is a case of someone going to the river for recreation, but neglecting her responsibility to make sure the children with her were safe," said Sheriff Jeff Dickerson.

The incident happened Tuesday at Collins Beach on the north part of Sauvie Island.

The children were later found and were fine, but they were taken into protective care.

According to police, the two children, who are both 6 years old, wandered off after the mother of one of them, 46-year-old Diana Bedrosian, fell asleep.

Investigators say Bedrosian called 911 after she searched for 20 minutes trying to find the two children. It wasn't until two hours later that volunteer firefighters found them a half-mile up the beach.
[...]

According to police, Bedrosian has an extensive criminal history dating back to 1980. She has prior convictions for theft, prostitution and controlled substance offenses. Police said they saw no signs of intoxication when they arrested her.

The case is being forwarded to the Oregon Department of Human Services for followup.http://www.kval.com/news/local/52012167.html

Hmmm...

While I would never condone such lax "supervision", I'm also not entirely sure she should be arrested for this. Can people not legally allow 6 year olds to play unsupervised in their neighborhood? If so, how is this different?

I am assuming that it has clusters of unknown people around... most beaches around here do. I don't think kids should be unsupervised playing in crowds... even if it's only because they are the nuisances LOL.

And then there's the water... I would not let my 6-year-olds play unsupervised near water... even a backyard pool. They are fearless and stupid.

"Clothing Optional" ???? Sounds like my kind of beach! But on topic bad parenting!!! Sleeping on the nude beach does not = attentive parenting.

Agreed on both points. But does that mean it should be an arrestable offense? I mean, I don't think parents should get tanked around their kids or that toddlers should live in homes with chemicals that aren't child-proofed, either, but...

I just think this was a no-harm-no-foul kind of sitation. Maybe she didn't mean to fall asleep? Either way, I think she should have gotten a stern talking to... maybe a fine, tops. But arresting her costs the city money and doesn't do the kids a bit of good.

It does do the kids good. She will think twice next time and make sure the kid(s) are better supervised - by her or other responsible person.

no-harm-no-foul is like saying nothing happened to kids living in a house full of cat poop. The point is, things could happen and it's a sign of greater problems.

Just because "nothing happened" doesn't make it OK. 6 years old is too young to be unsupervised at the beach. I wouldn't helicopter on them, but I sure wouldn't be laying down and falling asleep. I would not trust a kid that age to stay out of the water. At our lake cabin, not even adults go out in the water without another person or without telling someone.

If you get tanked and are incapable of taking care of kids you are in charge of because of it, you can get arrested around here. I assume that you could get charged with neglect if the kids drink your drain cleaner or left them alone with the bottle of drain cleaner, too.

As far arresting her, I tend to agree but think maybe it was because it wasn't her first dance and one kid wasn't hers, maybe she has probation issues or they had to do it to get CPS involved :noidea:

Her face looks like leather. She should stay off the beach.

Irresponsible adult. She was supposed to be supervising them and they are found 2 hours later down the beach unsupervised. Certainly could have read, they found two dead boys down the beach. No doubt every detail then would be scrutinized and the "only if's" would go on and and the other mother wouldn't even get a chance to beat her ass.

She's lucky, and so are those children that nothing happened other than a good sunburn maybe.
